Benny Carter, By Way of Ed Berger

The late Ed Berger was a superb photographer, jazz historian, basketball player, Honeymooners fan, a devoted friend and collector of all things Benny Carter and was a good friend with a wry sense of humor. He also was a generous soul as told in this reminiscence by Ethan Iverson along with one of my all-time favorite Benny Carter solos.

Ed Berger: Jazz Historian, Author and Photographer, RIP

There are truly no words that can do justice to how I feel about the passing of Ed Berger. He was a good friend who, whenever I was visiting the Institute of Jazz Studies at Rutgers University, would inquire when Mosaic was going to release a Benny Carter set. Then we would start to talk about the music, or life at the IJS, or a Honeymooners episode. And he always had a Benny Carter solo he wanted me to hear. Ed not only had great ears for music, but also had keen eyes for the music as well. His photos are a real treat and from the IJS website come a few samples of his love and handiwork.

Trumpeter Joe Wilder: A New Biography

Ed Berger, a long time jazz historian, photographer and Institute of Jazz Studies curator and associate director, has devoted much of his time in the past few years with research on a biography of trumpeter Joe Wilder. Tom Cunniffe’s recent review in jazzhistoryonline recently gave an insight to this much awaited publication.
