Would you think a first-timer with any breed (esp high drive ones) would benefit from fostering one first? I don’t know if breeders do trial runs for their dogs’ new homes lol but I feel like you’re never gonna know until you try lol. We didn’t know how we’d cope with a husky when we adopted our first cause we didn’t think we were active enough but now we have 3 of them 😂🤷🏻♀️
Because I mean it’s not like you own a dog for x amount of years and get your Advanced Dog Ownership Certificate and get to level up your pet or anything. At least for me, who came from close to 0 dog experience, it has been about learning theory vs practice and what it actually means to have a dog, what I can realistically fess up to and what level I’m happy at. And I usually feel more comfortable suggesting non-working breeds for that, because there’s usually less of a height to fall from, but if it’s possible to get hands on the workaholic breed of your dreams without promising to have and to hold in sickness and in health ‘til death do you part? Better!
Now I’m from a place where fostering happens... almost never, but it’s reasonably common for posts to pop up in regional breed groups explaining their interest in the breed and offering to dogsit while owners go on holiday, to get a feel for the it. And it seems to work out pretty well.
