*Note: these are just random thoughts I had on the world where Kat comes from. I wanted to include information here so I could have it for reference. I’ll type out a more cohesive and comprehensive piece and add more later as I think of them.
Edaros, parallel to earth. Similar in composition as far as land, air, and water go. Land masses are larger, big bodies of water are limited to three--two major oceans and one sea. Most of the land is uninhabited or unsettled. The terrain in most regions is very dry and arid, but closer to some cities it is more habitable, and crops are grown there. There are areas known as badlands or no man zones--which is ironically where free humans tend to make their homes. The demons who venture out that far are rogues or do not fit in with current society.
There are major cities that are very similar to major cities on earth (New York, LA, London, Paris, Tokyo etc), but generally more gritty, and underdeveloped, sharing only name, in some cases. There are small settlement s scattered about, both for humans or demons.
Cities are run much like Earth cities. There is a government, with each city having it’s own mayor or ruler. There is no overall governing agent for the entire world, but rather it is broken up into sections by city or region. There boundaries are clearly drawn. There were wars previously fought, and the rulers of the time finally settled on clear boundaries to try to stop most of the disputes.
Demons comprise the general population. Humans are sometimes kept as cattle for food, entertainment, or slavery. They are considered very weak and inferior. There are free humans in some outlying settlements, and they keep their lands heavily fortified from the demons. Demons don't always look humanoid, like Kat or her mother, Sara, and they are actually not as common. They are often ridiculed for looking like humans, but these humanoid demons are great for infiltrating, obtaining, and managing humans as they can lure or trick them into thinking they are the same species. This is what Sara does. Kat’s mother is not a soultaker, but a demon species who could manipulate humans, make them calm, use illusions and brainwashing to condition the slaves. Called an Alsir demon. Her job title was that of Minder.
Kat was the only soultaker in her world when her dad wasn't there, which made her unique among them.
The world has television and general advances in tech, but only the really wealthy and privileged have it. Kat and her mum are not among that sect. Her mother worked for a powerful demon, who was well off and Kat had the privilege of tech. Some things on earth are still very new but keep Kat is quick to adapt. The programs and references are vastly different. Popular shows/music/books/programs from this world do not necessarily exist on Edaros, or else they do in a different way.
Violence is common. People dying publicly is also common. There is a justice system, but murder is only a crime under specific circumstances. Killing humans is not wrong to most of them. A human is killed immediately if guilty of killing a demon. Demons who kill higher ranking demons are also punished if caught. Theft is punished if the criminal is caught. Sexual crimes are common and considered a form of theft but only if the victim is claimed. Otherwise, it is not punished, but most potential victims fight back.
Education is also only for demons and some privileged human slaves. There are schools that are similar to schools on Earth, though the subjects taught are somewhat different. English--or Common--is the most spoken language in Edaros, but most demon species have their own language.
Demons are susceptible to their own kinds of diseases, with some being immune entirely--like Kat or her mother. Humans, particularly those not well cared for, get sick rather easily and die quicker than intended. There are some healthcare practices, administered by the Minders and their assistants, but overall hospitals and other facilities are for demons and their kind.
