The High School Novel You Needed If You Have Asian Immigrant Parents

The cutthroat atmosphere may sound exaggerated to some readers, but for me it’s all too familiar. Although I grew up on the other side of the country from the fictitious Shark Beach, I immediately recognized David’s experience of competing with other high-achieving peers. His sense of isolation and loneliness likewise feel uncomfortably real. Despite their shared racial identity, David, whose Taiwanese immigrant parents work at a restaurant rather than a white-collar job like most of his wealthier classmates’ parents, struggles to reconcile those differences that fall along class and ethnic lines.

WHEN TIGERS USED TO SMOKE

I have this rule about answering the phone: Never pick up the phone when it rungs on the hour of half hour, because it probably means bad news. Whenever someone has to make a touch phone call, they delay it until the hour or half past, because they’re reluctant and need a deadline. Maybe they turn on the TV and then resolve to make the call when the show is over. That’s what I do.

Acting, what the hell, I thought. It would get me out of the apartment, where I was buying Atari 2600 video game cartridges on the computer instead of blasting out words on the same keyboard. It would help with the book-publication anxiety and the book-writing anxiety, right? Maybe there was going to be an actor as a character in a future novel and I’d have to know his possibly awful journey.

Read this book in late March and early May of 2015 by Ed Lin about a Chinese American police officer stationed in Chinatown in New York City set in 1976. Robert Chow is a Vietnam vet and has struggles with alcohol. He knows his role is to be a community-relations rep as he is the only Chinese-American on the Chinatown beat and the only police officer who speaks Cantonese. He attends shop openings and community events, but he doesn’t get assigned more difficult roles. When his superiors do not take the mysterious death of an elderly woman, Robert investigates the case himself. Although the story doesn’t touch on the Vietnam War directly, from Robert’s perspective he is able to share a bit of what it was like for an Asian American to be part of the American forces in Vietnam.

That noodle place had become hot after it had been reviewed in the New York Times. It had been praised for being authentic while accommodating the Western palate. But the menu priced out anyone who actually lived or worked in Chinatown.
