Ms Goehring: Can the minister explain why he believes our election should be up for sale to the highest paying bidder?
Mr. Amery: That member danced around criticizing union donations but certainly was quick to criticize corporate donations. The reality is that corporations form the backbone of our economic productivity in this province. They have an interest just like everyone else.

Ms Goehring: There is absolutely nothing in this piece of legislation that’s titled so sweetly, Bill 29, the Fairness and Safety in Sport Act, where the minister said the intention is to support all young women and girls, unless you’re trans. That part was completely left out. You know, he went on and said that his goal is to create an inclusive and safe place for sport for everyone, unless you’re trans. ... The importance of having all children participate in sport creates a healthy, stable situation for children, for families, and going after trans girls is dangerous. It is going to create the exact opposite of what the title of this bill is. It is not safe for trans girls and women. It creates a space where they’re being targeted and excluded. The fact that the legislation doesn’t even mention that, that it’s being sheathed in these nice words and the supportive language: it’s absolutely unacceptable that this piece of legislation moves forward.

Ms Goehring: Given that the Premier has proclaimed this summer to be the best in our history despite rising COVID case counts and a third wave that risks being even bigger than the second and given that this creates a lot of uncertainty for these events despite it taking months of planning to secure artists, vendors, and hire staff in order to pull off these events, will the Premier promise that if these events go ahead with planning only to have the rug pulled out from under them like the government did last summer in their failed Calgary relaunch, they will compensate these festivals and events for any costs incurred?
Mr. Kenney: Boy, Mr. Speaker, it must be pretty depressing to get up every morning with that kind of pessimism in your head.

Ms Goehring: As COVID cases skyrocketed across the province and variants became the dominant strain, the Premier promised Albertans that it would still be the, quote, best summer in Alberta history. Just yesterday he promised that festivals will be able to go ahead, including the Calgary Stampede. Moments later the Edmonton Folk Festival announced that this year’s festival will be cancelled. Looks like summer is already off to a bad start. What is the government doing to support these summer events that create jobs and provide a big boost to local economies? I’m told that they’re doing virtually nothing.
Mr. Kenney: Well, Mr. Speaker, I can’t think of a statement that better typifies the NDP than that kind of down-talking of Alberta, the effort to create more fear and hopelessness and despair, the pessimism. They are the party of pessimism.

Ms Goehring: I’ve heard various concerns that they have not had an opportunity to meet with you, so their fear is real because they haven’t heard it.
Mrs. Aheer: Actually, I will respond to that. We’ve met with them a whole bunch. You know, the truth is . . .
Ms Goehring: Can you indicate who you’ve met with, Minister, to go over your budget, who you’ve consulted with in this process?
Mrs. Aheer: We consulted with them right from the beginning . . .
Ms Goehring: Who is “them”?
Mrs. Aheer: . . . once we figured out our numbers. My goodness. I can give you a list if you like.
Ms Goehring: I would love a list.

Ms Goehring: The fact that they’re bringing back this old Conservative bullying tactic is just so disrespectful to our front-line workers. I’m not sure what the fear is around sitting around a table with a bunch of big, bad social workers or, you know, those terrifying child mental health therapists, long-term care workers, but what they’re doing is that they’re creating just an unsettling feeling right now in labour.

Ms Goehring: There’s impact on families when someone is in a car accident. [interjections] I hear a lot of chirping on the other side, and it would be wonderful to hear them enter the debate, Mr. Speaker.
Mr. Lunty: I’m not an injury lawyer, so I don’t know.
Ms Goehring: They’re saying they’re not injury lawyers. I mean, you don’t have to be an injury lawyer to know that if someone is injured in a car accident, that victim deserves fair compensation.

Ms Goehring: Mr. Speaker, given that I recently spoke with a constituent and former AHS employee who said that she would not have even considered going for a coffee with an individual who sells medical devices or is otherwise involved in a procurement process, even for appearances’ sake, given that the Premier recently stated that she and her cabinet are not involved in procurement, why is it that this government is so comfortable publicly meeting with and developing relationships with those who are?
Mr. Schow: Mr. Speaker, I’ll start my answer by calling a point of order. Those questions are certainly not relevant.
