Forgot to include the story! I’m going to have a glass of wine.. @napawildliferescue ・・・ Yesterday, Deb on the hotline got an unusual call~ there was a squirrel stuck in @wholefoods in Napa. It had wandered in through the front door, become scared and was hiding under the produce kiosks. Emma, the produce manager, had smartly blocked all squirrel exit points from the kiosk of bananas and potatoes so there would not be a terrified squirrel running amuck over the store. Richard and Suzy were dispatched as rescuers to try and retrieve the squirrel. Try as they might, it became clear that the produce kiosks were going to need to be moved and that the net may not even be effective. This would have to wait until the store closed. Enter Linnaea, our skilled wildlife rehabilitator, with a glove, a trap ans a net. She was not messing around! Linneae and team tried blocking off sections with plywood, they tried moving sections around, but the squirrel was running away and yelling back at them, except when he stopped to eat a snack. He kept pretending to be a potato among fallen potatoes. Emma and Linnaea tried everything, but eventually the squirrel escaped the potato flat. A team member yelled "He's by the registers!" Linnaea grabbed her gloves, net and towel so that she could corner him in customer service, and right when she thought she had him, he leapt over the desk! He was followed through body care and Linnaea finally netted him in frozen foods. It was a young, healthy eastern fox squirrel so we released him in a tree nearby. Thanks to Emma's quick thinking and call in the experts, the squirrel is now safe. He did eat a lychee though.
