What do they even mean? What great secret do they hold? Well, over at @reflexletterpress I've managed to turn a mind-bogglingly huge run of numbers into something a little more familiar and human. The transcendental numbers pi, phi and e have been rendered into a graceful, flowing script. These are words, of course, written in an unknown language -- just one that needs a little translating. Nothing too difficult, right? The beginning paragraphs of the secrets of growth, circles and spirals are right there in front of you. Each piece is 11" x 14", printed in Tom Huck's Outlaw Black mixed with Van Son 10850 Black on Rives BFK 250gsm fine art paper. The right side holds the mold-made deckle edge. They are numbered in an edition of 27, with numbers 1-18 available individually and 19-27 available as identically-numbered sets. Finally, we come to the payoff. With my postcards and experiments, a subscription system would work well. But, there’s also the formal editions I produce, and my large catalog of past editions. There are prints of infrastructure, prints of geographic shapes, prints of planetary orbits, prints of biological processes, prints of linguistic constructions. Could these also fit into a subscription system? I think so. Somewhere in my library there’s bound to be something you’d like, and we could set up a quarterly or semi-annual system to get these out to people. It would also be interesting to produce editions with feedback and input; editions that were already spoken for before printing; editions that would be immediately going to a happy forever home. So this Friday I'm going to launch a Patreon with a four-tier system of support. There's an option for every budget and inclination. The new Astronomical Print “Six Solar Analemmae” is up on the Etsy shop in the Linktree. The analemma is the apparent path that the Sun traces out in the sky over the course of the year, describing a figure-8 as the Earth speeds up near perihelion and slows down near aphelion. But the Earth is not the only planet with an analemma. This print combines analemmae from six planets into one geometric composite. The Earth's analemma is the biggest and thickest, and the others cascade around it. The second image notes which analemma corresponds to each planet. You may noticed that Mercury and Venus do not have analemmae; Mercury is locked in a 3:2 spin-orbit resonance and Venus' day is almost as long as its year, so the sun does not move like it does for the other planets. 11" x 14", printed in black ink on Lettra Letterpress 220# Fluorescent White with a deep emboss.
