The journey ahead for both mother and daughter would be full of peaks and valleys, but in that one moment, they owned the night.
Casey Sherman, from A Murder in Hollywood
Book Review: “The Last Days of John Lennon” by James Patterson with Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge
They say you can’t judge a book by its cover. And you can’t judge “The Last Days of John Lennon” by its title.
A non-fiction book by novelist James Patterson with contributions from journalist/authors Casey Sherman and Dave Wedge, “The Last Days ...” is a rehashed Lennon/Beatles biography that reveals nothing to anyone interested enough in Lennon and the band to read it.
As Patterson and his partners go back to Liverpool to the beginnings of the Silver Beatles, through Hamburg, to America, through the breakup and Lennon’s well-documented post-Fab activities, Mark David Chapman’s late-1980 activities pop up in occasional, short chapters. These are particularly sleazy bits with Chapman hitting on female fans outside the Dakota, fantasizing about murdering Lennon - with internal thoughts almost certainly made up - and a gross account of Chapman’s encounter with a prostitute that details his fear of vaginas and describes their evening together thusly:
“She begins to touch him. Her hand softly brushed against his erection. It’s both pleasing and terrifying.”
Lennon’s last days are, of course, discussed. But not with any details that haven’t been widely known for decades. The book ends with Chapman declaring to himself that his prison cell is a home where he’ll have plenty of time to watch TV and think.
Beatlemaniacs will enjoy the trip back to the days of Stuart Sutcliffe and Pete Best. And the music is always a joy to revisit - even mentally as spurred by words on a page. But the title is a misnomer at best and a lie at worst. And “The Last Days of John Lennon” ultimately conveys no new information, making it essentially pointless.
