Some things get burned into your skin like fire. Things that mark a before and after in your life. Things you can't erase no matter how much time passes. They remain. Unchanging.
Oboro Shirakumo knew that very well. Maybe it was too much for a fifteen-year-old kid to say something like that so openly, but he knew. Because the day Oboro Shirakumo decided to stay late after class just to wait for his best friend and his extra lessons, all he was thinking about was how incredibly natural and ordinary it felt to want to share the same space as Shouta Aizawa.
He didn't need to think twice, or weigh pros and cons. It just happened. It's not like Oboro thought much about it either, or asked himself why things were the way they were. But if he did, if he had to pinpoint the exact moment when things started to happen like that...
He'd probably say it was that first day, when instinct itself made him drag his two friends, Nemuri and Hizashi, to sit at the same cafeteria table as that pretty boy with black hair and tired eyes. To barge into his life with a smile way too bright for such a rainy Monday, casually dropping a "You're Shouta, right? I'm Oboro, Shirakumo Oboro!"
He didn't ask if he could sit down. He just did. And he never left.
Yeah, that would probably be the day he'd choose. The day Oboro naturally started orbiting the planetary system that formed around Shouta every time he managed to make him laugh.
So that day, even though it was late and he hadn't told his parents he'd be past his curfew, there he was. Walking to the train station with Shouta by his side, the stars following them, while they had a one-sided conversation where the dark-haired boy complained about Hizashi and the other just laughed and nodded.
It was the topic of the moment. Because they were just teenagers, and teenagers do that: talk about their friends' relationships, how hard or boring classes are, and what they're going to do on the weekend.
That, and falling in love. Teenagers definitely fall in love.
"I'm just saying, I think it's completely unnecessary for Hizashi and his girlfriend to be swapping saliva all day long. I'm not saying don't do it, but it doesn't have to be all the time. It's honestly disgusting." Shouta had been complaining about the same thing for several blocks, and it's not like he was wrong.
"That's what it's like when you like someone, isn't it? You want to be as close to that person as physics will allow. That's why people kiss." Oboro, of course, had read that on a forum. Because even though he'd had a kiss or two in his life — two, to be exact — he'd never done it for that reason.
"I don't know. Really? I don't get it. Maybe because I've never done it." Shouta said it like it was the most obvious thing in the universe. Almost unnecessary information.
"You've never kissed anyone? Really?" But it wasn't obvious to Oboro. Not only because he was an idiot who spent more time looking at the sky than at his surroundings — and if it weren't for that, he probably would have noticed how little the other boy got close to people. No, not only that. Also because there was no way it had ever occurred to him that there wouldn't be a single person who didn't want to kiss Aizawa Shouta. It had a lot to do with how much he thought about it.
"No, never. Why do you sound so surprised? It's not like there's a line of people waiting to do it or something, Shirakumo." Shouta was so unaware of everything that ran through Oboro's body when they were together that it was almost painful to watch.
"I would." Whether there was a line or not, Oboro was first in it, with a neon sign that said —Pick me—.
"Okay." Shouta said it in a tone of voice he could have easily used if Oboro had asked to copy his homework, or take something from his lunchbox. Something ordinary. Natural. Everyday.
Incredibly, Oboro Shirakumo didn't feel a single ounce of nervousness. Quite the opposite. He felt peace. Because that's how things were with Shouta. They just happened.
He didn't feel nervous when he stood in front of his friend, or when he brought his hands to his cheeks to lift his gaze. No, he didn't even let out a nervous giggle when Shouta — in that tone of voice he used when he wanted something but wasn't sure how to ask for it — declared to Oboro that he had no idea what to do.
Oboro just told him to hold on and close his eyes. And that sight seemed like the most beautiful thing he had ever seen in his life. So much so that it felt like an insult that no one had turned Shouta's expression — eyes closed and waiting — into a painting worthy of a museum.
Oboro, who had never drawn anything more than the margins of his math notebook, decided he had to fix that atrocious crime.
He leaned in — because there was a height difference that called for it — and with a delicacy he didn't know he possessed, Oboro Shirakumo kissed Shouta Aizawa.
Just because of that act, he thinks that some things get burned into your skin like fire. Things that mark a before and after in your life. Things you can't erase no matter how much time passes. And even though Oboro was only fifteen and couldn't spell 'infinity' without getting it wrong, he was sure that this was one of those things.
The way Shouta pulled on his neck to bring him closer, almost imperceptibly. The way his mouth opened for him. The gentleness with which they moved in sync, coordinated, as if this weren't the first time. As if they'd done it a thousand times before. As if it were simply natural for it to happen.
Everything was going to stay so burned into this fifteen-year-old's head that he knew for a fact that this was exactly the way he wanted to keep being in love with Shouta.
Like this. Slowly. Smoothly. Ordinary. Natural. Just... doing it.
