That Heirloom Is Mine || Marlin & Ray

A few days ago, Marlin had told himself that he wasn’t going to fall into old habits.
Today, with yet another lock giving way from his pick, he had to admit that he had some sort of problem.
It was extremely late, fortunately - past 3am, at least - and Marlin was dressed in possibly his least favorite thing ever - a tight-fitting black hoodie, gloves, and sweatpants. Not only did he look ridiculous, but every time that he so much as took a step, he felt every bit of the fabric clinging to him, and it was atrocious.
But it kept him almost completely concealed in the darkness, and that worked for him. The bandanna tied tightly around his nose and mouth did the rest, so he was little more than blue eyes peeking out from the darkness.
He’d seen something just the day before, around the neck of an extremely pretty person. A heart-shaped locket. Gleaming. Well taken care of. And practically resonating with some sort of power that Marlin couldn’t identify so easily. There were two thing he knew: that the person who wore it lived in this apartment, and that Marlin had to have it.
He picked his way slowly through the apartment in the pitch black, his hand and foot reaching carefully, feeling out before he committed any steps. The layout of the apartment had been easy to get - he’d merely had to make an appointment with the owner to tour a similar open one, and he knew everything about the bedrooms. He silently opened the door to one of them, taking a chance, and was rewarded by the swath of moonlight cutting through from the window and shining on the face - and the locket around their neck.
Marlin crept in, shutting the door behind him just as silently, then reached down with his gloved hands to undo the locket around the sleeping person’s neck. I knew I hadn’t lost my touch yet.
