No bc Edward Bloom is such an interesting character to me. He isn’t a bad person, but he just wasn’t there for Will when he needed him to be. He would be a terrific babysitter or cool uncle, but he did not make for a great father.

But that being said, he definitely did still try. He told Will stories and tried to get him to think outside the box, but he simply wasn’t built for fatherhood. He is a man of ambition and travel, and that kind of person isn’t really fit to be a father to a very vulnerable young human being.

Big Fish as a whole is a terrific exploration of family dynamics and how, despite meaning well, parents can still hurt their kids and leave them feeling neglected or abandoned, and when you should and shouldn’t forgive family for the things they’ve done. Edward Bloom isn’t a bad person, simply a lackluster father.

I think a lot of that comes down to the time period as well, the pressure to have kids after the end of the war during the baby boom. It’s a really neat showcase of “hey, if you’re not fit to be a dad, don’t have kids. This lifestyle isn’t for everyone” and a reflection of when the story takes place.
