I just read Good Omens (per your suggestion) Where has this book been all my life? It's really really good? Do you have any more suggestions for good summer reads because I'm itching to pick up another whopper
I’m glad to hear that you enjoyed it!! Definitely check out Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman’s solo books. Terry Pratchett’s Discworld novels have the same kind of witty humor and are honestly fantastic. My personal favourites are the Death centered ones: Mort (in which Death takes on an apprentice), Reaper Man (in which he retires because he developed too much of a personality), Soul Music (in which his identity crisis continues and rock music is invented), the Hogfather (in which Death and his granddaughter save Christmas), but all of them are amazing if you like fantasy worlds and stories about wizards!
Neil Gaiman’s books are a bit more serious in tone, but also really good. American Gods is great if you like religious mythology, it combines various gods from existing religions and anthropomorphic personifications of what people currently ‘‘worship’‘. Neverwhere is a good fantasy story, and so is the Graveyard Book, and the Ocean at the End of the Lane though very bittersweet is a phenomenal read if you like the theme of childhood vs. adulthood.
If you haven’t yet, read Douglas Adams’ Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy series too, they’re hilarious and perfect as a summer read.
The only book I know of that I find similar to Good Omens in terms of satirical approach to religious and demonic matters is Mikhail Bulgakov’s the Master and Margarita, however its humor (as opposed to Good Omens’ which is very for lack of a better characterization, British) relies heavily on the peculiarities of life in the Soviet Union. It’s one of my favourite books of all time and I highly recommend it nevertheless, just be warned that it’s not always straightforward, and requires more focus from the reader and is a bit more confusing and psychedelic than Good Omens.
On another note, there is a also a lot of really good Good Omens fanfiction. If you happen to like angst and pain as much as I do, you should read The Sacred and the Profane and the Full Circle series. They will break your heart and you will enjoy every second of it.
