does your muse know how to shoot a gun ?

Joan knows how to shoot a gun, but would not be skilled in, say, a gunfight. Her knowledge of guns, using them && how they work comes mainly from hunting experience. Joan was born in Russia, and her father would occasionally take her on trips there ( typically during the winter months for Christmas — though Joan never really developed a relationship with her grandparents on her father’s side ). He taught her to hunt, in case she ever became stranded ( or purposely abandoned, I’ll likely write a drabble about this in the future ) in the forrest. She would be knowledgeable on hunting, finding shelter and overall survival. Her last trip was when she was 17, and she hasn’t been back or shot a gun since.

Yes. It’s been made reference to in the show, during one of Joan’s mental breakdowns the delusion of her father says: ❛ It’s because you need to see them hurt. Even as a child, you’d hurt things just for the sake of it. ❜  — I assume he’s making reference to animals. In an episode fittingly titled Goldfish, Joan’s fish dies. She pulls it from the bowl, brings it to her bathroom and asks it  ❛ What’s the matter with you ? ❜  before tearing it in half && flushing it. Later, in the same episode, during another breakdown, she picks up her new goldfish && smashes the bowl on the floor, effectively killing it. 

She only seems to harm / lash out towards animals in states of complete emotional distress. When she’s unhinged && needs somewhere to put her rage. More under the cut:

This started after she witnessed her father drown her mother in their bathtub. Due to her fathers teachings that expression emotion will inhibit her and make her weak, the sadness and rage she felt was taken out on other living things as she had nowhere else to put it. She wanted to see things hurt like she hurt, and in her state of completely vulnerability watching her father beat && murder her mother, she decided she would have control from here on out. She would control her feelings, her pain and the pain of others. She would never again be vulnerable — others would be vulnerable in her presence.

Only an hour into her shift and the herbivore handler had already been dismissed for the day. Her supervisor had sent her to the medical unit after taking an unfortunate fall. She was told to take the rest of the day off, leaving her to presume that she would have her schedule changed around for the next week or so depending on how bad her injury was. Stepping  — or limping  might’ve been the better term — into the room, she took a seat in the examination chair and waited patiently.

Watching the silver doorknob turn, the twiddling of her thumbs ceased and she propped herself upright. “Um, good morning!” In spite of the obvious pain that she was trying to avoid revealing, she still carried herself with an upbeat nature. “Sorry to be bothering you so... early...”

He  turns  to  see  his  interviewed  slash  drinking  partner  of  the  night  with  a  grave  look.  He  knows  his  words  are  true,  but  somehow  he  imagines  Doctor  Lecter  isn’t  exactly  talking  about  work  anymore;  this  isn’t  about  profiling  serial  killers,  or  studying  the  worst  part  of  the  human  psyche,  they  covered  all  that  before  deciding  to  break  the  rules  of  professionalism  and  getting  the  glasses  out.  But  somehow,  Bill  knows  the  psychiatrist’s  words  are  true,  he  has  been  through  things,  unspeakable  darkness  not  unlike  himself.

“ Is that why you chose to become a psychiatrist? ”  Bill  asks,  forgetting  his  manners  a  little  and  immediately  apologizing  “ Forgive me, D-Doctor. It’s just...  sometimes the only way to cope with the unimaginable is by giving it a meaning of your own ”  he  says,  uncertain  why  the  words  leave  a  bitter  taste  on  his  mouth,  as  he  drinks  from  his  cup  again.

Ferrus sets the centuries old bottle of red wine on the table—it’s three hundred and fifty years old—a blend he’s been saving for a special occasion. “Doctor. . .you flatter me.” He smiled, bashful, and ducks his head into the scarf that’s tightly wound around his neck. “My skills as a tailor are all I have worth offering you. I’m afraid I’m not a terribly interesting man outside of my work.” Then again, maybe Doctor Lecter would be interested in necromancy? He doesn’t strike Ferrus as the type. Granted, someone like Doctor Lecter might be full of surprises.

Cheeks a pleasant shade of rose, Ferrus slowly unwinds the scarf from around his neck. He’s wearing a suit that he’d made himself—black with red accents and golden, antique buttons. This is the nicest he’s ever dressed in front of the Doctor, but special occasions call for special kinds of dress. He hangs the scarf over a chair. The scars on his necks are red and angry—some would even say disfiguring—and it’s a sign of trust that Ferrus reveals his body in any respect. They are in a private setting and Ferrus knows that Doctor Lecter is known for his discretion. 

“Thank you for inviting me over, Doctor Lecter. I’ve brought a vintage red. You said we were having red meat, so I thought it might go well with it.” He motions to the bottle with a soft, sweet smile. “I hope you like it.”

          “--Thank you for giving me this opportunity, Dr. Lecter.” 

          Fine dishes spread from one end of the table to the other, each holding a masterfully arranged work of culinary art. Fruits, breads, meats, and desserts of all kinds, steaming and fragrant with herbs and spices. It was a feast suited for wealthy men with refined palates, not struggling photographers, and yet there was where Sean found himself. 

          He’d come dressed in the best clothes he owned -- a starchy white dress shirt whose collar he’d carefully folded out from under his thick, grey sweater -- but even then he felt severely out of place. The collar in particular tugged against his throat each time he crouched to line up a shot. 

          “I’ve heard many, many great things about your work,” Sean went on. He squinted out the glassy eye of his camera and held his breath. Click. Exhale. He smiled. “But the praise really didn’t do it justice. This is beautiful.”
