Many of you have heard me rave about Earthwatch Expeditions over the past 30 years. Laypeople, like myself volunteer, joining forces with scientists working in the field. The tasks you work on are as diverse as the scientists themselves. My most recent expedition, was the amazing orca study in Iceland this past August. I learned a ton!
• studying hornbills behavior in Thailand
• diving for ship wreckage in Oman
• combating rising salinity tables in Australia's vineyards
• observing parrots at the clay licks in Peru
• climate change and its effect on tree growth in Borneo
• climate change effects on the life cycles of caterpillars and
parasitic wasps in Costa Rica
My next expedition will likely be a biodiversity study in Costa Rica.
I can't recommend an Earthwatch Expedition enough, these experiences get you out of your day-to-day life and remind you that you are a part of a bigger picture. They change your life and allow you access to research and animals in the wild that you would never be able to experience otherwise. Also a tax write-off, handy if you're a contractor.
