From the very beginning Kirei’s life revolved around the Holy Church. Kirei was a baby given up by his real parents to Risei while on a pilgrimage (I have a HC that he was possibly born in The Balkans, but that’s not what this meta is about). As such Kirei grew up in Rome, either in Vatican City or the surrounding areas. He went to school like a normal child would and primarily studied Catholicism until he was chosen to become an Executor for the Holy Church at the age of ten. 

The Executors are inquisitors of the Holy Church and are known as the bloodiest department. As an Executor one could take on a variety of specialties such as Magus, Demon and Vampire killing (all of which Kirei is very good at). If there was any entity or like that the Church felt threatened its existence, the Executors were sent to snuff it out. While the bloodiest department it was not uncommon for members to fall like flies. What was uncommon was someone like Kirei to survive forty years (As I HC him in his 50s at this point and still an executor) as an Executor.

Kirei was a devout follower of God (and still is to this day, though in a more twisted way) and there was a brief pause in his life where he moved away from the Executors department and Holy Church to try and find himself. This led to him studying a variety of topics where he could have held several phd’s and doctorates had he not dropped them at the last second, eventually leading to his marriage with Claudia in his final attempt at finding something worth living for. 

After his marriage ended Kirei returned to the Holy Church where he then took his vows of poverty, chastity and obedience and became an official priest while still being an Executor for the Holy Church. At this point there’s not much more as he would eventually study under Tokiomi and take place in the Holy Grail War. It was only after his death and realization (My HC being that he wants to kill his God and then promptly fade away from existence) that he would go back to the Holy Church and take up his role as an official priest (A job he takes seriously) and Executor whenever the Holy Church needs him (Which I HC as quite often).

In a TLDR; the Holy Church was and still is Kirei’s entire life. He knew nothing else and through all the suffering he experienced it helped shape him into the man he is today.

   when it came to summer, water balloon fights were to be taken extremely seriously. almost as serious as one with water guns but this one required a bit more practiced stealth. something she has gotten a bit better at over the years since joining Chaldea. it’s why she’s silent as she peeks from atop the ledge she’s perched herself upon, eyes honing in on her target down below. they were still, none the wiser.....perfect.

        Ritsuka raises her hand, the bright pink water balloon in her palm along with it. a second to line up her shot-- she had to be sure it’ll hit, otherwise it’s a waste. in one fluid, quiet motion, she hurls the object at her target, but--

  oh. oh no. someone was walking right in front of them. she has no time to shout out a warning and watches in horror as the balloon makes direct contact with their face, exploding and covering the stranger in water.

                    “-- oops.” she whispers.

the eyes of two predators meet -- one of them mortal. “oh?” orochi muses. an eyebrow raises, and his hands reach for his mouth, resting there quietly as he watches the person before him. he walks like he has experience hidden under that cloak. he acts like he can bring death to the people around him. there’s a confidence in his steps that can easily become arrogance.

“human,” he says, the word sliding off of his tongue with heavy derision. his expression is not malicious, rather he acts like an elder informing a child of their misdoings. “do you forget your weakness?” he takes collected steps towards the cloaked figure before him, unbothered with the idea of consequence. “the way you carry yourself makes me think you have forgotten your status,” he says, “you’re merely a mortal like the many around you.”

In the grand scheme of things Kirei’s marriage to Claudia was an experiment. This was a time in Kirei’s life where he didn’t know what he wanted, nor had any true purpose to strive for. He tried everything he could possibly think of to find something meaningful in his life, and his marriage to Claudia was no exception. Her illness being one of the reasons that he chose to marry her.

Kirei didn’t love Claudia, though that’s not to say he didn’t try. Kirei had a child with Claudia whom they named Caren but the outcome was the same, for he did not love her either. That’s not to say that he mistreated them because he didn’t. Kirei tried to be as good a husband and father as he could, even though his information on how a good husband/father should act was learned through reading and being told. Subconsciously though (as he was still unaware), Claudia’s illness and subsequent suffering was a reason he stayed for as long as he did.

I think it’s important to note that as time went on Kirei’s marriage with Claudia became his last ditch effort. Either he finally found something worth living for in Claudia and Caren or he stopped living altogether. Claudia knew this very well. She loved Kirei from the bottom of her heart and tried to help him feel something in any way she could (which is important to remember for later).

But in the end he was incapable of finding love for his wife and daughter. regardless of how hard he tried he felt absolutely nothing. He was fine with that, expected it even and prepared for such an occasion. He planned to take his life, seeing no reason to continue living if he could find no enjoyment out of it. He almost went through with it too until Claudia stepped in and took her own life, sending Kirei into a spiral where he broke down crying. 

Claudia died in his arms believing she was finally able to prove to him that he loved which was true, though not for the reasons she died believing. It was her suffering he enjoyed, but that’s not what I really wanted to touch on in this meta because it’s already well established.

Claudia Hortensia was in every sense of the word a saint to Kirei. Claudia knew of Kirei’s suffering and anger yet remained steadfast in her attempts at saving him, no matter the cost. She believed in him even when he knew he was not worth believing in. Claudia Hortensia was one of the first people to ever truly understand Kirei and no other would ever know him better than her. Kirei will always remember and thank Claudia as the one that gave him a second chance at life. It was one that he would not squander; even if it killed him.

As for Caren he could not take his daughter with him, so he gave custody to her grandparents. He felt an obligation and wanted her to live somewhere with those that could love her in return. He wanted her to live a better life than the one he lived. And he knew she could not do so if she stayed with him.

So in the end while the initial reason behind the experiment was a failure it led to developments that eventually gave him purpose in life. And from the bottom of his heart (however cold it was) he was truly thankful to Claudia and all that she had done.

anyways tdlr kirei didn’t love claudia. there was nothing romantic about their marriage.

HATE is a complicated emotion. By nature Aqua is a kind and forgiving person, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t people or things that she hates. Obviously she hates the Darkness and all creatures born from it-- That’s how she was raised to think, how she was trained to operate, and spending twelve years in the realm of Darkness definitely solidified that hatred for it. Yet hatred is also a facet of Darkness itself, a negative emotion that clouds hearts and pushes people further down the wrong path. She actively tries to forgive people and offer them second chances in order to stay on the path of Light, but there are some exceptions. I think if I were to go out on a limb here, I’d say that Master Xehanort is the primary example. He is the reason why she and her friends, as well as her Master and many Worlds, suffered so much for so long. He is the very face of the Darkness which tainted her own body and mind.

Aqua’s hatred for the Darkness isn’t so much borne from anger alone as it is from the amalgamation of a few emotions: despair, sadness, emptiness, fear. The only reason she was able to go back into that realm in the search for Sora was because she put her own feelings on the matter aside, and because she wouldn’t be alone again. Sora gave up everything to save them all, and so why shouldn’t she do the same?

It was the right thing to do. That doesn’t mean it was easy. 

Hate is an ugly feeling that Aqua primarily feels in her head and in her gut. She tries not to stew in it, however, because that isn’t something befitting a Keyblade Master. There are few people who have earned this attitude from her, but those who have have found that she can be much more unyielding than she looks.

“....Ah, that was amazing.” The sheer coincidence that Lucifer would stumble to witness how nimble they were when scouring the debris, as though they were walking on air as opposed to anything else. He would have thought them to have wings. Lucifer had indeed jumped a little - something like this wouldn’t have so much as deterred him before, but it seemed he was only reminded of how things were so different here. “Ah.. are you perhaps on the run from something?”
