Sunday th August
St. Michael’s Church
It had been eating at him for a while. Why had been brought back? Had he even been brought back, or just spat out. Rejected from heaven as his father had always said, and as he had always worried his actions would have made him. Maybe he’d done enough to escape hell though.
But if this was a punishment or purgatory, even though he now knew he was back, however impossible that felt, why was Lily here? Why were people who deserved to be somewhere supposedly bright and happy here in this shitty world? Not to mention the ones who definitely should have had nostrils full of brimstone and sulfur. They weren’t questions he could find answers to in the Library, especially when he couldn’t undo the wards and locks on some of the books in the restricted section without a wand, and he certainly couldn’t keep asking Madam Pince to summon specific tomes for him on the days she was there.
No person could answer it. But as he had tossed and turned in his admittedly more comfortable bed his mind had kept casting back to his childhood, to Sundays spent in his one set of nice clothes and shoes sitting quietly next to his parents, his father’s hand heavy on his shoulder, his deep voice belting out the hymns...
But he hadn’t liked church. Even now, after a short floo trip and a significant trek uphill, just looking at the arched doorway was making him almost as anxious as the moments before apparating before the Dark Lord and the irony of feeling like a fraud in front of both Lords was not lost on him.
He watched a woman in a smart dress and hat walk inside from the gate to the churchyard, and when he heard the low singing of a hymn inside, and seemed to be alone, he opened the gate, stealing closer across the grass and gravel path until he was standing just next to the door, in front of a Noticeboard of community events and close enough to hear the words, and remember being one of the voices singing praise and joy.
