I can’t express how happy, hopeful, grateful and proud I am of you guys.
It’s been my second year of running Eddtober since I started it in 2017 on my main blog @lemjpanda13, and my first year running it here on this blog. But you Eddheads with your unconventional creativity, whether it be painting, cartooning, writing, game-making or whatever means possible - you make it all worth it. Even with one prompt, some prompts or all, you all make me see that you create for the fun of it and that you want to share out of a genuine excitement to tell your stories or paint your pictures - mentally or literally!
And before I keep talking, I want to say well done to all of you - especially the ones who couldn’t go on with the challenge because life got in the way. I’m so proud of you for taking the responsibility to draw the line for yourselves and take care of what needed to be done. Be it commissions, health, work, school, family - it called for more attention than Eddtober and I’m proud of you for dealing with it instead of suffering whilst doing the challenge. You’re all brave to go out there and deal with what you had to, it was the best choice you could make.
When I first began Eddtober, I had a goal in mind: to bring back the sense of love, kindness and community that I had when I first stepped into this fandom a little over five years ago this year. I was tired of seeing the Eddsworld tag and online groups feel like the same, dull, depressing grind of ship wars and discourse - especially on tumblr.
I missed the community who I loved and who loved back: be they newcomers, fans of kind and genuinely funny fans, comic writers, fanfic authors and so much more. I grew tired of the community (especially the one that surfaced after post-legacy) that constantly over-dramatises bad news, discourses and made people feel inferior because they didn’t like a certain thing or ship. And the content that these people made or influenced others to make just felt over-angsty, over-edgy, and left a bad taste in my mouth. I wanted to hold on a little longer and see hope for the better come to light.
But I got tired of not seeing it. If nobody else was going to offer that hope, I decided that I would.
I did what I could, and it wasn’t much, really. But when I saw the results of the challenge from others, my hope grew. I got excited about Eddsworld again. I found people who could create fantastic, funny, horrifying, creepy, crazy and overall beautiful works - people who I couldn’t have discovered by diving into the unknown immediately. Eddtober brought out the best of people in this fandom, and I sincerely believe it will continue to.
This challenge has a long way to go - but this is NOT the end of Eddtober. It’s the beginning. My dream for Eddtober, is that all will give it a go - not for discourse, drama or hate - but for something that has sustained this fandom even before Edd passed on.
A smile, a laugh at a good or dumb joke, and creativity abound - even in years of change, storms and uncertainty, those things have kept this fandom alive. Those things have kept Eddsworld spinning.
I’m so freaking proud of you all. I know Edd would be too.
