Ms de Jonge: Madam Speaker, when these personnel requirements were written into the bill it is clear that the NDP had certain people in mind from certain organizations as their ideal members for this task force, namely the Member for Calgary-Glenmore’s former employers, environmental extremists, and ideological allies who think themselves far better at determining the direction of our electricity system than market forces that have made Alberta a bastion of an entrepreneurial competitive spirit in this country, which is otherwise weighed down to the point of economic despair by similar plans and task forces developed by left-wing governments in Ottawa and provincial capitals across the country.

Madam Speaker, as long as I have the privilege to stand in this House, I will fight against the same economic sickness and ensure it is not spread to our great province. We will continue to protect and strengthen Alberta’s private energy-only market. So long as the UCP is in government, we are not going to let the NDP devastate this province any more than they already have.

Ms de Jonge: When the NDP had their brief stint in government, they were prepared to completely destroy our private, energy-only market and bring in an uncompetitive capacity market, which would have inevitably led our province towards an inefficient, centrally planned, and overly expensive public utility. That would have ended Alberta’s competitive advantage in the electricity space. Bill 203 just shows that they’ve learned nothing since we’ve scrapped their terrible plans for a capacity market in this province. Bill 203 states that the purpose of the act would “require the Government to engage in coordinated planning,” and goes on to use the word “plan” or “planning” 20 times in the bill, including in its name. I’m proud to say that our government rejects the idea that central planning by a government-appointed committee is the best way to organize an economy.

Ms de Jonge: Since this victory the UCP government has shown that we will not cave to wokeness and allow our great province to be sacrificed to a small group of destructive activists. Mr. Sabir: One, the government has had the antiracism council report for the last six months now. I have been in cabinet. I have received those reports as well. I think that six months is enough time to analyze that report, to read that report. So, for God’s sake, release that report, and with that report release an action plan, and with that action plan strike a bipartisan committee of this House, who can codevelop an implementation plan and report on the progress. That’s the least we can do.

That report is based on consultations with indigenous communities, with black communities, with persons of colour communities. A group of 25 Albertans spent two years on that report. Albertans paid for that report. They deserve to see that report. The government needs to stop this culture of secrecy and step up to address this problem of racism. And let me say another thing on the floor of the House: we do have that report – we do have that report – and if the government doesn’t do that, I might consider releasing that report.

Mrs. Aheer: I’m just going to speak for a minute to the member. We’re here today to discuss the murder of a family. This is what happens over and over again. It is supposed to be a moment of recognition and to talk about things that need to be done, which I’m happy to share with the member... And to politicize the pain – we’ve had tears; we’ve had conversations; we are hurting – that is what is going to come out of our opposition today, a politicization of a family that got murdered.

I hope that the people of Alberta watch what just happened here. I hope that they understand that that’s where racism comes from: that fear, that divisiveness, that absolutely abhorrent behaviour... It’s despicable to use such a horrible situation for your own momentum. Absolutely despicable. I hope that the people of Alberta just watched that. It took away from all of the importance that needed to happen today for this family...

There are so many actions that need to be taken. That’s not the answer. That behaviour, Madam Speaker: that’s actually what drives division, drives racism, drives anger and hate, because that is anger and absolutely disingenuous behaviour towards this family. It takes years of engagement...

How unbelievably disingenuous and how politicized, despicable. And they say that they want to work together? That was absolutely planned and meticulous and completely against any ability to work together. That was planned, disingenuous, and against the ability to work together and build a collective society. That’s not how you do it. If this debate was brought into this House by that member in order to politicize the death of a family, shame on him. I hope that every single person who’s watching this expresses that exact same language towards him and the absolute shame that he brings upon all of us by politicizing the death of a family.

Mr. Deol: The Institute for Strategic Dialogue recently conducted a study of right-wing extremism in Canada that says, quote, the number of white supremacist groups in Canada has tripled in the past five years, driven by the Internet and social media. The study found that Alberta is one of the places where right-wing extremism online is concentrated. These findings are very disturbing news. Has the Minister of Justice read this report, and what is he doing to confront this problem?

Mrs. Aheer: The collective goal of this Legislature should be about making sure that all people in this province feel valued and respected, a place where all people can fully participate and contribute to our province’s future. I think that the D in NDP stands for “division,” and obviously they’re not interested in uniting this province together, making sure that at a time when we are mobilized to help out so many people in this province, we see people standing together, brothers and sisters side by side, making sure that we take care of our minorities at a time when they use division.

Member Irwin: Since the men on that side of the House refused to acknowledge the contributions of these front-line health care workers, many of whom are racialized women, and any one of these UCP MLAs could learn so much by speaking with these workers and by hearing the stories of people who do so much for all of us in the face of ongoing attacks by this government, to the minister responsible for status of women – your turn – what message would you like me to convey to these front-line workers? How can you possibly justify how they’ve been treated?

Mrs. Aheer: I’m curious if the member across the way has gone after Gil McGowan for attacking private-sector women in this province, especially given the fact that 51 per cent of our population is women and given the fact that per capita, for every 100 men entrepreneurs that we have in this province, we have 84 women. [interjections] I’m just curious. On one hand, they’re attacking this side, saying that we’re not standing up for women, which we are, I might add. We are back to pre-COVID numbers for women the ages of 25 to 54. Thank you very much to all the ministers who worked very hard to get women back to work. We should . . . [interjections]

The Speaker: Order. I had no problem hearing the question. What I did have a problem hearing was the answer. The hon. minister has about eight seconds remaining should she like to use them.

Mrs. Aheer: It’s a disgusting hypocrisy and oozing arrogance that are coming from the opposition, and they need to actually stand up for women in this province. Stop pretending.

Mrs. Aheer: However, I think this means nothing to the Member for Calgary-Buffalo, who believes that every initiative of our government is bad. I mean, they call people of faith nutbars. What do they want more in Alberta? Communism, evidently. And now this. This is the NDP’s war on women.
