Listen to this fantastic Bobby Weir solo in Easy Wind, ‘71...
Someone recently asked (on reddit, I think?) whether Weir ever took solos, or if it was all Jerry all the time.
The answer, big and small, is yes.
I (and plenty of others) would argue that Weir was the rhythm guitarist that wasn’t. He played in his own way - and much has been written about that. Also, in any show, you can hear pretty much every band member playing lead in some fashion ... the nature of the beast ... that’s a longer post already written more than once.
But for a more immediate example, listen to Weir’s solo in Easy Wind from the classic 2-19-71 Port Chester show. Around 3:30, after Pigpen’s harmonica solo, Weir takes the lead.
Yes. That’s Weir playing.
Garcia steps back and let’s his pal do the song justice --- comes in for his turn later (around 4:50) ... and so, yeah, if you’re looking for great Weir solo examples. Well, here’s one.
