I finished Edward I: A Great and Terrible King by Marc Morris - ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This was a highly entertaining read about a divisive figure in history - best known from the movie Braveheart, Edward I proved to be just as cold and brutal in reality as he was depicted in the film. Having learned a few years ago that my mother's family is descended from his daughter Joan, this figure inspired me to investigate him and the rest of our ancestors further - and this account did not disappoint. This helped me understand in full the politics behind his conquering of Wales and Scotland, and the extent of the ruin England had become by the time of his death, despite his iron fist and more importantly because of it: the debts incurred by his crusading and rebellion-crushing were mind boggling to read about, and that's before you take in the currency difference 😂 Marc Morris compiles all this info in a highly readable account - his writing style is one of the most entertaining I've read so far in historical accounts. Swipe to see a few of my favourite later quotes, all from Edward's later, more volatile years 😂 . . . . . #books #bookstagram #history #edwardlongshanks #agreatandterribleking #marcmorris #bookreviews #fivestarreviews https://www.instagram.com/p/CnNfyuRr_f0/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=
