“Remind me again how long Charlie grounded you for?” Edward asked, looking at Bella as they sat together at a lunch table in the school cafeteria. “Because I have to say, not being able to see you isn’t exactly starting our engagement off right.” He was speaking quietly, so no one besides her could here him. He knew she still wanted to keep their engagement under wraps, at least until she had found a good way to tell her father. Not that her being grounded had done very much in terms of keeping them apart. “Also, I should warn you that Alice is probably going to want to start talking wedding plans soon.”
“I don’t understand you sometimes. You can commit to forever with me, being chained to my side due to lack of humanity, and being immortal, but the very idea of marriage, which is essentially the same thing, is an issue? You do understand why that doesn’t make any sense, right?”

Listen, Edward hadn’t been interested in humans for a long time. Despite the fact that he occasionally needed them for food purposes (though he was quite selective as to whom he drained), reliving high school over and over again had made him numb to any of their attractive qualities, and, to be able to hear their thoughts--this made the feeling only worse. Everything they though, even if it wasn’t a conscious choice, was obnoxious drivel that made the vampire want to smash his face into a wall. Humans were so...unbothered by their own ridiculous and trite behavior.
For the first time since he’d became a vampire, there was a human that had his interest piqued. It wasn’t the way she looked, no, with long, kinky curls and smooth, dark skin, she wasn’t out of the ordinary (at least that’s what he told himself), instead, he was interested by the fact that he could read everyone in that room’s mind except for her. No matter how long and hard he tried to crack open that shell, he got nothing but a wall. There was just something special about that, peace and quiet, that practically made her irresistible. Apart from the fact that she made him so thirsty that he wanted to bleed her dry in front of the entire class but that was normal, wasn’t it? At least, for a vampire.
