Did you know all the things you can do with your Taiwan Easy Card?
When you arrive in Taiwan or even before that, you might wonder what is one of the first things you should do. I do not know what is on your list, but I do believe that buying a Taiwan Easy Card should be in your top 5 things. In this article, you will understand every feature of the Easy Card and realize how many things you can do with it, from taking public transportation to purchasing items at many stores. An Easy Card will simplify your life in Taiwan.
What is the Taiwan Easy Card (悠遊卡) ?
Developed by Easy Card Corporation, the Taiwan Easy Card or 悠遊卡 (Yoyoka), is a contactless smartcard that makes transportation easier in Taiwan. It allows you to conveniently take the MRT, buses, taxis, Taiwan High Speed Rail (HSR), and more without the need to pay in cash every time. You can also use the Easy Card to make payments at convenience stores and supermarkets.
There are different types of shapes and sizes for Easy Cards. The most common one is the rectangular shape. However, they can also come in other shapes, like the shape of the PS4 game handle which was very popular in Taiwan recently, or even beer bottle shaped Easy Cards but you will have to pay more to buy one of those.

Public Transport in Taiwan - Easy Card
I also went and got an Easy Card, which is a travel card for public transport here in Taiwan. It’s super easy to do. IT TAKES JUST THREE STEPS:
Step 1: Literally just go to any 7-Eleven or an MRT station, (fairly sure train stations have them too, bus stops don’t for obvious reasons. I think other supermarkets also sell Easy Cards too tbh). Step 2: Find the info booth/person at the cash register depending on where you at. Step 3: Ask for an Easy Card. Pay.
TA-DAH. You are now the proud owner of an Easy Card!
Topping up is also piss easy, just find your nearest station/7 Eleven, and find one of the top up machines. Place your card on the bit that says “PLACE CARD HERE”, click English on the menu if you can’t read Mandarin, (there are some other language options but I can only remember Jap and Korean off the top of my head). Click on the option to top up your card, then shove some money into the machine. Wait till it says you can take your card back. Et voila. You can now travel!
Oh, and here is a handy-dandy official MRT website, (in English) with lots of helpful info, such as timetables, routes, fares, metro etiquette, etc., etc. I definitely recommend reading the etiquette section! There are some rules when using the MRT that foreigners may not be used too, so make sure to check this out! x
