The United States and China have reached a temporary agreement to reduce tariffs for 90 days, effective May 14, 2025. The U.S. will lower tariffs on Chinese goods from 145% to 30%, and China will cut tariffs on U.S. goods from 125% to 10%. The deal, finalized during high-level trade talks in Switzerland, is seen as a critical step to ease tensions in the ongoing trade war. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng called the agreement a foundation to prevent economic decoupling. Markets reacted positively, with the U.S. dollar rallying. Further negotiations are planned to tackle long-term trade imbalances.
