neteyam’s heart was heavy as he chased his yawne (beloved). her laughs filled up the forest. he would miss this, just the two of them and the forest.
he and his family would be leaving tomorrow. leaving the high camp, never to return? he did not know.
y/n didn’t let this dampen her spirits, anytime with neteyam was a blessing. she loved him with everything she had, though they were not officially even mates yet.
anyone could look at these two and see the love that they had for each other. no one could deny it.
neteyam reaches for y/n’s tail playfully. she laughs as she runs across the forest floor, teasing neteyam.
“‘teyam!” she shrieks. they both laugh as he chases her.
their laughs fill the forest- the forest that was neteyam’s beloved home.
neteyam slows as his heart begins to feel heavy. he did not want to leave. he couldn’t- not now. his relationship with y/n was blooming. he couldn’t leave her…
y/n hears neteyam’s steps slow. she slows herself and catches her breath. “neteyam?” she asks and turns.
he was staring at his feet, clenched fists by his sides.
“neteyam what is wrong?” y/n slowly walks up to him.
she noticed thin streaks coming down his face. tears.
“neteyam! baby, are you okay?” she gently cups his face and makes him look at her.
neteyam shakes his head. the reality of everything was hitting him hard at this moment. his lip wobbled as he looks up to y/n.
“i will miss this y/n. i can’t imagine my life without you. i will miss these nights we have together. what if i never see you again?”
y/n let’s out a deep breath. she grabs neteyam’s hand gently and rubs his knuckles. “eywa brought us together ‘teyam. do you think distance will stop my love for you?”
neteyam shakes his head. “no, i guess not. you’d make a way for us to be together forever,” he adds.
y/n laughs. “perhaps, but neteyam, i promise. i will wait for you. you have my heart, and i know it is safe with you. i know i’m safe with you and that’s more than i could ever ask for.”
neteyam suddenly wraps his arms around y/n. he holds her close to him. his breaths came in short, his eyes were flooding with tears. he lowers his head and rests it on y/n’s shoulder. “i cant do this without you.”
y/n grasps him back, she held him close to her, as close as she could be. she feels tears begin to form as well.
were they kidding themselves? would they truly never see each other again?
“i don’t want you to go either neteyam. it is selfish of me i know… but for the safety of your family.”
“i know i know…”
they rest their foreheads together, still grasping each other.
“nothing will keep me from you y/n.” neteyam closes his eyes. he feels the tears run down his face. his heart felt numb.
“oh ma'teyam.” y/n gently wipes the tears from his face. “you’re too handsome to cry.” she tried to lighten the mood.
“and you are too beautiful.”
y/n smiles lightly and wipes her own tears. “not as pretty as you.”
neteyam scoffs. “yeah right.”
“i’m serious!”
neteyam can’t help but smile at her persistence. it was one of the many things he loved about y/n. she would always make a way.
“when exactly do you leave?” y/n hates asking this question.
“at sunrise. everything is packed. we move at sunrise.” neteyam answers sadly.
“then we have until sunrise, let’s make it last.” y/n proposes.
neteyam wipes his face and nods. “you’re right.”
the two begin to walk, hand in hand. they walk slowly and admire the forest. y/n pointed out her favorite flower.
neteyam crouches down and picks it. he places it in y/n’s hair gently. his hands were soft as he weaves it in her braided hair.
“thank you.” y/n smiles.
“you look beautiful y/n.” neteyam says. he rubs a hand over her cheekbone. y/n leans into his touch.
she turns and kisses his palm gently. neteyam’s heart jumps.
their eyes meet. neteyam’s heart fixes a displaced hair on y/n. he reaches for her hand.
he gently kisses the top of it. y/n’s heart swells at his gentleness.
“i see you.”
“i see you y/n.”
y/n notices neteyam take a deep breath. they were leaning in closer.
the two lovers rest their foreheads together.
neteyam quickly catches y/n’s lips in his. his poured his emotions out in this kiss. his love, his joy, his pain.
y/n gasps in the kiss. she meets him with just as much fervor.
their lips dance with each others.
neither one of them didn’t want to stop. it was perfect.
neteyam dares and swipes his tongue along y/n’s lip, asking for permission.
y/n grants it. their tongues gently meet each other. y/n let’s out a soft moan. this spurs neteyam on. he holds her face and devours her.
y/n kisses him back just has hard.
the two are lost in this moment, feeling each other’s love.
neteyam pulls back, gasping. y/n’s eyes were still closed. he kisses her eyelids, tasting her tears.
“don’t cry y/n. please.”
“i am sorry neteyam.” y/n responds. “i just… that was perfect. i love you so much.”
neteyam nods. “and i you.”
y/n hugs neteyam, she kisses the side of his neck. neteyam hugs her back.
“don’t let go 'teyam. ever.”
“never y/n.”

it seemed awa’atlu was in mourning. the rain wouldn’t stop, the skies were gray.
the metkayina people were missing their tsahik.
but none missed ronal most than her children.
ao'nung sat in the ocean. his eyes felt puffy, his heartache overtook his senses. he felt the sand beneath him, the waves somewhat calmed him.
y/n was asleep in her shared hammock. she awoke, and noticed her mate was missing.
“ao'nung?” she quietly called out.
her heart knew where he was. ever since ronal’s death, ao'nung had not been sleeping well.
y/n sighs as gathers her shawl and heads out of her marui.
the sand was cold and wet under her feet. y/n looked up at the starless sky, the clouds were heavy. she feels the raindrops upon her.
y/n walked and walked until she found him.
ao'nung was looking up at the sky, his mouth was moving but y/n could not make out what he was saying.
he suddenly slams his fist down in the water. he brought his hands to his face as he sobbed.
“oh no…” y/n says quietly. she rushes over to ao'nung. she gently places a hand on his shoulder. he doesn’t respond.
“yawne? (beloved)” y/n asks. ao'nung’s ear twitches and turns towards her slightly on hearing his mate’s soothing voice.
“can you look at me? please?” y/n begs. she kneels by his side, hand still on his shoulder.
ao'nung doesn’t answer. he’s still, unlike the waters he sat in.
y/n sighs. she sits in the water with him. it was frigid.
y/n traces ao'nung’s cheek gently. she delicately traces his new tattoo. “i’m here, love. i’m here.”
“but she’s not.” ao'nung says. his voice was low and scratchy.
y/n bows her head. she gently takes ao’nung’s hand in hers. she kisses his cold palm.
“i can’t feel her anymore.” ao'nung says.
“she’s still here ao'nung.” y/n places her free hand on his heart. “you keep her alive in your memory, when you speak of her. she would be so proud of you.”
ao'nung shakes his head. “i can’t believe that.”
“have you visited her at all at the spirit tree?” y/n inquires. she kisses his fingers.
ao'nung’s lip quivers. “no, i have not. i cannot bear to see her. i want to but i-“ he cuts himself off with a shake of his head. “some son i am.”
y/n quickly cups ao’nung’s cold face. “yawne (beloved), you are her son. you love your family, you are a warrior-“
“a warrior is supposed to protect. i couldn’t protect her.” ao'nung sniffs.
“her death is not yours to bear. the sky people-“
“they killed her! almost killed my baby sister too! i hate them!”
“ao'nung,” y/n runs her hand through his rain soaked hair. “do not blame yourself for their actions, please.” tears start to well in y/n’s eyes. ao'nung looked truly broken. “let me help you.”
ao'nung finally looks at y/n. his eyes were swollen, his face wet from the rain, camouflaging his tears. “y/n?”
“i’m here my heart.”
“y/n!” he collapses into y/n’s arms. he buried his face into her neck, inhaling her comforting and familiar scent.
y/n holds into him, not daring to let him go. “i’m here. i’m here.” y/n whispers. she kisses the side of his face gently. “i’m here and i am not going anywhere.”
ao'nung let’s himself sob in her arms. “i miss her so much.”
y/n runs her fingers along his braided scalp. “i know, i do too.”
ao'nung pulls back and started deep into y/n’s eyes. he cups her face with his hand. “what do i do?”
“you live. for her. for your father, tsireya and for pril. but mostly for yourself. she is not truly gone ao'nung.”
“i’m afraid to visit her.”
y/n let’s out a breath. “ao'nung, would you allow me to visit her with you?”
ao'nung’s lip trembles. “you want to?”
y/n gives a soft smile. “i do. only if you want.”
ao'nung nods. “yes. please, can you join me? i think she would be pleased to see you as well.”
y/n laughs at this. “perhaps, but i know if she saw her son, it would bring you both great joy.”
“then let’s go then. now.” ao'nung quickly stands up out of the water. he gives y/n a hand and he gently helps her stand.
“how can i help you with this ao'nung? what do you need?” y/n asks.
“i will call my ilu, do you mind grabbing my tack?”
y/n nods, already turning towards the village. “of course. i’ll be back.”
-
the two rode ao'nung’s ilu, y/n’s grip around his waist grounded ao'nung. his nerves felt shot, he was so scared to see his mother, but with y/n…
the reach the cove of the ancestors. it looked beautiful at night.
the tree lit up the water beneath the two of them. ao'nung ends the bond with his ilu, and gets into the water. he helps y/n off, hand grasping hers tightly.
“are you with me?” he asks.
y/n nods. “til the very end ao'nung.”
ao'nung kisses y/n in the forehead. “thank you.”
“no need ao'nung.”
ao'nung cracks a soft smile. “let us go then.”
the two take a deep breath and begin the swim to the spirit tree.
remaining tulkun swam around them, bringing smiles in the two’s faces.
their hands never leave each others as they swim together closer to the tree.
ao'nung begins to tear up, he reaches behind and grabs his kuru. he reaches out and the tendrils meet the tree, wrapping around and grasping it.
“i’m right behind you ao'nung.” y/n assures.
ao'nung nods and closes his eyes.
y/n watches. ao'nung’s face softens, and then… a smile.
“mother…” he says quietly.
y/n smiles. she grabs her own kuru and joins in on the bond with ao'nung. she closes her eyes.
y/n was now with ao'nung. she watched as ronal hugged her son. a smile on both of their faces.
“oh my son, i’m so happy you’re here.” ronal says gently.
“i’m sorry i did not visit earlier sa'nok (mother), please forgive me.” ao'nung says, tearing up.
ronal rests her head on top of her son’s. “i never doubted you, i knew you would come when you were ready. do not doubt yourself ao'nung. you are so strong.”
“i’m sorry i couldn’t protect you!”
ronal kisses the top of his head. “no apologies, my son. you fought to protect our home, to protect y/n.” she motions her head to y/n, standing off to the side
ao'nung looks to y/n, “i hope it is okay i brought her with me. i couldn’t do it alone.”
“i’m glad you aren’t alone.” ronal reaches out for y/n. y/n walks forward and gently grabs ronal’s hand in hers.
“hello tsahik.” y/n bows her head.
“hello y/n.” ronal gathers y/n in a hug. “i thank you for looking out for my son. i know he is in good hands, you keep him safe.”
“ i try, tsahik. i love him dearly.” y/n responds.
ronal places a gentle hand on y/n’s face. “my son chose well.”
ao'nung looks at his feet and blushes. “thank you sa’nok (mother).”
ronal smiles down at her son.
“thank you for coming to see me, 'itan. (son)” Ronal’s voice was soothing. ao'nung immediately felt lighter. “i have missed you.”
“i miss you too. so much.”
ronal hugs her son again. “i am always with you. believe that, believe in me, in y/n, in eywa.”
ao'nung tears up. he nods and looks up at his mother, then y/n. “i will now.”

v’s note: takes place right after the battle in atwow
“keep your eyes open, yawntu! (beloved)” ao'nung’s heart was racing. y/n had taken a hit in her shoulder. ao'nung heard her scream and swore his world stopped then and there.
“ao'nung, hand me that cloth there. kiri keep pressure on her shoulder.” ronal says calmly.
y/n was fading in and out of conciseness. the metal was a lot deeper than anyone had thought. she tried to hold on but sleep sounded so much better…
ronal was calm in extracting it, with kiri by her side.
ao'nung felt nauseated, seeing his loved one without color, bleeding out, crying…
“son, come with me. the women, they need their space to work.” tonowari places a gentle hand on his son’s shoulder.
ao’nung shrugged him off. “no! i cannot leave her.”
tonowari sighs. “ao'nung.” he says firmly.
ao'nung bows his head in defeat.
“it is not good for you to see y/n like this. come with me. we will talk. she will be alright, you’ll see.”
ao'nung nods. he kisses y/n’s wrapped hand and leaves with his father, head hanging, heart heavy.
-
“thank you ao'nung,” y/n says. she feels ao'nung’s fingers twist her hair. he hums in response.
“you have so much hair, did you know that?” ao'nung asks.
“yes, you have mentioned this before.”
“it’s beautiful.” ao'nung leaned down and kissed y/n’s bare shoulder.
“thank you.” y/n says again. she felt utterly useless. her shoulder was incapable of movement right now. ronal wrapped her arm up, y/n was only able to use one arm for right now as she healed. it was a pain.
she was thankful for her love, for ao'nung. he was there by her side. no complaints ever came from him, just support and unconditional love.
“do you want all of your hair braided love?” ao'nung asks, interrupting y/n’s thoughts.
“no, just my scalp please, can you pull it into a bun?” y/n asks gently. her big eyes pleading, ao'nung could see the sadness in them.
he nods. “okay.”
y/n closed her eyes, now feeling relaxed. ao'nung was gentle with her hair as he pulls it in a familiar bun.
“not my best work.” he comments.
y/n shakes her head. “no, it’s perfect.”
“well thank you,” ao'nung kisses the top of her head.
-
ao'nung now sits in front of y/n.
he’s respectful as he helps her dress. y/n cries out in pain as she tries to tie her seaweed and flower top. she huffs in defeat.
“allow me,” ao'nung whispers. he comes behind her, he loves her hair to the side gently. he gently ties her top with a tight knot.
“thank you ao'nung, i would be so lost without you.” y/n adjusts her injured shoulder and moans.
“no, you are capable. you will heal up in time.”
“does your mother have an idea of when i can stop wearing these herbs? they’re starting to itch.” she reaches underneath her bandage and itches.
“don’t do that.” ao'nung grabs her hand and holds it in his. “i will ask her when i see her tonight. i cannot imagine that you are far from fully healing. you are strong y/n.”
y/n sniffs, and shakes her head. “i thought i was gonna die.”
ao'nung lowers his eyes. “i cannot lie, i thought you were too.” his eyes meet y/n. they share a sad look before y/n quickly leans in for a kiss.
ao'nung meets her lips just as urgently. they both poured their emotions into the kiss. ao'nung almost lost y/n… he couldn’t even imagine his life without her now.
she was his life.
“i promise you y/n, on my life,” ao'nung starts. y/n looks up at him. “you will never be in danger like that again.”
y/n shakes her head. “you cannot promise that ao'nung. only eywa knows what will happen to us, we just have to be prepared.”
“and i will be. we will be. i will help you heal, you will be strong, it won’t be easy, but i’ll be there, if you’ll have me.”
y/n kisses ao'nung’s nose. he closes his eyes and presses his forehead against hers.
“i want you ao'nung. in everything, everytime, every life time…”
-
“let us check on that shoulder, child.” ronal says gently.
ronal removes the bandage, it was all healed, with some raised and irritated skin. ronal hums in approval. “there, you have done it.”
“when can i hunt again, ronal?” y/n asks quickly. “or swim? when can i get back in the water?”
“y/n i know you love hunting with my son, but you must take this slow. we almost lost you child.” ronal places a hand on y/n’s face, gently.
“take it slow.” ronal repeats.
-
“cool scar.” ao'nung comments. he observes at where y/n was shot. there was a small entry wound scar.
“you think so? i still have trouble using this arm.” y/n tries to raise it above her head but she cries out.
“hey, careful!” ao'nung gently brings her arm down and kisses her knuckles. “do not push yourself y/n. that’s why i’m here.”
“i just want to hunt.”
“then allow me to.”
y/n sighs. “i am not useless ao'nung!” tears well up in her eyes. she turns away from him and begins to sob, the emotions all hitting her at once.
“oh y/n that’s not… no…” he crouches down behind her. “you aren’t useless, do not say that.”
y/n sobs and sniffs. “i feel it though. i feel thrown to the side. i just want to get better!”
“you will, my heart.”
“but when? i miss my spirit sister, i miss hunting, i miss you. we haven’t gone on a swim together for weeks now.”
ao'nung nods. “you’re right, but that’s because you were healing y/n, there’s quite literally no harm in that.”
y/n wipes her eyes. she looks to her lover. there was no lie in his eyes.
y/n takes in his words and nods.
“i’m sorry ao'nung. i lost it on you there…”
“there is no need to apologize, yawntu (beloved). you’ve been through a lot. you have not hurt me.”
ao'nung hugs y/n from behind. they sit in silence.
“hey, how about…” ao'nung kisses the top of y/n’s head. “we work on holding your spear again soon hm?”
y/n’s ears perk up. “really?”
ao'nung gives her an honest smile. “really. we have to build your strength back up yes? then we can swim!”
y/n nods at this. a smile erupts on her face.
“and you’ll be there ao'nung?”
“all the way, to the end.”

y/n awakes with a strong craving for fresh seaweed. she hums and feels her babe kick. guess they were hungry too. it was the middle of the night.
“alright little one alright.” y/n whispers. she kisses her muntxatan (husband) ao'nung on the side of the head, being careful not to wake him.
she slips out of his arms. y/n does her best to get out of the hammock, hand on her protruding belly. she waddles over to where her spear was hanging. she grabs it along with her knife.
“just in case,” she whispers to her baby. she looks back at ao'nung and smiles, eywa knows how much the new olo’eyktan needed rest.
“i’ll be back,” y/n whispers. she leaves their shared marui.
y/n starts to walk the netted walkways. she bounces lightly, hand on her tummy. she smiles and the baby kicks again.
“it’s alright, i am getting something for us.” y/n confirms. “have no fear little one.”
y/n entered the cold bioluminescent water. she takes a breath and submerges underwater and begins her search.
-
ao'nung hums in his sleep. he adjusts himself and sleepily goes to hug his heavily pregnant wife.
only to find nothing there.
ao'nung starts to blink the sleep away. he’s confused as to why y/n wasnt there. maybe she was just lying on her side.
ao'nung reaches out more for y/n and again, nothing.
he shoots up in his hammock. the sleep was gone, he was on full alert now. his wife was missing.
his heart started beating as he looks around his home. you were nowhere. he notices your missing spear and knife. where were you? what in eywa’s name could you be doing?!
ao'nung rushes out of the marui. he tries to find your tracks in the sand. found you. he follows your waddling gait in the sand to the water.
“y/n… what?” he was confused. you shouldn’t be swimming, you knew this.
ao'nung begins to tie his hair back to swim before he hears another body in the water.
he looks to his side and sees his pregnant wife, with a handful of fresh seaweed and a few hammerbrow fish on her spear. y/n moves her hair out of her face and sees her husband, she freezes.
“what are you doing?!” ao'nung asks. he briskly walks over to her and takes the seaweed from her.
y/n sighs. “sorry, baby was hungry.”
ao'nung can’t help but smile at the mention of his child.
“oh so you are going to blame them? if i hadn’t have known you better, i would’ve woken up the entire clan to help search for you.” ao'nung chucked. he gently takes y/n’s spear from her.
“here we go. no need for that.” ao'nung says. “what could’ve possibly called you awake?”
“fresh seaweed.” y/n replies. “we wanted some.”
“well next time, you wake me up and i’ll get you some yes?”
“but you needed sleep! ao'nung you need your rest!”
“and you don’t y/n? you are carrying our child, i won’t let any harm come to you two.” ao'nung says quickly. he was not angry with y/n, in fact he doesn’t think he could ever be unhappy with her.
“i understand ao'nung. i’m sorry for frightening you.” y/n apologizes, placing a hand on her belly. the baby kick. “they’re sorry too.”
ao'nung shakes his head. “let’s go home you two.”
-
the smell of fresh food cooking filled the marui. y/n sat across from ao'nung as he cooked her food. they both share smiles when they catch each other staring at each other.
“here we are. some fresh seaweed and fish for my muntxate (wife). should be to your liking. cooked to baby’s liking as well.”
y/n grabs a piece of fish with her fingers and eats it. she nibbles on some seaweed and moans. “oh thank you ao'nung. i needed this.”
“clearly. you went out hunting in the middle of the night woman!”
y/n laughs wiping her mouth. “don’t blame me!”
“of course how could i forget? our little troublemaker.”
ao'nung places his hand on y/n’s stomach. he feel their child kick. “hey you,” he says.
y/n smiles at this.
“we need to come up with names, we can’t just keep calling them ‘baby’.” y/n says.
ao'nung treats himself to some seaweed as well. “why? i call you baby, we know who we are talking about.” ao'nung remarks.
“ao'nung! please!” y/n laughs, her hormones making it out loud. ao'nung joins in her laughter.
“it hurts to laugh!”
“my apologies, y/n.” ao'nung runs her belly. y/n places a hand on top his.
“you two have my heart.” ao'nung rests his forehead against y/n’s.
“and you have ours,” y/n adds. “we love you ao'nung.”
the baby kicks adding their own “i love you” as well.
y/n and ao'nung smile. “see? they love you too.”
ao'nung leans down and places a kiss on y/n’s stomach. “and i love you as well little one.”

y/n landed her ikran on the cliff side. her heart is pounding and she practically falls off her ikran.
she was gone. they had taken y/n’s daughter.
tears ran down her face as she raced through the clan. she had to find ikeyni.
many tayrangi motioned to her, greeting her by ‘tsahik, we see you’. y/n had no time to greet them back. her baby was missing.
pushing through bodies she finally finds her mate, ikeyni, standing strong and tall, giving orders to hunters.
y/n wrung her hands through her tewng. “ikeyni?”
ikeyni stops and turns. the smile on her face quickly fades on seeing y/n’s tears.
“what is it? what happened my heart?” ikeyni interrogates. the hunters watch as their olo’eyktan and tsahik converse.
“y/n, tell me everything.”
the tayrangi can barely hear over y/n’s cries. the sky people had taken her child. y/n had killed two of them but it wasn’t enough.
the na'vi clutched their weapons close to them, almost getting ready to fight.
ikeyni let’s y/n collapse into her chest. ikeyni holds her up by her shoulders.
“we will find her. i will find her. they will not have her.” ikeyni whispers, promising y/n.
“please… ikeyni.. i cannot lose her. i will die…” y/n sobs and wipes her eyes.
“breathe, breathe y/n.” ikeyni places her forehead againt y/n’s. “i promise you this y/n i will find her and bring her back.
“let me come with you. you’ll need me.” y/n sniffs and wipes her tears. “she needs me.”
ikeyni nods. “of course.”
-
the two na'vi women get close to the small rda base. it was a lone base on the seaside cliffs. ikeyni had seen them before but so far they hadn’t made any contact, though ikeyni knew to keep an eye on them.
y/n raises her bow. her breath was heavy and shaky. she did her best to not let her emotions cloud her.
“i’m here beside you, y/n. we will find her, yes?”
y/n looks to ikeyni and nods.
“she had better be here.” ikeyni whispers.
the two women walk closer and closer. they hear raised voices behind the door. they look at each other confused looks on their faces.
“find her!”
“find the kid!”
y/n gasps. was d/n not here? did they move her? where was she?
y/n begins to shake. a strong arm grabs her shoulder and turns her.
“look at me, she could be anywhere. we will find her.” ikeyni says confidently.
“but they said-“
“sshhh, just stay close to me.” ikeyni raises her bow and walks towards the door.
y/n follows but a shuffle in the bush beside her catches her ear.
y/n turns toward the sound.
ikeyni kicks the door open. screams erupt. she lets out arrow after arrow. the sky people roar orders, shoot at ikeyni but ikeyni stood strong.
“d/n?” y/n calls out. there was something familiar here. she lowers her bow. “are you out here my child?”
y/n hears ikeyni cry out, asking where the child was.
“sa’nok? (mother?)”
y/n gasps. it was d/n. “where are you hiding little one?”
“under you!”
y/n drops her bow and goes to her knees and looks in the floral bush beside her.
“d/n!” the child was crouched down, trying to be as small as she could.
“sa'nok!” d/n cries out. she reaches for her mother. y/n quickly grabs her and hoists her up in her arms.
“oh my child!” y/n runs away from the base enough to have some coverage under the foliage, holding her child.
“oh my child. i’m here, we’re here! i’m so sorry!” y/n holds her daughter close to her. tears well up in her eyes.
“thank you great mother!” y/n sobs.
“don’t cry, i was small. they couldn’t find me!” d/n wipes a chubby hand on y/n’s face, wiping a tear off.
“you were so small. i’m so proud of you.” y/n kisses her small hand. “i couldn’t find you at all.”
“sky people are stupid!”
y/n let’s out a laugh, tears streaming down her face. “d/n. stay here, i’m going to get mama alright?”
d/n name nods. “okay. i’ll stay small.”
“yes stay small, and don’t go anywhere. i’ll be right back.”
y/n runs to the base to find it in… flames.
her heart stopped. “ikeyni!” she screamed. “no! ikeyni!”
y/n collapses and screams. she was gone, her mate was gone.
y/n held herself up from the ground, she felt like she was going to pass out. she sobbed. ikeyni died… she was alone… this was her fault…
so many thoughts ran through y/n’s head. self doubt, blame, shame… how was she going to go back to the clan.
y/n sobbed so hard she didn’t realize the arms wrapping around her.
“no! no! don’t touch me!” y/n cries out fighting off the arms.
“sshhh it’s me, calm!”
y/n knew that voice.
she looked up and saw ikeyni… she was here!
y/n gasps and collapses into ikeyni. “oh eywa! i thought i lost you. i could not have-“
“sshhh let’s get d/n home. this place is about to go up in flames. we need to get to safety!”
-
d/n was asleep in y/n’s arms. ikeyni lay with them. ikeyni moves a small braid out of d/n’s face. y/n smiles.
“what a day.” ikeyni comments, letting out a breath.
“mmhmm. little one wandering off, thinking you were dead.” y/n says.
“at least we found her.” ikeyni takes a hand and wraps it in hers. she kisses y/n’s knuckles. “i’m so glad she’s safe. both of you are.”
“as am i.” replies y/n. “you two are the most important things in my life. i cant lose either of you!”
ikeyni kisses y/n gently on the lips. “i promise you here and now, i will protect you with my life. you and d/n. no more harm will come to you both.”

“how long is it gonna take for her to get it? we’ve been here for weeks now.” jake’s voice was raised as he paces back and forth. y/n flinches when she hears it. she and her sister leaned up against the marui’s carefully.
“jake, you of know her fears. be gentle with her.” her mother tried to reason with him.
“neytiri she’s our eldest. she should be the first one in the water but she’s holding herself back.”
the words dug like a blade in y/n’s heart. deep down she knew her father had a point. but she couldn’t shake this, this binding fear. y/n had avoided water at all costs, ever since she was a child.
she feels a stream down her face as she leaves the side of the marui. she starts walking briskly away.
her younger sister kiri looked at her, her strong empathy wanting to comfort her.
“y/n… it’s okay not to-“
y/n holds a hand up and stops walking. she takes deep breaths as she tries to calm herself. “it’s fine kiri. just go back home. i need to go for a walk.” kiri grabs her hand and then walks off.
y/n walks around the beach. she watches as the other na'vi swim soundly and safely in the water. y/n envied them.
she walks along the beach admiring the view. it was beautiful, the sun was shining, warming her, the skimwings jumped and played with the tulkun in the water far off.
“y/n!” someone called her name.
it was ao'nung, though he was in his ilu deep in the water. y/n waves to him but didn’t dare enter.
ao'nung knew of this fear y/n had. at first he scoffed at it. how could the daughter of toruk makto learn the way of water if she was afraid of the water?!
as the two got to know each other, ao'nung’s heart softened. he learned y/n that had this phobia of water.
once ao'nung had cradled her as he walked her home, the whole time y/n was in tears. the water felt too high against her legs. y/n had got frightened, she could barely speak.
once ao'nung saw the pure fear y/n’s eyes, he understood.
he needed to be gentle. this was going to be a slow process. but, he was patient.
ao'nung dismounts and swims over to y/n. he waves to her again. he walk up and takes her hand in his and kisses it.
“why are you crying, my heart?” ao'nung asks, worry in his voice.
“nothing just… it’s my dad. he said some things about me and it really hurt me. i didn’t think it would.”
ao'nung lowers his head and kisses y/n’s forehead. “they expect so much from you all the time.”
“i don’t know why i am so afraid ao'nung! i don’t want to be, i want to swim with my brothers and sisters, i want to hunt, i want my own ilu-“
“and you’ll get all those things y/n you will!” ao'nung says encouragingly. “you know i want to help.”
y/n nods her head. “and i thank you for that, truly i do. you must think it’s so silly.”
ao'nung shakes his head. “i believe every na'vi here has been afraid of water once in their life.”
“maybe when they were a child, not having passed their iknimaya already.”
ao'nung looks you in the eye and shakes his head. “i’ve seen grown men swim back only because of one large wave caused by their own tulkun.”
y/n smiles at the visual.
ao’nung takes y/n’s hands gently and begins walking backwards.
“ao'nung what are you-wait!” y/n stops and braces herself, her heart was now pounding.
“sshhh y/n, do you trust me?” ao'nung asks.
“what?” y/n barely hears him.
“i said, do you trust me.” ao’nung releases her wrists and intertwines his fingers with hers. “walk with me, yeah?”
y/n cant ignore her heart pounding. “i can’t ao'nung…” she whispers.
“yes, you can. i promise you, i’ll be here the whole way.”
y/n takes a breath and takes a step. she hold onto ao'nung’s forearms, squeezing tightly.
“perfect.” ao'nung praises. “keep doing that.”
“can you keep holding me?” she asks.
“i am not going anywhere. you’re doing amazing.”
“we aren’t going out all the way are we?” y/n asks, hee eyes wide. she looks at the tulkun and how far they were.
“only as far as you want.” ao'nung replies.
the water was up to their hips now. y/n has calmed. ao'nung has not let her go once. he whisper praises to her, and proud he is.
he sees the fear leave her eyes, her grip loosens, she’s walking more fluidly.
he knew she could.
“okay, okay, i think this all i can do today.” the water now was just above their navels.
ao'nung nods but asks; “are you sure? we can go further out!”
y/n shakes her head. “no this is it. i am sorry.”
ao'nung shakes his head and turns, he throws an arm around y/n. he kisses her forehead. “you did it. look how far out we got!”
y/n takes one look behind her and nods. “it’s pretty good. could be better.”
“oh y/n,” ao'nung brushes some wet hair out of y/n’s eyes. “let yourself have this. that’s the farthest you’ve gone yes?”
y/n nods.
“then that’s something to celebrate! y/n soon you’ll get your ilu!”
“don’t play with me,” y/n digs a finger into ao'nung’s abs, leaning into kiss him.
he throws his hands up. “i would never lie to you.”
“i know…” y/n kiss ao'nung.
ao'nung smiles in the kiss. he wraps his arms around her and holds her close. their tongues tease and dance around.
y/n pulls back. “thank you ao'nung. can we do this again?” she asks placing a hand on the dude if his face.
he turns kisses her palm. “whenever you want, i’m all yours.”

y/n stands outside the sully’s marui. her heart was pounding, her tail was flciking, there were tears streaming down her face.
she was terrified for kiri.
kiri had a seizure underwater.
y/n and her friends were all having a wonderful time together, showing the sully kids the cove of the ancestors
y/n watched with a smile on her face and kiri took in the cove, her eyes widen with amazement. ao'nung nudged y/n’s shoulder teasingly. she shakes him off.
they all swam to the spirit tree. y/n watched kiri connect to the tree. y/n was about to connect when all of sudden kiri began to shake. she grew stuff. she looked like she stopped breathing.
y/n jumped into action, disconnecting her to the tree and helping kiri’s brother, neteyam, bring her to the surface.
he gave her mouth to mouth, kiri was alive, but she wasn’t waking up.
everything then was a blur for y/n. sky people landed. they had strange metal tools that made annoying sounds. kiri wasnt responding to anything.
y/n repeated what you told to jakesully to his friend norm, tears running down her face.
jake sighs and puts a hand in y/n’s shoulder. “don’t blame yourself. you helped save her. you got her back to us.”
y/n nods and wipes the tears off her face. her shoulder still shook. it began to grow cold.
she knew no one was at fault, but seeing kiri like that… it terrified her. the words that normally and jake said kept running through her head.
she don’t understand most of them meant, but she knew it wasn’t good news, kiri wasn’t doing well.
it wasn’t until ronal entered, her healing supplies in hand. neytiri convinced her to stay and ronal began her work.
y/n stayed outside the pod all day. it was evening now.
she was about to give up hope when she heard kiri cry out. she cries out for her mother. neytiri and tuk comfort her. y/n began to thank eywa.
kiri let the shock run through her. she let herself cry, feeling every emotion.
once kiri calmed down, neytiri told kiri everything. she couldn’t connect to eywa anymore…
that’s when y/n entered. kiri saw her and reached out for her. neytiri smiles as she realzise y/n was still there. she pulls tuk away to give the two space.
y/n gasps and gives kiri her hand. kiri pulls y/n into a hug.
“are you okay? are you okay?” y/n ran her fingers through kiri’s hair, looking over her.
kiri grabs y/n’s hands and stops her. “i will be.”
“kiri-i am so sorry.”
“you don’t need to apologize y/n. you did nothing wrong.” kiri inspects her kuru. “there’s something wrong with me.”
you place a hand on her thigh and shake your head. “no, there is nothing wrong with you kiri. maybe since you’re from the forest you couldn’t connect properly to our-“
“no-it’s not that. it is me.” kiri looks down at her intertwined hands. “i’ll never be able to see my mom again…” she covers her mouth and sobs.
“kiri…” y/n holds onto her tightly and kiri wraps her arms around y/n.
y/n let’s kiri cry. she gently rocked her.
jake entered the marui. he had finally seen his friend off.
y/n looked up to jake, her big eyes begging for help.
jake nods and rubs kiri on her back. “baby girl… i’m here.”
kiri turns away from y/n and practically collapses in her father’s arms.
y/n gets up to leave. jake nods his thanks again, y/n turns and leaves. she walks home with an unspeakably heavy heart.
the next day was calm. kiri was still recovering, she was still asleep, when y/n showed up.
y/n asks neytiri how she was doing. neytiri looks at her kindly and places a hand on her shoulder.
“she is strong y/n. she will be alright. i am grateful she has you in her life.” she nods and walks into her home.
y/n bites her lip and looks quickly into the sully’s pod. she hears kiri-she was awake!
you both catch each others eyes. you wave at her. she waves back. she turns and talks to her sa’sem (parents).
kiri slowly gets up and walks towards y/n. she walks as fast as she can and immediately gathers y/n into a hug.
y/n holds her back just as hard.
“i am sorry for being here, i was just so worried!”
kiri pull y/n back and wipes y/n’s tears. “no don’t cry y/n. it’s okay, i’m going to be okay! i promise you.”
y/n nods, taking in kiri’s words. kiri kisses y/n in the cheek and places her head on the top of y/n’s head.
“i just thank eywa you were there to save me.”

“come on, where are you?” y/n says. her heart was starting to hang heavy. she was worried, peytu, her spirit sister, had not arrived at the calf communion.
peytu was very independent, maybe she was just behind the other tulkun. maybe she would arrive soon.
she rode with ao'nung on his ilu. the three searched the water.
then y/n saw it. a floating tulkun, bleeding out…
“oh eywa no.” y/n immediately dives in the water and swims toward the corpse. it… it was peytu.
“eywa no, please!” she swims up to her sister. she recognized her matching tattoo she shared with her. she had designed it herself.
“peytu… peytu please!” y/n leans her head against the tulkun. she runs her hand back and forth, petting her. “wake up. come on!”
ao'nung hears y/n’s cries as he swims up behind her. his heart broke at what he sees. peytu’s blood surrounded the both of them, heavy in the water. he’s stunned at what he sees.
y/n sobs as the realization finally hits. “she died alone! she was almost there, she was so close!”
a scream leaves y/n’s throat. ao'nung’s heart breaks. he quickly wraps his arms around y/n and hugs her. y/n grasps onto him.
“she died alone ao'nung.. i wasn’t there to protect her!” y/n cries out.
ao'nung tightens his grip around her. he shakes his head. “this is not your fault. this was the sky people.”
“i should’ve gone out to search for her! i could’ve prevented this! i-“ y/n begins to hyperventilate.
“stop. y/n you need to breathe,” ao'nung places a hand on y/n’s abdomen. “breathe.”
y/n shakes her head. she drops her head onto ao'nung’s chest. he holds her tight and hums. it was a familiar tune, it was one his mother sang to his sister when she was a baby and upset.
“i’ll kill them all! i swear ao'nung i will!” y/n says between sobs.
“let it out y/n. i’m here.”
y/n sobs as she holds onto ao'nung tightly. he was the only thing grounding her right now. rage and sadness consumed everything she had.
“breathe.”
“i’m trying ao'nung, i want her back!”
“her heart is with eywa-“
“i don’t want her with eywa! i want her here! she should be here with me!”
“i’m sorry, y/n. don’t let your heart become hard like the sky people. i’m here. peytu loves you. she always will.” ao'nung pets y/n’s wet hair.
“and i love her. i should’ve been here, i should’ve known.”
“you can’t blame yourself. this is not your fault, peytu knows this.” ao'nung kisses her on the forehead. “you have to be strong now.”
“how do i continue ao'nung? how? with such evil that takes and takes…”
“you are better than them y/n.” ao'nung adds.
“i feel like… i don’t know. i cannot feel anything right now.”
ao'nung’s eyes begin to fill with tears. “then feel me. feel my heartbeat. i’m not going anywhere. i will stay with you as long as you need.”
y/n let’s her head fall onto ao'nung’s chest. she took deep breaths trying to calm herself. she wipes her eyes and nods.
“i guess it’s time to say goodbye.” y/n turns to peytu. she kisses her gently and rests her forehead on her.
“i love you sister. i’ll see you soon. we won’t be apart for long.”
