Stray thoughts in my head today: How do I turn my own life into a story I want to tell?
My art therapy group met today (this is the one I help facilitate and we’re doing meetings online rn), and the topic of the day had to do with taking creative action/risk and why it’s so hard sometimes to do the creative things we all profess to love and want to do.
There are lots of reasons for creative blocks, of course. (And sometimes those reasons are very personal/individual.) But it had me wondering if it would be easier for me, personally, to put my creative desires first if my culture simply valued creativity more. Society too often sees creativity as expendable, elective, frivolous. (And what isn’t frivolous had better make money for the machine!)
I wonder what would happen to the world if we treated creativity like it was as necessary as food and water?
How would my life change for the better if I challenged myself every day (or even most days) to put my own creative desires first? What if I spent the first hour of my day imagining something new or working on something creative that mattered to me (whether or not it made any money)? I’m not sure, but the more I think about it, the more I long for that kind of change.
[melanie scrofano, 40, she/her, cis woman] Did you see [CHLOE MANCINI] at orientation in the mess hall? I heard they’re going to be [THE ARCHERY INSTRUCTOR] while they’re here! With camp opening back up they feel pretty [SKEPTICAL], and it’s their [SIXTH] year working for the camp. They’re known for being pretty [VIOLENT] and [MANIPULATIVE], but I think once you get to know them you’ll find they’re [INTELLIGENT] and [KIND]. Some say they remind them of [A BLACK LEATHER JACKET] and [BATTLE SCARS]. With everything happening around here, let’s hope they can keep their friends close and their secrets closer.
[christina nadin, 24, she/they, cis female] Here in Magnolia Blossom, you can always see [VADA RODRIGO] hanging around [HER PLANT NURSERY]. Once the camp reopened, they felt [HOPEFUL], but it wasn’t like they could stop it. They can be pretty [NAIVE] and [TRACTABLE], but stick around and you’ll find they’re [MAGNANIMOUS] and [ALLOCENTRIC]. They’ve come to be associated with [THE SMELL OF FRESH CUT FLOWERS] and [SOFT SMILES BEHIND WIDE BRIMMED GLASSES]. With that cursed camp reopening, let’s hope they can stay safe and hope their secrets aren’t the next to be revealed.
[Sarah Jeffery, 22, she/her, nonbinary] Did you see [JAMESON “JAMIE” ALVARADO] at orientation in the mess hall? I heard they’re going to be [CAMP COUNSELOR] while they’re here! With camp opening back up they feel pretty [EXCITED TO BE BACK WITH OLD FRIENDS], and it’s their [2ND] year working for the camp. They’re known for being pretty [IMPATIENT] and [SUPERSTITIOUS], but I think once you get to know them you’ll find they’re [BALANCED] and [HUMOROUS]. Some say they remind them of [ORNATE DECKS OF CARDS] and [THE SOFT PINK CLOUDS OF A SUNSET]. With everything happening around here, let’s hope they can keep their friends close and their secrets closer.
[timothee chalamet, 24, he/him, cismale] Did you see [JACKSON HART] at orientation in the mess hall? I heard they're going to be a [CAMP COUNSELOR] while they're here! With camp opening back up they feel pretty [AMPED], and it's their [1ST] year working for the camp. They're known for being pretty [MOODY] and [OPINIONATED], but I think once you get to know them you'll find they're [SUPPORTIVE] and [GOLDEN-HEARTED]. Some say they remind them of [THE SCENT OF WEED SMOKE BURIED UNDER COLOGNE] and [PLAID, RIPPED DENIM AND PAINT STAINS]. With everything happening around here, let's hope they can keep their friends close and their secrets closer.
[Kane Brown, 28, he/him]
Here in Magnolia Blossom, you can always see [BYRON MOESCH] hanging around [HIS TATTOO SHOP]. Once the camp reopened, they felt [ANGRY], but it wasn’t like they could stop it. They can be pretty [REBELLIOUS] and [RECKLESS], but stick around and you’ll find they’re [HUMBLE] and [LOVING]. They’ve come to be associated with [CRUDE HUMOR] and [BIKERS]. With that cursed camp reopening, let’s hope they can stay safe and hope their secrets aren’t the next to be revealed.
[charles melton, 31, he/him, cis male] Did you see [EZRA KING] at orientation in the mess hall? I heard they're going to be [GENERAL COUNSELOR] while they're here! With camp opening back up they feel pretty [JUST HERE TO MAKE THINGS RIGHT], and it's their [FIRST] year working for the camp. They're known for being pretty [JUDGMENTAL] and [EGOTISTICAL], but I think once you get to know them you'll find they're [CONFIDENT] and [LOYAL]. Some say they remind them of [MEMORIES OF THE GOOD OLD DAYS] and [CALLOUSED HANDS FROM WORKING HARD]. With everything happening around here, let's hope they can keep their friends close and their secrets closer.
