Of course, ナンパ is typically used of a man picking up a woman (a woman picking up a man is 逆ナン, lit. “reverse nanpa”) bc y’know heteronormativity; I don’t know if another word is used for gay pick-ups or if the queers just co-opted it. And, sure, Hayate did at first wonder if Mima had mistaken him for a woman, but Mima had not. He knew full well he was a man. So if that ain’t what happened, then why describe it that way??
