KING GEORGE VI by EDWARD SEAGO (1948)

With landscape he [Seago] had a total recall for up to seven years, he estimated and yet curiously, with portraits, this gift did not apparently always apply. ‘I am having an anxious time painting a portrait of the King,’ he wrote to John Gregory. ‘Not enough sittings - they are too far apart and one works under difficult conditions. He is very helpful and, on the whole I don’t think it’s going too badly.’ There were three sittings in a small room in Buckingham Palace and afterwards Peter Seymour [Seago’s partner] borrowed the King’s RAF tunic and ‘stood in’ so that Seago could work on the painting in his studio.

[...] Only the painter’s close friends could notice that the King’s expression in the picture bore an uncanny resemblance to that of Peter Seymour.
