The last thing Remus wanted to do was to retreat back into that scared little boy who only wanted to keep his head down and avoid the entire school. After all, he knew now how much friendship had saved him. He was happy these days and he wouldn’t be if there hadn’t been anybody to force him into making friends. There was also the matter of the Order to think about and a need to show to those who they weren’t so close with that they were still on the same side. That was why Remus found himself dropping back after Defence Against the Dark Arts and greeting Edgar. “Hey. I wondered if you could help me catch up on what I missed in Charms on Monday?” Really, it was just an excuse to talk to him.

Smiling sweetly at the waiter as he shows her to the table, Andromeda carefully folds herself into the chair, crossing her ankles daintily under the table. She had shown up earlier than she and Edgar had planned to meet, but she found these days that it was always better to leave before she strictly needed to, even if she wasn’t wrangling her daughter with her. 

Picking up the menu, she runs one finger down the list, examining what was on offer. It had been a while since she had come to this particular resturaant, but she and Edgar had promised to meet up whenever they were free and able to and both their schedules had cleared up for once. Andi knew that there were many people out there who did not maintain such close relationships with their ex-boyfriends, but losing Edgar had never been an option for her. Their break-up had hurt, of course, as most did, but they had always been close, and he was, after all, one of the very first people she had learned to trust outside of her family.  

Looking up at the sound of his familar voice, Andi breaks into a smile, standing up to embrace him softly, “Hello you,” she says, “It’s been a while.”

When: 29th December 1977 Where: Outside Flourish and Blotts, Diagon Alley Who: Remus && @edgarnbones​

Remus would have been happy to stay in the security and comfort of the Potters’ right up to the moment they had to go back to Hogwarts but Dumbledore had other plans. Just a simple reconnaissance mission, the letter said. A suspicion about one of the new hires at Flourish and Blotts for over the peak shopping period and concerns over a new selection of books containing information about darker magic than was usually sold there. He knew he was to keep an eye out for a familiar face who would be helping him, but he hadn’t been told who, no doubt some security measure but when he apparated into Diagon Alley and walked down the cobbled street to see Edgar Bones outside the bookshop he put two and two together and hoped for the best.

“Edgar!” he called to get his fellow Order member’s attention. His years as a Marauder had taught him a lot about being sneaky -- two Hogwarts students greeting each other as they meet up over the school holidays would be a lot less conspicuous than two people trying to communicate whilst pretending they don’t know each other. They weren’t friends. Remus barely knew him, just as he barely knew most people who should have some part in his life but the easiest way to make sure they were on the same page quickly was to not rely on non-verbal cues Edgar had little chance of understanding, not being James, Sirius or Peter, but rather to pull him into a friendly hug like they really were friends who would greet each other in such a way all the time and mutter in his ear, “Dumbledore sent you?”

He apparates again with Percy, which sends his toddler into another fit of scream crying, but Arthur doesn’t care.

Molly...Molly...Molly.

Would he even have a wife to go to? Would they send him to the morgue? The last time he’d been here, they’d made him see Dave....He didn’t know what he’d do if he had to see his wife on a cold metal table.

The few people in the waiting room titter at the noise Percy is making, or maybe its the obvious signs of injury on Arthur. He’s pretty sure he’s bleeding, and he he knows he’s not walking in the way he normally would, but nothing matters. Nothing will matter until he gets to hold that hand that fits perfectly into his again. 

“Hey-”

The witch at reception yells something after him as he races off down the hall to the maternity ward. He glances into rooms as he passes, the sight of quiet families upsetting among his own distress. How dare anyone have peace, how dare anyone have a happy moment, don’t they know what’s going on?

Arthur is still searching wildly and Percy is still screaming his head off when they run smack into someone. Arthur recognizes the man after a second, and his voice is harsh as he speaks the first words he’d spoken since they’d gotten away.

“Where the hell is my wife, Bones?!”

To say that Regulus had not been pleased when he heard that Edgar Bones had been tasked to keep tabs on Cassandra Avery would have been - something of an understatement.  A more accurate way to describe it?  It pissed him off.  Logically he understood the move on behalf of the Ministry.  Personally?  Edgar could fuck right off.  Cassie was not a stupid woman and her shadow had not gone unnoticed by her.  She and Reg had agreed that today, her shadow would have one of his own.  Reg waited for the pair in muggle London, having the benefit of knowing where Cassie was going.  Spotting the auror was easy, the idiot had a limp you could notice a mile away.  Regulus couldn’t help the smug smirk that crept onto his lips as he stepped, turned....

...and appeared behind Edgar, wand raised.  “You know, trying to be invisible with a limp like that...I don’t want to sound unkind but you’re a bit of an idiot.”

Mary’s eyes were wet as she left Jon’s room.  That fact that she should be getting back to work is forefront in her mind but the thought is impossible to entertain.  She could barely think, let alone work.  The first few steps out of his room were almost hazy and she knew that she could not work anymore that night.  She didn’t make it far down the hall before she knows she needs to stop.  To collect.  To compose.  

She slipped into an empty room, recognizing it from the lack of patient name on the door and as soon as the door closed behind her, she leaned against it hard.  Let out a breath she didn’t realize she was holding.  The sound of another breath in the room took a moment to catch her attention and her own breath came sharply with the surprise.  “Sorry.  I didn’t know anyone was in here.  I can go.”
