The skull of an extinct eastern elk (Cervus canadensis canadensis) hanging in storage at the Academy of Natural Sciences of Drexel University in Philadelphia, PA.
Habitat loss and overhunting by settlers led to the extinction of this subspecies, which was larger in size than its western cousins. The eastern elk was officially declared extinct in 1880, with the last confirmed individual shot in Pennsylvania in 1877.
