[The reason for the braid-- Winry was the first one who ever braided Ed's hair for him, during the year before he and Al left Risembool. She did it while he was sleeping, intending what's typically considered to be a girl's hairstyle to be a statement that would indicate that Ed needed to cut his hair before he left for Central. Now Risembool's pretty small and isolated, and there weren't really any girls in the town who wore their hair in braids, and given that Winry was his and Al's only female friend, nobody ever really had occasion to explain it to him. When he woke up and saw it, though, he loved it, and asked her to teach him how to do it. She kept her mouth shut about it, for three reasons- one, it was a good way to keep his hair away from the shoulder port while it was still healing; two, teaching him how to braid using her own hair was good dexterity practice for newly connected automail fingers; and three, she thought it'd be really hilarious when he finally did figure out that it was a hairstyle generally favored more by girls than by boys. By the time he finally did figure it out, he just kept wearing it, figuring he wouldn't give her the satisfaction of seeing him change it.]
