Oops it's been a little bit since I've posted here 🫣 but here's a personal project I just wrapped up and am really excited about!
So I found this "chonk cats" nesting doll set a couple years ago and I've been holding on to it with the idea to repaint them to look like my partner and I's cats. I finally took some time for myself and made that idea come to life this week! Adding more images below to show the process and each kitty (and the box redesign) in more detail :3
Here's how it started! I first sanded each one to make sure the paint would adhere to the plastic! (I only have a picture of one sanded one tho)
Then I painted each one to look like each of our cats! I didn't get any progress pictures of these, but here's the finished pics of each and the respective cat :)
First up was Willow (our big lady)
Then Toaster Strudel (or Toast, for short). Ear scritches were the only way I could convince him to stand still(-ish) in front of the camera lol
And finally, our tiny little Egg boy (Ecgberht)
AND since the littlest nesting doll (Egg) also opens up, I put some teeny cat sculptures that I made and painted inside of him!
After finishing those all up I realized that I could remake the box the original nesting dolls came in to match the repainted pieces! After some brainstorming for exactly how I wanted to approach it, I figured I could disassemble the original box and scan it to make a template. So, I did exactly that! I double checked measurements and worked in procreate to trace over it to create the template and to redesign each panel. Here's my redraw of the front panel, the original scan, and my whole box redesign! (blurred out some personal info)
Once I was happy with it I printed it out, laminated it, cut it out, creased the folds, and taped it together!
And TA-DA!! 🎉 Finished nesting doll customs of my partner and I's precious babies! I had a blast with this little personal project and I'm feeling super super happy with how these turned out.
Hope you enjoyed looking at them! 🤠
