Okay, so I’m no linguist, but we talk about Star Wars having most characters speak one language-Galactic Basic.
But we don’t talk about dialects of Basic. Occasionally we get “Coruscanti lilt” and so on. And I’m calling bullshit. Not sure if anyone has really gotten into how many dialects a single language like Basic would have on a single planet like Corsucant, much less in the rest of the Galaxy, but given the amount of dialects of English there are on this planet, let alone the number of Hindi dialects, I would think there would be many.
So, show us the Jedi dialect, the one taught in the Corsucanti Temple, with some variation for the children who were older/are of species that have significantly different jaw constructions than humans do. Show us the posh/upper crust dialect that’s spoken in the Senate halls, the dialect that’s spoken in the Lower Levels, and everything in between, the dialect that’s spoken on the surface.
Show us the dialect from the westernmost part of the Southern hemisphere. Show us the dialect spoken at the North Pole. Show us the dialect spoken where the Equator and Prime Meridian (whatever words they would use for it) meet.
Show us the differences in intonation for certain words not just based on geography, but also on species. Show us how a Phindian pronounces a word differently from a Mon Calamari, differently from a Falleen, differently from a Twi’lek.
Show us how those dialects change between planets. How a Twi’lek from Coruscant would speak differently from one from Ryloth, from one from Tatooine, from one from Wasskah, from one who had been enslaved on a spaceship and had never touched ground for more than a month or two.
Show us words that had been indoctrinated into the language because a person who spoke Basic was speaking to a person who was unable to, for illiteracy or biological incompatibility (ie Wookies).
It’s simple to say that one language was widely spoken, but in a place as large as the galaxy, there would be many dialects, by necessity. Show us them.
