blind tiger 🐅 Wrapping up our New England trip w a post dedicated to our lovely hotel in Maine: @blindtigerportland. With a fully stocked pantry & a quiet cupola, the hotel was such a wonderful respite from the hustle & bustle of Portland. Each room has its own individual style & signature and ours was no different. We slumbered in the Event Records room, and being married to a musician, loved the emphasis on music 🎼 #localhotel #ecofriendlyhotel #circulareconomy #sustainablebloggers #sustainableliving #slowliving #sustainablehotel #boutiquehotel #blindtiger #larkhotels #portlandhotels #mainehotels #blindtigerportland #onalark #mainelife #portlandmaine #oldport #oldporthotels #maine #visitmaine (at Blind Tiger Portland) https://www.instagram.com/p/CTnKcw_vgJD/?utm_medium=tumblr
Under a Buddhist Moon, A Journey into Sri-Lanka
This July we travelled 2 weeks through the jungle laden, beautiful rice fields of Sri-Lanka. We took a glimpse of Sri-Lanka with a 3-day tour, early through the Monday morning bustle of Colombo traffic we drove west 2.5hrs to Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage opened since 1975 which bears the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. The orphanage provides shelter to diseased, wounded and disabled elephants. As I worked in the past as a volunteer for an animal shelter, I was sensitive to observing whether the elephant’s rights and needs were being served. I am happy to report the conditions for the elephants were good. The conditions and space were superior to any zoo in the world could offer. I got to feed an elephant a fruit basket and it was an amazingly terrifying experience, but luckily the Elephant was patient with me slowly feeding them.
2hrs we drove to the centre of Sri-Lanka to visit the city of Kandy. The day before the celebration of Dharma day, when the Indian prince Siddhartha Gautama (Buddha) taught others how to be enlightened through meditation under a Boa Tree. We visited the Temple of the Scared Tooth of Buddha built 1807.
I had never been to a Buddhist temple before but it amazed me the calmness I felt when I entered. Full of natural light surrounded by people in a calm and meditative state more powerful than a cold judgemental cathedral. I placed a lotus flower in front of a guarded golden-rimmed throne that holds a tooth saved from his cremation.
The Rice Bowl of Buddha rests inside....
Meditation moment under a Boa Tree....
We travelled 3hrs north to visit Dumbulla Cave Temple (UNESCO World Heritage Site). 520ft above the surrounding plains in the base of Dumbulla rock rests 5 caves covered in ceiling paintings and sculptures of Buddha, his favourite pupil Ananda and the Hindu god Vishnu carved perfectly into the cave rock.
At twilight, we reached Sigiriya Rock Fortress (UNESCO World Heritage site) built in the 5th century by an egocentric king-slaying King Kashyapa. It was a fortress ahead of its time with irrigational technologies of water gardens that served the palace such as swimming pools. When you first begin to climb the stairs of the fortress you are greeted by two paws of a lion sculpted into the rock. An Indiana Jones moment if you ever dreamt of it! Passing a glazed mirror wall the King Kashyapa would have passed for the purpose of gazing upon himself. The 500 erotic paintings of garmented bare breasted women lament the cave walls.
That night we dined outside our hotel’s restaurant full of Buddhist pilgrims under the splendour of a full moon. On our last day of tour, we visited a small rural village, rowed a small canoe boat along a lake in dry-season. A large elephant stood solitary in the lotus covered marshes as traffic drove past on a nearby road. We ate lunch a rural village home, the women made food that with very mild korma spice for the groups of tourists visiting their natural kitchen. We drove back to Colombo to stay at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel.
Sadly, In April 2019 they were one of the hotels hit by a Terrorist attack. We had security checks before we entered and always felt very safe at the hotel. It was now beginning to become busy again with tourists and almost everyday weddings. In Sri-Lanka weddings seem a very important passage of life for the people and on every commercial street there is advertisement for wedding photography, beauty, clothing etc. In contrast to life in Switzerland where your education and career are more predominantly important in contrast. Inside the Cinnamon Grand is very cosmopolitan, with many restaurants to choose on site from a variety of Indian, Italian, American, A fish market, A bakery etc. The next day we took a 5hr Road trip to the Southern Provence.
Life in the Southern province appears to be more traditional and laid back in contrast to its commercial capital. Our resort Jetwing Yala is placed modestly within the out sketches of Yala National Park. The dry-season Jungle, its roads were quiet and dusty en route passing Rice and Salt fields. For over a week we didn’t hear a sound of a car just the roaring sound of the Indian ocean in front of us. The resort was damaged by the Indian ocean Tsunami, 2004 and was finally restored in 2014.
Architecturally it preserves a sense of nestling into its natural surroundings with open hallways and bathrooms. They have strong sense to have a social responsibility to their community and to be Eco-Friendly. We took a Safari one day in Unit-One of the National Park. It was fascinating and not buzzing with hordes of tourists even though it was a Saturday afternoon. The park was exotic, dry and quiet. We saw Crocodiles, Birds, Monkeys, Deer, An Elephant, Buffalo, wild pig etc. but no Leopards.
Due to the natural location, there wasn’t much need for a structured Safari the wildlife everyday wandered into the area even predatory Leopards. We saw an Elephant 3 times, the hotel named him affectionately Short-tail. Monkeys and Birds drank from the pool. Wild pigs, cows and Buffalo glazed the gardens of the hotel at dusk. It was hot most days around 34 Celsius but the sea breeze was strong so it kept as cool during the midday sun. The resort was in a quiet season and we took advantage of long undisturbed walks along the sandy coastline.
The first night we had dinner outside we heard the growl of a leopard close by in the dangled foliage under an Indian night sky. Some nights we lay on our balcony when the night sky was clear and watched the milky way far clear of traffic or light pollution. The roar of the waves close by. The Sri-Lankan people were very hospitable, warm and humble. We really lived on a plain of adventure and discovery those 2 weeks.
Ayubowan ‘May you live a long life’ Sri Lankan Greeting.
