When I was in middle school I read Speaker for the Dead and I was blown away by Enders “supernatural understanding of human nature”. There’s a scene when he meets these six children who are all very hostile towards him for various reasons, and by the end of the interaction all of them are off kilter and start to trust and like him, and through his internal narrative you see his perceptions of their actions and motivations and emotions. That low key changed my life as a kid because I could never understand ANYONES emotions or motivations, and until this book I couldn’t imagine how people could just tell what other people want or think or feel. I remember obsessively rereading it over and over, seeing the cues he looked at and going over interactions I’d had during the day and trying to apply his methodologies. Now I’m older and I’m much better at social interaction and discerning people’s thoughts and feelings and emotions and I’m rereading the book for the first time in a few years and I’m just thinking damn. Thanks Orson you might be a homophobe who doesn’t understand microbiology but you sure helped me out when I needed it.

Everyone talks about how amazing the princess bride is (rightfully so) but people don’t talk enough about the soundtrack. The motifs the themes the impeccable vibes. Have you sat down and listened to “guide my sword”? Have you heard “the friends’ song” and heard the guitar and horn in conversation with each other in a light and playful dance, much like Inigo and Fezziks’ friendship? Mark Knopfler is a legend. I love Phillip Pullman but by far the WORST part of the post dark materials trilogy is Malcom falling in love with Lyra. Not to say I know him better than the author but my boy would NOT carnally desire the child 12 years his junior he rescued as an infant and taught as a professor.
