I’ll Win You Over
The day that Uraraka invited him to come to the amusement park with her was the same day Izuku learned was true betrayal was.
Earlier on that day, Izuku received a text, asking if he wanted to take the extra ticket Uraraka had won to spend the day at the local amusement, and, since he had nothing else to do that day and he was too sore to keep training, he accepted. Apparently, Todoroki had gotten a very similar message that day from Yaoyorozu, and when they both arrived at the amusement park, neither girls were “able to make it.” It was a complete lie and both of the boys knew it, but there was no point in leaving now. They were in the park already.
“They lied to us,” Izuku muttered as he pulled his backpack on after he showed the guy at the ticket counter the screenshot of Uraraka’s barcode.
Todoroki nodded, “Do you know why?”
Izuku knew exactly why, but there was no way he’d tell Todoroki. He’d only told Uraraka about it a week ago, so he was in even more disbelief that she pulled this now. Even worse than that, why was Yaoyorozu in on this? He wouldn’t put it past Uraraka to mess with him and tease him about his crush on Todoroki, but he had more faith in Yaoyorozu. That, and he hadn’t even told her about it. They weren’t very close, he still considered her to be a friend, but he wouldn’t entrust one of his most precious secrets with her. Not that Uraraka could really be trusted with it either, but that was beside the point.
“I don’t know,” Izuku lied. “But I guess we might as well make a day out of it? What do you want to do first?” He gnawed on his lip. This really was like a date, even if neither of them had thought it was. That’s what Uraraka had in mind, he knew that already, but he couldn’t count it as one if Todoroki didn’t think it was too, so he didn’t say anything about it.
Todoroki shrugged. “I’ve never been here before. What do you think is fun?”
“Have you ever been to any amusement park, Todoroki-kun?”
Todoroki shook his head, raising an eyebrow. “Should I have been?”
“I mean,” Izuku shuffled his feet on the pavement, “it’s kind of a part of childhood. Most people have been at least once, I think. Have you ever been on one of those festival rides?”
“No.”
“Well, I know where we’re starting then,” Izuku decided, and began making his way to the closest spinning ride. Todoroki lagged behind him, but caught up once he made it to the end of the line. “Does this seem good?”
“I guess so.”
Izuku bit his lip and asked, “Are you okay with being here? You don’t sound very excited.”
“I’m just thinking. Sorry.”
Izuku shook his head. “Oh, no, it’s fine. I just don’t want to force you into any of the rides. This one you get to control how fast you spin, so I thought it could be a nice start!”
Todoroki nodded again. “Yeah, that sounds nice. Though, what are those?” He pointed to a booth in the middle of the giant walkway of the park. There was a tub of water in the middle and floating pegs that players were supposed to toss rings around. There were massive stuffed animals nearly as tall as Izuku hanging from the top of the booth, waiting for someone to finally win them.
“Those are games, you have to pay extra for them, but you can win prizes if you get so many points. Do you want to check it out afterwards?”
“Yeah,” Todoroki replied, his hardened expression softening a bit. Izuku wondered why.
He also wondered why he was so calm standing here in line with Todoroki when he had a massive, embarrassing crush on him that Uraraka had taken advantage of. Maybe it was because they’d been friends for over a year now, but it also might have been because of the huge line of people all around them. Either way, it was fun to be able to spend a day with Todoroki. Even if it wasn’t a date like he really wanted.
They were let into the ride finally, and the two of them chose a cart to sit in; the carts were themed after different pro heroes’ costumes, and they managed to snag one of the few All Might ones, to Izuku’s excitement.
The cart was somewhat tight quarters, especially since Izuku had grown a bit since first year and Todoroki was already tall to begin with, but they managed. Izuku’s knee knocked into Todoroki’s from the other side of the cart, and he put his hands on the wheel in the middle, to spin the cart around to whatever speed they wanted.
“Do you want me to start slow?” Izuku asked once the ride was full and he could hear the hiss of the machine coming to life.
“Sure.” Todoroki leaned forward to put his hands on the opposite side of the wheel. “I’ll help you.”
It really was the stupidest thing to get flustered over, but Izuku’s ears burned, and he knew it wasn’t from the heat of the spring sun. Todoroki’s knees were pressed even closer to his, now that he was leaning forward, and Izuku tried to ignore it.
The ride itself was relaxing, the breeze sifting through Izuku’s hair and likely messing it up beyond fixing, but he was having fun, so he didn’t care. Todoroki’s hair clung to his cheeks with every spin, since it had grown a bit and could move more freely now. Izuku thought it looked ridiculous, and he laughed when Todoroki spit stray strands from his mouth when the ride stopped.
“I should have put it up today,” Todoroki commented when they exited the ride. He pulled tangles from it and smoothed it back out again. “You probably don’t have a hairtie, do you?”
Izuku shook his head, he had no need for them, he’d trimmed up his hair even more since the start of second year. “Sorry, maybe there’s a shop around here that sells some? There are always gift shops.”
“Alright. Can we look at the game, first?” Todoroki asked, though he seemed hesitant to ask.
“Oh, yeah!” Izuku rushed over to the game they had seen from the ride and looked at the sign. It was 100 yen for one ring, 500 for ten, and 1000 for twenty to toss. In order to get a small stuffed animal, you had to just get one ring on, two for a medium one, and five for the big one. “Was there a prize you had in mind?”
Todoroki’s eyes got big and he looked away from Izuku, glancing up at the bigger prizes hanging from the top. “Um, that one.”
He pointed up at a massive teddy bear with a red and white spotted bowtie. It was cute, Izuku was a bit surprised that was the one he was looking at. Izuku was reaching for his wallet when Todoroki added, “Oh, I can pay for it, Midoriya.”
Izuku wanted to pay for it. It was just an instinct to get Todoroki something he wanted, Izuku guessed. If he bought twenty rings, he had a better chance of landing five. And if he got any extra, then he’d still be able to get something for himself.
But, Todoroki had a different idea, he guessed.
“No, it’s alright. My treat, okay?” Izuku handed the bill to the worker and was given a handful of rings. “You can toss some too!”
Todoroki blinked, but held his hand out to receive the rings.
They tossed all of them until they were gone, Todoroki missed all but one, and Izuku made four. Enough for the teddy bear.
“Midoriya, let me pay for more,” Todoroki said, firmly.
The worker pulled the bear down from its hook and handed it to Todoroki. The bear was incredibly soft and when its feet were touching the ground, it stood to Todoroki’s chin. Izuku didn’t know how they were going to drag it around for the rest of the day, but it was worth it for how excited Todoroki looked about it. He was so cute, Izuku’s stomach flipped and his heart was going wild in his chest.
Then it registered what Todoroki had said to him. “Oh, no, Todoroki-kun, you don’t have to do that. I’m fine.”
Before he could get the sentence out, Todoroki had already handed the worker another 1000 yen. “Which one?”
Izuku sighed and pointed to the medium level. There was a fluffy rabbit plush that had an All Might shirt, and it would be much easier for Todoroki to get that. Plus, he didn’t have many stuffed animals in his dorm, he could always use more.
“Okay, I’ll get it for you. Hold this.” Todoroki handed off his giant teddy bear and Izuku’s nose sunk into the fluffy fabric. It smelled of plastic and chlorine, from the water that sat below it. But he could see why Todoroki wanted it so badly, it was great to hug.
Izuku watched as the rings plopped into the pool surrounding the pegs, but eventually, Todoroki landed the two he needed.
The worker commented, “You two are pretty good at this, what’s your secret?”
“Um, we train a lot,” Izuku answered, taking the bunny plush from the worker and hugging it close to his chest. He turned away before the worker could ask any more questions.
“I think he knew who we are,” Todoroki commented once they’d put a bit of distance between them and the worker.
Izuku nodded. “Yeah. He probably thought we were on a date too. I don’t want him spreading rumors…”
“Don’t you think this kind of is a date? Unless this isn’t what a date is,” Todoroki asked, like it was a genuine, serious question.
Izuku stopped dead in his tracks. “Wh-what? No...I don’t think that’s what it is. It was supposed to be a meet-up with our friends, who couldn’t make it.”
Why was he saying this? He was being so stupid, denying it. Of course he wanted it to be a date, more than anything. Why would Todoroki even be asking about it though, unless he was horribly uncomfortable with being alone together.
“Oh. Then what would you consider a date if this isn’t it?”
Izuku clutched the stuffed rabbit harder against his chest. It was the only thing keeping him from jittering over the discussion. “Um. I guess it’s when two people plan to spend time together, when they have an interest in each other. Usually it’s meant to get to know each other, or if the couple is already together, time to improve their relationship.” His heart beat fast, the rushing in his ears refusing to take a break. Technically, all of what he said could be applied to their situation, if a few words were twisted just slightly.
“So. Is it okay if this is a date? It sounds like it to me,” Todoroki pointed out. His head poked over the top of the bear he was struggling to walk with and Izuku died on the inside.
“Um, it doesn’t...bother me if it is.” Izuku hid his face in the rabbit’s fur and hoped it would make him disappear completely.
Todoroki nodded, pushing the teddy bear down so he could look at Izuku better, and confirmed, “Alright, then I’m going to call it a date. I’ve wanted to go on a date with you for a while.”
Instead of feeling betrayed, like he had when he’d arrived at the amusement park gates, Izuku felt blessed to have a friend like Uraraka.
“Yeah, me too.”

Stay Close to Me
Izuku rubbed his eyes and clenched his fists to keep his balance as he knees quivered. He hadn’t slept due to the anticipation of today’s competition, and his eyes glazed over staring at the ice that lay beneath him.
A finger tapped on his shoulder, and he shuddered as he slowly turned around to see who the culprit was.
“Are you okay?” a soft-spoken voice asked him, laced with worry.
Izuku nodded vigorously. “I'm fine. Just…nerves you know?”
The man behind him grunted in understanding.
Though, this man was much more than just someone asking if he was okay.
He was Todoroki Shouto, five-time gold medalist and the only one who had the patience to coach him. They'd been working together for a few months now and before that...well Izuku was a fan to say the least. Shouto and his father were legends, and Izuku wanted nothing more than to be able to skate like them.
He wasn't a huge fan of Shouto's father...not like he was of Shouto. It was hard to escape that man though, he had a tight grip on what Shouto could and could not perform, and had been his personal coach since he was a young child. Only recently had he gained independence from the strict and tight styles that his father had insisted on.
As Izuku wasn't a fan of his father, he also wasn't a fan of that tight, closed-in skating style that Shouto had been forced to learn and perform.
Izuku was in awe of Shouto's own flowing, free style that he was able to do after cutting away from his father’s rules when he became an adult. Watching it was like watching two skaters at once, one burning with fiery passion, and the other unsure and distant; the intricate footwork and risky jump combinations never matched that melancholy expression.
Izuku had always aspired to be a skater like that; someone who could always surprise the audience. They never knew what new move Shouto would include in his routines, and that was what Izuku had latched onto. Shouto was mysterious, and before he’d been able to have a conversation with the man, he’d seemed intimidating.
After months of training together, though, Izuku learned that Shouto was less than adept in social circumstances, and wasn’t all that intimidating at all. They’d been able to form a sort of trust bond between each other in the recent months.
Ah, and just how did the famous Todoroki Shouto end up coaching Midoriya Izuku, who hadn’t even gotten bronze in the last Grand Prix event? Izuku had put out an ad on a whim, accompanied with a video. Izuku had worked hard to create a perfect imitation of one of Shouto’s gold-winning routines, and had been running on only two hours of sleep when he decided to post the video.
He may have tagged Shouto in the ad, and he may have been hoping he’d get a response from him specifically. But that didn’t mean he thought it’d work.
It worked well alright. Within two days of posting the ad, there was a knock on his door, and when Izuku opened it, he was greeted by a man two-toned hair and beautiful mismatched eyes, who had the smallest confused smile on his face.
Shouto hadn’t sent Izuku any sort of confirmation of accepting the ad, he just showed up to Izuku’s door.
I want to talk to people, but I’m also very nervous to coming off as annoying or clingy and I really don’t want to ruin my friendship with people, so I don’t know what to do. I’ll just uhm.... Wait for someone to talk to me. Yes... I’ll do that.
i came home smelling like burgers hmmm....
