September 2021. Stylish Claudia Caranfa cover for the third Hard Case Crime volume compiling the MS. TREE comic series by Max Allan Collins and Terry Beatty. Drawing on Collins' love of Mickey Spillane's Mike Hammer, Ms. Michael Tree (née Friday) is a private investigator and the widow of another private eye who was murdered on their wedding day. Like Hammer, Ms. Tree is tough as nails, and a singularly ruthless heroine.
THE COLD DISH actually presents the character's earliest appearances, beginning with her debut in ECLIPSE MAGAZINE in 1981, followed by the early issues of the MS. TREE ongoing series from 1983–1989. The first two volumes of this series made the curious choice to lead with the character's last comic book appearances to date, the MS. TREE QUARTERLY series originally published by DC in the early 1990s. Collins explains the rationale for this in his introduction to the first volume, but it's still a little jarring in terms of the series' internal chronology. It appears the plan from here on out is to reprint the rest of the '80s series in chronological order; a fourth volume appeared in 2022 and a fifth came out in October 2023.
