Hello, my name is Jacqueline Loh and I'm currently 17 years old. I'm a malaysian-chinese residing in Australia. My father has been incredibly abusive to me - to the point where I just cannot stand to live in the same house as him - or be associated with him. I want to change my last name Loh, to remove any times to him at all as that is his surname. Similarly, I don't want to be associated with my mother who has been emotionally abusive aswell. I would like to maintain my Chinese-heritage (pt1)

as it is something I strongly identify with. I also don't want to randomly choose any Chinese last name, as that is could potentially be deemed offensive. I was wondering how I would change my last name that is still culturally significant - but is also tastefully done? Thank you.

i don’t think it’s offensive but if you really want something that’s significant to you, maybe look among your family members for a name that isn’t your mom’s or dad’s, but might still be related to you

Hello! I was just thinking whether you have seen 'Fresh Off The Boat' yet and I want to hear your thoughts on it? Personally, I found a lot of moments very real and hit close to home so I'm pretty excited for the show itself.

omg! sorry i totally missed this ask. i think there are some issues w how they're writing it and therefore representing some t hings, however those points have already been discussed and i think the show has a lot to offer us!!!! i'm so excited and i'm glad this show is on the air and i also found that a lot of moments hit close to home, which is the thing i'm most excited about. this show is so important for us, especially those of us who are very young, bc we get to see ourselves on mainstream tv and see a story that represents us and our families and our lives. it's far from perfect but i'm so freaking happy it's here.

Hello there! I just want to ask about Mandarin spoken in Taiwan. Is there a significant difference between the way Mainland and Taiwanese speakers speak Mandarin? I want to relearn Mandarin and by this I'm listening to Taiwanese dramas and music to sort of help me, my mum told me that the difference is Taiwanese don't 'bite' their words? Although listening to the Taiwanese pop culture helped me improve vocab, I'm anxious they I could be accenting differently when speaking to relatives or friends

there are a few differences in how some words are pronounced, and taiwanese mandarin doesn't really do juanshe (you know, for zhi, chi, shi, ri) but afaik there aren't differences in accents for words. the primary differences are more colloquial or come down to differences in phrasing. so for example, taiwanese mandarin speakers typically say 一定 while mainland mandarin speakers typically say 肯定. i've never really had problems communicating in the mainland (i grew up speaking taiwanese mandarin) and my mom has picked up taiwanese mandarin and she has no problems either. trust me, you will be fine!

I couldn't find it on your blog so I apologize if this has already been answered, but I got into a dispute about racism in australia etc, someone then said that if i find white people ~terrible~ then why should i choose to live here, or why did i come to australia if i didn't like the major demographic. basicially, they were saying 'go back to your country if you dont like it here', also does white priv exist in non-white countries, etc china?

throw the argument back at them. tell them if the white racists you encounter that make you criticise australia hate asians in australia so much, why don't they live somewhere else? tell them to go back to their country, because if australia is not 'your' country as an asian australian, it's certainly not theirs as a white australian either.

and yes, white privilege manifests itself globally. white expats in china may experience discrimination (!= racism) once in a while, but their overall status is still one that is elevated and protected, and any non-white expat can tell you that white expats are treated better than they are.
