There are at least three types of tombs in the Eastern Desert, named ring cairns, tower tombs and cist graves, said Peter Akkermans, Dutch professor of archaeology from Leiden University.
“They were built 2,000-3,000 years ago... The first type of tombs, the ring cairns, are up to 10m in diameter and 2m in height,” said Akkermans, the director of the Jebel Qurma Archaeological Landscape Project, who has been working in the Eastern Desert for eight years.

The Eastern Desert begins just southeast of the Nile delta and extends southeast into northeastern Sudan and from the Nile valley eastward to the Gulf of Suez & the Red Sea. It gets occasional rainfall and is extensively dissected by wadis - dry beds of seasonal streams. Most of the sedentary population lives in small fishing, mining, or petroleum-extracting communities along the Red Sea coastal plain east of the Red Sea Hills. Nomadic desert dwellers live by herding and trading. Relatively isolated from the rest of Egypt, the desert is rich in natural resources including Egypt’s major oil fields (both on and offshore in the Gulf of Suez) and deposits of phosphate, asbestos, manganese, uranium, and gold.
