We are raising money to finish plastering the Superadobe dome we built in 2013. This is the first and only adobe dome in Alabama, built using Cal-Earth methods and bags as well as local Alabama clay and gravel. Those who helped build the dome will be proud to know that it has stood the test of we...
A few summers ago; me, my family, and pretty everyone we know spent a lot of long days sweating in the hot July sun to build something called an adobe dome. Also known as a superadobe or eco-domes, the adobe domes were invented by Cal-Earth as a means of creating small but very sturdy houses with simple materials that people without construction experience could build themselves.
A friend had taken an extensive course in the construction of adobe domes and so enlisted my brother (who you can see in the link) and the rest of my family and friends to see if a bunch of people without building experience could indeed make an adobe dome with just bags, barbwire, gravel, mud, lime and hours and hours upon hard labor. Turns out we could, and we did! We made the dome a few years ago and I'm happy to report it is still standing strong today. =D
But we've never been able to raise the money to put the finishing touch on the dome, which is a layer of plaster. Plastering the dome would plug up any cracks between the layers of bags, keeping water from getting inside and preserving the structure for years to come. Unlike the rest of the construction, plastering is something none of us could do and would cost a fair sum of money to have applied.
My family and pretty much everyone we know worked themselves to the bone to create this adobe dome and would love nothing more than to see it truly completed. If we raise more money than we need, we'd happily use it to further improve the dome. We've always wanted to give it a proper door and windows as well, but really we'd be forever grateful just to see it finished. Anything donated would be deeply appreciated by me and my entire family and even if you can't donate you can still be a huge help to us just by sharing the link with your friends and asking them to do the same. =)
