It was what he was owed, of course, for years of service - practically from birth - and in his final moments before he turned coat, he was going to steal the rug out from under his old friend, Dr. William Birkin. Birkin had been up to more things than just floundering around Annette's skirt, it seemed. He'd been working on something special. The G-Virus.
And Albert desired it. Not only would it be evidence enough for the United States to see that the Umbrella Corporation had been working on biological weapons, it would also be perfect for Wesker to sell to the highest bidder. Once he procured a small sample to study for himself, of course.
Wesker descends to the underground lab that he'd visited many times before. After all, it was in this very lab that Albert had become the crowning achievement of the Spencer Foundation - unbeknownst to him - when he'd been injected with the Progenitor virus. Black combat boots strike hard against the metal plating, before coming into contact with a dark brown, viscous substance that attempts and fails to seep through his rubber sole. The puddle squelches beneath his even & measured step. Crimson boot prints stain the floor as he walks.
Blood. Beautiful.
Its presence is known to him, so familiar. The iron smells sweet to his senses... But why are there puddles of it, scattered everywhere, staining the elegant floor of the underground compound?
Newly enhanced eyes sweep the too-quiet corridors. No alarms, nothing. Almost as if someone had shut down all the defenses.
"You are getting too lazy, William," Albert hisses, the thought of If I was still security chief, this would have never happened, dancing around that grandiose + confident brain of his.
And though the hairs at the back of his neck do not stand up, Wesker is acutely aware that something has gone wrong in his dear old friend's lab.

Surprisingly, he is not intercepted for some time, and manages to almost make his way completely to Birkin's lab before being attacked by a zombie. The creature is felled in one shot, but the sound is enough to alert William of Wesker's presence. He steps out from a panel and calls Albert over.
"Birkin," comes the stilted syllables rolling off of Albert's tongue.
"You're alive," William simply says.
What ensues after their little acknowledgement of each other is a verbal fight that explodes like a powder keg. Wesker throws everything in Birkin's face: how he felt betrayed, how he was going to take the G-Virus for himself, and how he was going to make sure that William went down for all of this.
Albert knows, deep down, that he is only being petty over William's fascination with Annette.
But that doesn't matter. Only he does.
The gun is trained on William's chest as the last sample of the G-Virus is clutched between shaking fingers. The weapon glints in the light, and Wesker is all cold gunmetal and tundra, motioning for the sample with a tilt of his head.
"Give it here. I will not ask again. You know me, William, I do despise repeating myself."
It is only then that Albert allows himself to see the blood blossoming upon white fabric, littering Birkin's abdomen and chest in brilliant crimson.
A sudden sound breaks the tension that bubbles so thick between them: a door clambering open with a shriek. All at once, many things occur, dominoes falling into place.
A ragtag group enters the lab. William Birkin injects his dying body with the G-Virus and starts to mutate. Dr. Albert Wesker turns on his heel and takes cover, because while he had successfully mutated, he isn't so sure that William will survive, nor is he sure just who - or what - William will become after the infection.
William doubles and triples in size, part of his arm becoming engorged with blood, a single eye dancing at its center, desperate to see just who was causing ruckus in the lab. Birkin starts to rage as a target is spotted, a man in a gas mask. He charges at pipes while the man moves and says something about the group pushing forward.
And Wesker simply watches. . . until he turns and is face to face with the same group from earlier, a woman whose covered face draws his eye. Her hair is short and dark, framing her face, and a blond brow lifts in slight amusement over his own black glasses.
"Hm..."
Eyes suddenly shift to see the USS patches on their uniforms. The Umbrella Security Service. He could work with that.
"Dr. Albert Wesker," he murmurs, "Chief security officer. I was responding to an on call complaint about the lab security network being down. Identify yourselves as per protocol."
