Police battle protesters as thousands march through streets over tuition fees
Clashes between police and protesters have erupted during a march by thousands of students calling for an end to tuition fees and student debt. There were scuffles between officers and demonstrators, including some wearing black hoods and scarves covering their faces. Some protesters broke through a police cordon which was put up across a road. Organisers had expected a large turnout after the event was personally endorsed by Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn. "Events that six or 12 months ago were attracting 10 or a dozen activists are now seeing hundreds of people turn up," said Deborah Hermanns, from the National Campaign Against Fees and Cuts.
It gives people a real sense of hope that the leaders of the opposition party are prepared to stand up for free education

Protesters assembled at Malet Street in central London before passing Parliament, the Home Office and ending outside the Department of Business, Innovation and Skills. Shadow chancellor John McDonnell accused the government of "betraying" students as he addressed the crowds. In a statement read out at the rally, Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn also threw his support behind the protesters by demanding the abolition of tuition fees. A similar march last year attracted more than 10,000 people and ended with a series of scuffles and accusations of police violence.
Education is a gift from one generation to another, it is not a commodity to be bought and sold.
