Black wings. The Wand of the Maricourts gripped in his hand. Flickering candles and blood pooled into lines on the ground. A sacrifice.
Eero was the sacrifice, just as he'd been as a child.
He sometimes dreamed of his father, not that he'd ever admit that to Despina. Like Despina, Eero never knew what his mother had looked like, but he saw his father's reflection whenever he looked in the mirror.
He shared his green eyes with his father, though his face wasn't as slim, and he could barely hold a wand, let alone use it like his father could. Adam Darktide came to him as a nightmare, always looking to take from his son, never caring for the life he'd created. He wasn't anything to his father, just a resource to be exploited. Despina had inherited his gift, while Eero appeared to be be useless.
But he wasn't useless. He had the incredibly rare angelic gene from his mother, and might one day stand as an equal beside his sister if he could learn angelic magic.
He tried to remember this fact every time the nightmare came. Adam Darktide didn't know about what his son inherited. It gave Eero a chance to silence the nightmares in his head before his father caught up to him. It gave him the chance to survive.
Something was about to happen. Something big. The spirits weren't able to be clearer about what it would be, but they had swarmed Rien's mind, urging her to make a late night visit to Arkhelios to find the person they wanted her to speak with. It wasn't that big of a deal to teleport to Arkhelios without waking her parents up, and if they caught her returning, she would just lie and say that she missed her Arkhelios parents and had stopped in to spend time in her room there. No one expected her to sneak out at night, so her parents didn't set up the same security spells they did for Theo.
"Princess Bellamy, I didn't expect to see you so late. Is something wrong?"
Ginevra emerged from her temple, looking worried. Rien felt stupid for not thinking about the security in the temple, especially when showing up in the middle of the night. It wasn't like she'd planned this daring escape. The spirits hadn't given her any time to prepare a well crafted lie for Ginevra.
"Nothing's wrong," she lied. "I just had something urgent to discuss with Eero Darktide. I realize that it's late, but do you think he'll speak with me? It's a matter of some urgency."
Ginevra gave the teen a confused look, but everyone in Arkhelios knew about Roman's daughter. When Rien said something, it was usually wise to listen.
"Of course. I'll go see if he's awake. Come inside, Arkhelios is no place to wait outside in the middle of the night."
While Rien waited for Eero, she tried to take in her surroundings. While Adam had once visited this place, Rien had never been inside. He hadn't mentioned the various crystals hanging from the roof or piled on the floors. There was a great crystal tree that lit up the room which must have been a thrill for Adam. Rien knew the value of crystals for spiritual work, but that was all. The crystals were nice to look at, but she had no interest in using them for magic.
The Lane family. It's missing the youngest child. These pictures were from a happier time.
"Why isn't there a picture of the youngest?" Rien asked. The spirits made an uncertain noise in her mind at the question. Rien rolled her eyes at the "all knowing" spirits who liked to make comments without being able to clarify them.
"I recognize Lukas and at least one of these guys looks just like them. Which ones are their parents?"
The spirits at least had the answer to that question.
Riley. Lukas. Linus. Luke. Leander. Linus and Luke are their parents. Katie Lee was born after Riley died. She has green eyes from her grandmother.
Sometimes the spirits sounded more like a trivia contest than a source of wisdom. Rien knew so many useless facts about people that she would never use, and when she did, they usually just creeped people out. What was she supposed to say to Lukas when she saw them next? "I hear your youngest sister has green eyes?"
"You guys talk about Linus sometimes," she said, looking closer at the pictures. "He's-"
Angry. Lost. Dangerous. Pathetic.
Despina whirled around when she heard footsteps approach. This had to be Eero Darktide.
"Hi, my name is Eero. I think I've seen you around here with your dads. You're Luciana, right?"
Demon. Demon, but not. Heir of the Firstborn. The First Ones. Angel.
Rien stared at the guy in front of her with interest. He was handsome, far more handsome than she remembered, if they had indeed crossed paths before. Maybe he had come into her dad's restaurant while she was helping out, and she hadn't been paying attention.
He had dreamy green eyes and a face that certainly could belong to an angel. There was a sadness in those eyes, but hope as well.
His sister is with Theo. His sister is his hope. The Maiden in Yacothia was his ancestor. We remember her from before the beginning of time. Have the angels spoken to him?
"It's Rien," Rien replied, still lost in those green eyes. "It's actually Princess Adrienne Bellamy, but you can just call me Rien. This might sound strange, but I was told to talk to you about something."
"Oh, you're that Bellamy!" Eero exclaimed excitedly. "I've heard about you and your family. My best friend, Malik, is a Bellamy too. He says that his mom can do a bunch of crazy stuff and so can you. People talk a lot about you and your family here."
Rien sighed at the reminder of her reputation. As much as she hated it, she couldn't deny the rumours. The spirits were the only reason why she was here in the middle of the night, meeting a near stranger.
"Yeah, my family is pretty infamous. My older brother, Theo, is usually the one people gossip about, but I'd imagine that I'm a close second. People don't understand our family's gifts. Either way, it's those gifts that brought me here tonight. I hope I didn't wake you up or anything."
Eero scowled at the reminder of his nightmare.
"No, I wasn't sleeping. Besides, it sounds like you're here for an important reason."
Rien nodded, trying to form a sentence in her head that didn't sound insane to a "normal" person.
"The spirits want to let you know that something big is happening very soon with Jubilant Accosts. They've intercepted chatter about it, and want to know if you've heard anything about it. If you don't know, then they want to warn you about it."
"That's a little ominous," Eero joked nervously. "No, I don't remember hearing anything about Jubilant Accosts. Should I have?"
"The spirits know your ancestry, and want to know if the angels have spoken to you. They don't always appear to angel hybrids, but these times are strange. Do they know what the Ocean has planned?" The baffled look on Eero's face told Despina everything she needed to know. "Okay, so I'm guessing that you haven't heard from them then. In that case, I need to tell you something."
"About Despina or about the Ocean?" Eero was having trouble keeping up with all the strange questions.
"Maybe both? The Ocean has plans for Life and Death that are going to change everything. The threat posed by Xexys will be over shortly. Theo has a cure to wake up the victims of the plague or so the angels say."
"So you're saying that Despina is coming home soon?" Eero asked excitedly. His excitement deflated when Rien's stoic expression didn't change.
"The angels have been using her name a lot according to the spirits," Rien explained. "That's part of the reason why they wanted to ask you about it. She does dream magic, right?"
Eero's heart froze in his chest. Why would Rien ask about that? Everyone knew about his sister's magic; Despina shouted her love of dream magic to anyone who would listen. Despina was Adam Darktide's perfect heir, even though he'd never wanted one.
"Yeah, she inherited it from our father. Why? Is she in trouble? Is she okay?"
Rien inhaled deeply, trying to project a sense of calm for Eero
"The spirits have heard that Theo and Adam are going to be returning to Pleasantview within the next day or so. They will bring the cure needed and wake Pleasantview from the plague. The spirits, they...they are afraid that Despina might not be coming with them. That the Ocean has claimed her for his own purposes. It's speculation, of course, but the spirits are usually extremely reliable. They wanted to prepare you for the worst."
Eero felt like the floor was falling from under him. It was a gut punch he hadn't been expecting, despite knowing all along that his sister had left him alone for a mission she might not come back from.
"Is she going to die? Will I have time to say goodbye to her? Could I write something that Theo or whoever can give to her?"
The spirits whispered among themselves for a moment, splitting from a single voice to countless overlapping voices echoing in unison.
"Prepare for the worst, hope for the best," Rien repeated, once the spirits were in agreement. "They don't think she'll die, but she may not be coming back. It all depends on what plans the Ocean has for her. I'm sorry, but the spirits thought that you deserved to know in order to prepare. Listen for the angels, and maybe you'll hear them too."
Lukas burst into Limbo, teleporting through the realms as fast as possible. There wasn't time to change things, not on the Ocean's schedule. Despina would ascend into the position of Dream Guardian and be sealed away from her home realm soon. How could they change the Ocean's mind? It wasn't fair to seal a mortal from one realm into another one, away from their family and friends. Lukas had seen into her dreams, and saw her wishes. Her heart lay in Strangetown with a prince charming and a cursed coven to heal. She was just like Riley: full of hopes and dreams, only to be taken from the family who loved her. They couldn't let the Darktides lose Despina. History couldn't repeat itself.
There was only one soul in Jubilant Accosts' Limbo. The stress of the transfer to an isolated, desolate realm was taking its toll on that soul, which pleased Lukas.
They grabbed Adam Taisto Darktide roughly, pouring all of their anger towards the soul.
"What did you do?" Lukas demanded. "What did you do to your children? What did you promise them for? Who did you promise them to? Answer me!"
Adam writhed under the deity's grasp, struggling even when it was pointless. There wasn't a single person here to help him, and Adam couldn't win against a god.
"You know what I did," he protested. "I'm sorry! You know that I would take it back if I could!"
"Not good enough!" Lukas shouted, raising the soul off his feet with a single, violent thought. "There's something that I'm missing. Something that you left out. When you sacrificed your children to kill the Grim Reaper, who were you sacrificing them to? Which god? With what spell? Charlotte Maricourt was a Strangetown witch through and through; she wouldn't have prayed to me or Izanami. I'm guessing she was trying to hack into whatever magic took the Lost Queens from the universe, which isn't enough to attack even a reaper with, let alone the Grim Reaper, if the spell actually worked. Did you promise your children to that magic? Tell me!"
Adam glared at the deity, but his soul couldn't endure a fight. He was already exhausted from projecting himself to his daughter, and wasting away in this desolate realm. It was in his best interest to comply with the god, even if his spirit wanted to rebel against them.
"Our plan needed energy strong enough to command Death, and destroy his Grim Reaper," Adam spat, fully aware that he was talking about his plan to murder Lukas' stepson and possibly controlling their husband. If he wasn't already as low as he could get in the grand scheme of the universe, Adam might be afraid of the god punishing him for even speaking of this plan, despite claiming to want to hear it. "The Lost Queens would have been the best option, but we couldn't access that magic. The trail was a literal dead end. Those souls were gone, and absolutely nothing remained of them. So we followed the magic of Death dying instead. All the reapers who vanished or were murdered...they were easier to track. There were trails to follow, magical residue we could try to convert into a weapon against the realm of Death. Magical essence that might help us ascend."
Lukas paused to try to compose themselves after this admission. Adam tried to avoid eye contact as best as he could, while Lukas realized that Adam had tried to use Riley's disappearance to become immortal.
Deep breaths. Deep breaths.
Now it was beginning to come together. Why he had all the names of dead reapers, whispering them to his sister as confession. It was the evidence of what he'd done, the proof of his guilt. He used the names of Alicia Wenlock, Victoria Evans...Riley Lane as totems. Their deaths and the magical remnants of their demise were what he was trying to tap into in order to kill Lukas' stepson. He would have used Riley to come after Izanami if he could manage it.
There was no amount of deep breathing that could help Lukas now. This horrible man had come after their family, using their family, in order to sacrifice his innocent children in exchange for power. If Adam wasn't already dead, and his location made known to the proper afterlife authorities, Lukas was tempted to see just how much Life could make a soul in Death's realm suffer.
"That's not enough!" Lukas shouted, digging their fingernails into the inside of their fists to keep from using magic. Now wasn't the time to vent their feelings about Riley. The Ocean was moving quickly, and Lukas had no time to act on their anger. "I know to mortals that might make a kind of sense, but you can't sacrifice people to what's left behind after a reaper dies. You can use that residue to boost a sacrifice, but you can't just shoot your demands out into the universe. Someone needs to accept your sacrifice."
Adam clutched his chest and leaned against the white void he was trapped in. Physics didn't make much sense in Limbo.
"There was...I can barely remember. I think I forgot all about her until I came back here. One moment I was playing piano, listening to Colby ramble on about his childhood...and the next moment...she was there."
"She?"
"A blonde teenager. I don't remember her name. Carrie, maybe? It was like a dream- maybe it was dream magic. If it was, it so realistic. Her eyes were so clear, so focused on me. She had a question for me, one I can't believe I forgot."
Lukas' heart sank at these words, their suspicions confirmed.
"She asked you for your children, didn't she? Before you made Sebastian, this girl asked you to sacrifice your children to her. You're from Strangetown, hoping to use the Lost Queens' energy for a spell. Are you fucking stupid? No one can be this stupid! What did she promise you in return?"
Adam cringed at the deity's anger, not completely understanding what was happening.
"It's hazy," he replied cautiously. "Like I said, I didn't remember this until after coming back to Jubilant Accosts. It was something to do with blood. Something about making the Darktide bloodline special or something? I thought that she'd make me special, more special than I already was as a dream magic user. Some kind of demigod."
"You've played into his plans," Lukas seethed. "You've ruined everything! The Lost Queens asked for power, to be gods as well as queens, and what did they get? They vanished so powerfully from existence that assholes like you try to channel that energy! They died, and who got their power? Their daughter. You gave your children to a being that was already going to use them for a special purpose. He gave you nothing, just a promise that your bloodline, your children, would be powerful. You got scammed and you deserve it. Your attempts on the Grim Reaper would always be doomed to failure because you had already promised your children to the Ocean without even remembering it. He has the bloodline he wanted, and never had to worry that your little cult would ever succeed. It probably brought him enjoyment to see you try, knowing him. Despina was always supposed to come here. She was always supposed to replace the Dream Guardian who you killed. The Ocean has been planning this revenge scheme for almost two decades, and it's all your fault!"
"What?"
"I have absolutely no way of helping Despina escape this. Your daughter will be punished for your crimes, the Ocean has made that abundantly clear. She will be cut off from her brother and friends, even the aunt who can't stand the reminder of you. You've taken her from her family, to sit in this realm, forever fulfilling the duties of the being you killed. I hope this makes you happy. Your bloodline is indeed powerful, but it comes at the cost of Despina's happiness. Pray that I never reveal to her your part in all of this."
Lukas vanished from sight, leaving Adam alone again in Limbo. All he had left was his thoughts, and the many questions about his own guilt.

"Ginevra."
"Wanda."
The two women stared at each other, trying to establish dominance with nothing but their eyes. Ginevra had been preparing for this day from the moment she was told about Eero Darktide's rare abilities. Wanda's coven wasn't large and even if Eero didn't perform magic, he was still an asset she needed. Ginevra was pretty sure that Wanda wasn't aware of Eero's inheritance from his mother, otherwise she'd be livid instead of just angry that he was gone.
"You can address me by my proper title Madam President," Wanda snapped. "As president, it's up to me to look after the vulnerable members of society. I understand that you've registered Eero as a student here, removing him from my coven. Can I ask why?"
Ginevra's confident smile never wavered.
"I've filled out the appropriate forms and paid the fees," she replied. "Eero is a legal resident of our temple. We can guide him to a more fulfilling adulthood than your coven can. The boy refuses to do magic."
"Yes, of course," Wanda acknowledged, grinding her teeth to keep from shouting. "It was so thoughtful of you to think of what's best for Eero without any discussion. In that spirit, I'm adding a few more guests for you to guide. News is spreading of your little group and people are understandably curious. Malik Bellamy here has decided to follow his friend to your temple with his mother's permission, and Kerstin Karlsson would like to explore your teachings. I'll be sure to send any more volunteers your way if I run across any."
Morcant and his little brother, Prospero, watched their mother nervously. Wanda had been on a tirade all day when she'd learned about Eero's move and neither kid wanted their mother to turn her anger towards them or volunteer them to join this strange demon cult.
"How thoughtful of you to help us grow our numbers," Ginevra said with what she hoped was a smile. Who were these two "volunteers" and what plan did Wanda have for them?
"Well, it's important to support any Arkhelian business, especially if it has ties to Strangetown and demons. Amina Bellamy was so excited when I told her about your existence, and I can't deny the happiness of a Bellamy family member. Malik already knows Eero, so they can adjust to their new home easier together."
Malik grinned at the thought of living with his friend, away from his mother's expectations. He was to spy on this strange place, and for once, his mother had told him to focus on his mission before his studies. Finally, Malik could have a B average and not have his mother berate him for not getting As.
Kerstin looked less sure of herself than the teen. She had applied to Wanda's office for a job upon moving to Arkhelios, and had gotten a strange reply. Wanda didn't need a secretary or manager, and Kerstin hadn't done well on the introductory magic test to join the coven. She was just about to ask Roman if he needed anyone to help with his restaurant when she received the notice about Eero's transfer. After reading that, Kerstin's purpose became clear.
Ginevra had probably already guessed that the two new recruits were spies, but there wasn't anything she could do about it. Rejecting new members when their population was already low would send the wrong message to Arkhelios and make them look snobbish and insincere.
This was just the start of Wanda's plans for Ginevra's little scheme. Depending on the information relayed to her by her spies, Wanda had several ideas to defend her coven from poachers, and her friend, Winter, had even more.
"Perhaps you could do the same, and let me know if there is anyone interested in joining the Arkhelios coven," Wanda continued. "With all the uncertainty in Pleasantview, Arkhelios needs a strong defense against Xexys. If Theo's mission fails and he can't protect our realm from the dream plague, then we must prepare for the worst."
"Of course," Ginevra agreed, smiling insincerely. "And we will be right by the coven's side if the danger spreads to Arkhelios. We serve the Life deity and protect the natural order of things. We're fighting on the same side, Wanda."
"Of course," Wanda echoed cheerfully, as if she didn't want to hex Ginevra until all of Wanda's stolen ideas and poached people returned to her.
Eero perked up when he heard Wanda's voice echoing through the hallway. She sounded pissed, just as Eero had assumed she'd be when his absence was discovered. Finally, someone was here to fight for him. Someone who actually wanted him. It felt nice to be missed by someone, even if it was only to keep the numbers of Wanda's coven up. Truthfully, after spending a day with Ginevra, Eero was beginning to understand why her program was the better choice for him overall, but he still felt bad about leaving Wanda when she had been so kind to him.
"Eero! Look at you!"
Eero was blindsided by Wanda's hug. The witch was smiling, which was something Eero hadn't been prepared for.
"Hi Wanda. I'm sorry that I didn't get a chance to say goodbye," the teen apologized. "It was all really sudden and there was this demon and I didn't want to make her angry by leaving a note."
"Don't you worry about that," Wanda assured the teen. "You didn't have much choice in the matter. It would be impossible for someone who doesn't practice magic to put up much of a fight against a demon. The demons aren't hurting you here, right? You can tell me if they are. I have a friend who can easily get you out of here if need be."
Eero shook his head quickly. The last thing he needed was a witch or warlock breaking down the door to the temple and inciting violence on his account.
"No, they've been pretty nice so far," he replied. "The food is good and my bed is comfortable. Everyone acts like they're surprised to see someone like me here, so I'm getting special treatment. Apparently, Imogen Muir was a big deal to demons or something and I guess that I take after her."
Wanda watched the teen carefully. He didn't look like he was lying. So that was the reason Ginevra wanted him so badly. He took after his mother...but in what way? Winter didn't have the slightest clue of what made Imogen noteworthy, aside from being in a cult. She appeared to be a witch, plain and simple. Adam Darktide was the interesting parent of Eero, at least to the coven. He had nearly mastered dream magic and had plenty of strength to defend himself. Eero had nothing of his father's magic, just like Sebastian.
Eero was a blunt child who didn't have time for niceties, so Wanda just blurted out the question she'd been dying to ask him.
"Eero, what did they say was unique about your mother? No one has told me anything about Imogen, not even your sister. I'm not sure why the demons respect her. Did she have demonic heritage? Did she also have a rare talent like dream magic?"
Eero nodded, looking conflicted. Wanda had been nothing but understanding to him, but did she understand what she was asking? Would it be safer for her to not know about Imogen and avoid fighting with the temple about angels? What happened if one of the surviving angels came after Eero and Wanda was caught in the crossfire? Arkhelios needed their president alive and well, but Wanda also deserved to know what was happening.
"My...Imogen was descended from an angel," Eero replied. "That's what the demon told me anyway. I have that gene too, apparently. I don't really know what that means."
Wanda struggled to remember anything she'd ever learned about angels. They weren't exactly common, and they didn't ever grace the living world with their presence unless the situation was dire. Winter might know about them, as she was quite a bit older than Wanda, but had anyone living seen one before?
"How curious. I've never heard of angels walking among us. If they are the beings that demons evolved from, they must be very powerful."
"I guess."
"Eero! There you are! I'm joining your cult so we can hang out together! Mom said it was okay since I'm 'not much of a warlock anyway'."
Eero was caught off guard when his friend launched himself in Eero's direction, hugging him until it was difficult to breathe.
Wanda smiled as Eero tried to remove himself from Malik's arms.
"Now this makes everything to get Malik here worth it," she laughed. "I'm glad you two are together again. It can get lonely without your friends, especially in a place like this."
"If Malik's here, I'm sure that I'll be fine," Eero teased, freeing himself from his friend. "It'll be nice to have someone normal here among the angels and demons. You are normal, right? You're not secretly some nearly extinct species like me?"
Malik gave his friend a confused look, confirming Eero's suspicions. His friend wasn't here for the same reason that he was. From the way that Wanda kept her gaze on Malik, Eero could only assume that that meant he was here to spy for her.
"Are you a demon?" Malik asked curiously. "All the time that I've known you, I've never picked up on demon vibes from you. Despina would have said something if you guys were demons. If you were, she'd probably be trying to apprentice under the sovereign right now."
"I'll leave you kids to catch up," Wanda announced. "I'm sure that you have a lot to talk about. Just remember, Eero, that I can be here in an instant if you need me. They may have all the right forms to get you here, but I'm the president. I can do whatever I want."
With a wink, Wanda vanished down the hallway to the main doors. She didn't stop to find Ginevra once more. There wasn't time to bicker with her; the word "angel" kept dancing through her mind, taunting her for her lack of knowledge. She didn't know much about angels, but Winter would.
"Mr. Fromm? Do you mind if I bother you for a moment? This building is a little disorienting, truth be told."
Kerstin flagged down what appeared to be the only sane soul in Arkhelios as he left the small office he was working out of. To her relief, the man stopped and held out his hand in greeting.
"It does take a while to get used to," he agreed. "I'm afraid that you have me at a disadvantage. You seem to know my name and I don't know yours."
Kerstin smiled politely, shaking the hand offered to her.
"It's Kerstin. President Bellamy briefed us quickly on the residents of this temple, but not much else. Forgive me for saying this, but you seem to be the most normal person here."
Leofric couldn't help but laugh at that description. He'd had similar thoughts when he first agreed to help Shadowvale take in students outside of Jubilant Accosts.
"Strangetown takes a bit longer to get used to, I find," he replied. "Arkhelios at least wants to be a modern nation leading the world someday, while Strangetown residents are happy to live as they did a millenia ago and worship gods most countries haven't even heard of. Arkhelios seems to be a demon magnet, so I hope that you're comfortable with them."
Kerstin nodded.
"I've noticed that. Wanda said that her nephew's son is a powerful demon and that the family has some demonic heritage. I'm supposed to keep an eye on this temple, as well as some other family that might be demonic. Could you give me a hint of what to look for? Wanda didn't exactly give us an idea of what demons look like."
"Hmmm. Strange coloured eyes I think are the easiest thing to spot on a demon trying to pass itself off as human. Gold, red, purple, and black are the main colours, though black can also indicate an alien ancestry, like my own. There's a hierarchy in their society based on the various eyes colours, though I have no idea of what that is. I'd wager that gold is the highest since most of the demonic students Shadowvale takes in seem to have gold eyes. Horns are a pretty obvious giveaway, but only when a demon allows you to see them. Most adult demons can control their dark form, so they can choose to hide their horns from you."
"I see." Kerstin paused to sort through the mental images she had of the staff that ran this temple. There were two gold eyed demons working for the temple who were probably mother and son. That Ginevra woman was married to the woman and was likely the mother of that demon boy as well. Ginevra didn't seem to match any of Leofric's descriptions though. "Is Ginevra a demon too? She looks very human to me."
"It's complicated," Leofric sighed. "I'm sure that the other family you've been asked to watch is the Rivales family. I've never gotten a clear answer when I asked about her and the rest of the Rivales. There's demon somewhere in their family and maybe something else. It's suspicious that they aren't open about their heritage in a country as open as Arkhelios is to demons, especially after Theo Bellamy has changed so many minds here about the demonic. I'd suggest that you keep an eye on Ginevra and see what you can find out. She has secrets that she won't give up easily, but maybe she'll slip up while you're here."
"This is going to be great. I'm finally away from my mom and I get to hang out with you all the time," Malik exclaimed. "This is the greatest thing to happen since we moved to Arkhelios."
"Yeah, it's going to be fun, as long as this place doesn't really turn out to be some kind of cult," Eero replied warily. "Someone knows something about me and my bio family, and I'm not convinced that this attention is going to be a good thing."
Malik shot his friend a doubtful look.
"Ro, all of Arkhelios is some kind of cult. You can't throw a stone without hitting some cult's headquarters. You should really get out of here when you're eighteen and see just how messed up this place is compared to some other countries."
"Malik, my parents were in an actual cult in Strangetown, remember? Cults can happen anywhere."
"Or maybe you're just some kind of cult magnet," Malik laughed. "Wherever you go, you're doomed to stumble on at least one cult. Since you've been stuck in Arkhelios, they're just starting to multiply here."
"Funny, Malik. Just hilarious."
Eero considered throwing the nearest item at his friend, but he reconsidered when he remembered how worldly and experienced Malik hinted he was.
"Hey, have you ever heard of an angel?" he asked. "Not like the stupid things on like Love Day cards, but like, real, supernatural beings."
"Not really. I guess they'd have to be real though if demons are real, right? They're like the opposite of angels."
Eero shook his head.
"Not according to Despina. She said they were what demons evolved from, I think. It's hard to remember what she said, since she's talked about so many things, but I think-"
"Well, Despina's usually right," Malik conceded. "Why? Are angels part of this cult? I don't think my mother's warned me about those. Demons, yes, but not angels. Do you think they're dangerous?"
"I don't know. I wish Despina were here to talk to. Nothing has made sense since she's left."
"Is...is that the weird magic you were using the other day?" Malik asked cautiously. "Leah and I haven't seen anything like that before. Even her dad didn't recognize it when we described it to him. It's not demonic magic, so what is it?"
Eero froze, terrified to answer the question. Of course his friends had seen the strange magic that had burst from him when they last hung out. He was desperately praying they hadn't, but clearly they had.. Leah's father was Leo Toyonaga, the head of this temple. Was that how Ginevra had found him?
"I don't know, maybe," he said. "I guess that's what I'm here to learn about. I don't know anything about my parents, but that doesn't stop genetics. Would you be afraid of me if I was an angel?"
To Eero's relief, Malik burst out laughing at the question.
"Despina, sure, but you? Wanda had to help you escape during a fire drill. You broke up with Aatu because you were getting too close to him and that freaked you out. You're hardly someone I'd worry about no matter what your parents were."
"Thanks," Eero replied, a flash of irritation crossing his face. "That means a lot. And it was a mutual decision with Aatu."
"Ro, you're the most stable person I know. The most repressed too. We're going to be living here together, so we have tons of time to figure things out. Just try to relax, okay? You'd still be my friend even if you suddenly turned into a plantsim, so don't even worry about angels. Dealing with weird shit is like the Bellamy family business. Do you know that my mom hears voices in her head that tell her how to gamble to win big money? Trust me, your family's practically normal compared to mine. My mom did dump me here to suck up to President Bellamy after all. If you suddenly sprouted angel wings right now, it wouldn't phase me at all."
Eero smiled at his friend. Honestly, he wasn't sure who would win in a contest for craziest family, but it was nice to momentarily think that it wouldn't be him.
"Thanks, Malik. I don't know what's going to happen, but I'm glad that you're here to help."
"You should have seen her face! She knows it's a trap we've set, but she still had to take our volunteers anyway!"
Wanda snickered like a teenager who had just snuck out of the house for the first time. Her friend, Winter, smiled approvingly.
"And that's just step one in our plan. She won't be able to trust anyone who comes through the doors by the time we're done with her."
"Well, I'll leave that part for you to work on," Wanda sighed. "I have a country to run, so you'll get to have fun with Ginevra while I sit in meetings all day. I won't be able to see you tomorrow either. Hunter's not happy about how much time I'm away from him and the boys. I promised him that we'd have a family dinner together tomorrow...but Wednesday I should be free to have a few drinks and curse Ginevra."
"That sounds like a date."
Wanda paused for a moment to collect her thoughts. She was still excited about her minor victory over Ginevra, but she'd also learned something new that night as well. Something possibly relevant to whatever game Ginevra was playing with her temple. Winter had been a wealth of information already and was responsible for at least half of Wanda's political ideas. She was quite a bit older than Wanda and had seen more of the world so maybe she'd have an answer to Wanda's sudden questions about angels.
"Winter, have you ever seen an angel before? Are they actually real or just something that no one really sees anymore?"
Wanda was surprised to see confusion on her friend's face. Honestly, she felt like there wasn't anything Winter didn't know about.
"I've never met one. I don't think that I've even read about one that was credibly sighted. Why?"
Something held Wanda from disclosing Eero's cryptic angel talk. The teen was already going through enough turmoil in his life; she didn't need to concern Winter with something that might not even be true. Eero was told this information by a demon who was colluding with Ginevra for some unknown reason. It might just be an elaborate lie to confuse the teen.
"Never mind. Just a weird thought I had. It's nothing."
No So Simstober #21 Float
Arkhelios Adventures
Eero Darktide slammed his drumstick harder than he intended. He wasn't stressed or angry, or so he told himself. The letter that had arrived on his desk in a shower of magical sparkles wasn't a big deal. It was fine. Everything was fine.
Eero lived under the care of the Arkhelios government and fledgling Arkhelios coven with several other students. Charity cases, as people whispered. Sad orphans with no one else to take them in. Unimportant enough to have been dumped on Arkhelios' shores when Strangetown sensed an opportunity to make cutbacks in their budget. It hadn't been so bad before Despina had left for Pleasantview. They'd always had each other, just like the relationship between their father and aunt...until it had imploded along with their coven.
It was a mistake to think about his family, as broken as it was. It only reminded him of the letter.
Dear Eero, by the time you read this, I'll be gone. I know you don't agree with me about our parents, but I have to know about them. I have to.
The drumstick hurled itself against the wall before Eero could even register it happening. His twin sister, the only one he could depend on since they were kids, had just left him an impersonal letter before sneaking into a doomed realm, chasing answers about people who hadn't given a damn about them. Despina wasn't even trained for this suicide mission their cousin had accepted. She always thought that she knew better than everyone, but this was different. This was dangerous. Not only dangerous, but pointless. Their parents hadn't loved them, no matter what Despina claimed a ghost was telling her. His sister was going to die in a strange realm without even saying goodbye to him. Why hadn't she just talked to him about her plan? They could have figured out something together. She could try a magical solution and he could try a scientific one. She didn't have to leave him alone like this.
Eero dropped the remaining drumstick before he snapped it in half. Clearly, he was too upset to take his frustrations out on a drumkit. Something sturdier was needed.
The backyard was state of the art. Wanda Bellamy had spared no expense when designing it. There was brand new sports equipment, a large pool, and gardens that depended on magic to survive the harsh Arkhelian sun. Eero grabbed a basketball and whipped it at the net. This was a game that he could play on his own, so he'd better get used to it. It wasn't like his cousins or aunt were going to stop by anytime. As far as he knew, Duke Goldman had taken Elowen and Bronwen out of school and kept them isolated from their friends to limit their potential exposure to the dream illness. Remy was basically in a coma, Adam was in another realm, and his aunt was somewhere that sounded like a magical prison hospital when President Bellamy had tried to explain it to him. Despina was gone and that shy boy from Jubilant Accosts was....no! Eero refused to even think about him. Not after the letter.
The ball bounced back into his hands and Eero channeled all of his anger into throwing it as hard as he could in the direction of the net. It didn't even matter if it went through the hoop. As long as it hit something.
Mom is from Jubilant Accosts. I may never get the chance to find her family ever again if I don't go now. I want to see what she looked like. I want to see where she lived. If there's any chance that I can-
No.
White hot current ran through his body. He wanted to hurl the ball into one of the expensive glass windows of the building until glass rained down around him like confetti.
Their mother? Who cared about what their mother had looked like? Despina has always been sensitive about her appearance growing up, and longed to see where in the family her light blue skin colour had come from. Since they had seen pictures of their father, Despina had always assumed that their mother had been blue like her. When her research in Pleasantview revealed that Imogen Muir wasn't blue, Despina had latched onto another theory.
Muir. Eero hated that he knew his mother's last name. He would prefer not to know a single thing about the woman who had given him life only to try to snatch it from him days later. He hated knowing his father's last name just as much, but at least there were other Darktides to hide among. There was no way that he was going to use Muir to honour a woman he hated. Neither of his choices for a last name were any good. No, one day, when he got married, he would take his spouse's name and be done with being a Darktide. It was the easiest way to choose a name without the baggage of his family dragging him down.
"Hi everyone! We're late, but we're here!" Thea Davis announced. The boy beside her rolled his eyes, embarrassed to be seen with his mother.
"Mom! I think they know, we knocked on the door and you're shouting at the top of your lungs. They know we're here."
Malik Bellamy pushed past his mother, looking for his friend. He could see Eero entering the house from the backyard, grinning to see him.
In a puff of smoke, Leah Toyonaga materialized in the hallway, cutting off Malik's view of Eero.
"Eero! Thanks for inviting me to hang out. Since Lukas left for whatever mission they're on, my dad and sister have been going nuts. Every ten minutes, someone calls or Uncle Gee shows up or Great-Uncle Charley sends a representative to talk. It's been crazy. Thank god Lukas never picked me to be their stupid champion. It's not like Lukas ever pays them for all this stress."
Eero hugged his friend.
"Do they know how Lukas is doing? Are they okay? Have they met anyone from here? There hasn't been any deaths they'd reported, is there?"
Eero held his breath as Leah gave him a strange look.
"Since when do you care some other realm? I thought magic was your sister's thing, not yours."
Eero's voice caught in his throat. Of course, magic was his sister's thing-that was why he had to hope that Lukas found her and could either protect her or send her home. He didn't feel like explaining what Despina had done to his friends though. They didn't need to worry about him or Despina. Eero had spent a lifetime taking care of himself and he knew what he was doing.
"Eero's just hoping that Jubilant Accosts will be safe to travel to so he can find someone new to sleep with," Malik teased. "He's got too many exes and broken hearts here."
Leah snickered as Eero blushed. The topic of Jubilant Accosts vanished when Eero could be teased for something more scandalous.
"That's not fair," Eero replied, faking a small laugh. "Aatu and I are just better as friends. He's seen other guys since we broke up and so have I. Some girls too, which doubles my dating pool. I don't need to go to some broken realm to get laid."
"Even still, I worry about you, 'Ro. You've been off lately. If it isn't about Aatu, what's going on?"
Eero smiled weakly, hoping to avoid the subject of his true feelings. Unfortunately for him, his friends knew Eero better than that.
"Let's go hang out in my room," he suggested. "I don't want to talk about anything where the adults will hear us."
Because of the small population in the Arkhelios coven's sponsored orphanage, Eero's room was fairly large. It could easily fit more people in it, should the coven expand as Wanda hoped.
"Sweet! The violin is still here from last time!" Leah gasped. "They really don't care if you keep it in your room? I thought it belonged to the school."
Eero shrugged.
"There's no one else here who wants to use it, otherwise I'm sure they'd care. President Bellamy wants the coven to be state of the art, so its school needs to be as well."
"And how are you doing being raised by witches when you can't even use magic to light a candle? Aren't you failing if you can't do magic?"
"Remy is failing on purpose, yet she's welcome in the coven," Leah pointed out, picking up the violin.
"Remy is faking it," Malik pointed out. "Eero has the magical ability of a rock. He failed the Pleasantview Academy entrance exam spectacularly. The last thing he needs is a reminder of something he can't even do. President Bellamy wouldn't force him to study magic if he can't do it. She's not a monster."
Eero winced at his friend's words. Malik wasn't wrong with his evaluation, but he could have at least used some more tact. The looks the witches and warlocks had given him after he'd failed their test were cruel, even if they weren't trying to be. Standing next to Despina who was beaming with pride hadn't helped much either. He hadn't wanted to be accepted to the academy like Despina did, and maybe he'd purposely answered the questions he did know wrong, but it still stung to be the untalented one in his family. The unwanted orphan of terrorists with delusional plans. The cousin of Adam, who seemingly couldn't stop having weird magical episodes that impressed the adults as much as it scared them. Despina's twin brother, who wasn't dating a prince or running off to dangerous places. The disappointment.
"Gee, thanks, Malik," Eero replied. "You don't see me pointing out that you can barely do math with a calculator in front of you or that you have no idea how to read a tarot deck without sticky notes on the cards. Your mom is just as disappointed in you as mine would be if she wasn't dead."
Malik grimaced at the thought of his mother. Thea was fine enough with her expectations, but his other mother was relentless with her demand for him to be a "proper Bellamy." He was just as terrible at reading cards as Eero had said, and he'd never once heard the sea of voices that supposedly spoke to the Bellamy family.
"Maybe I would be better off as an orphan," Malik mused. "If my mom was dead and I can't hear the voices of the spirits, then she'd have to wait for me to die to scream at me for failing her."
Malik rolled his eyes at Leah's comment.
"Tacky, Mal. Eero didn't choose to be an orphan and they just put his former guardian in wizard jail or something. Us having parents is a blessing, not something we regret."
"Maybe your parents are a blessing. My moms only see me as a way to carry on their legacy."
"Having no one around that cares about you has its advantages," Eero agreed. Leah put down the violin just long enough to smack her friend on the head.
"You have people who care for you. Me and Malik care, and your cousins care. Despina cares a lot about you, and I'm sure that even Aatu still cares about you. I think he still has feelings for you."
"My cousins don't care about me," Eero replied, rolling his eyes at the thought. "They feel bad for me, that's all. I appreciate you guys, you know that, but you're not an adult or a parent. Someone who will look out for me."
"And Despina? Did you guys have a fight? Are you guys even capable of fighting? I thought you two had a weird twin connection that made you think the same."
Eero laughed at Malik's assumption. He couldn't be more wrong about the Darktide twins.
"I don't think that Despina and I have agreed on anything since we were kids," he laughed. The laugh came out more bitter than he'd expected. "My little sister-well, we always joke that she's my little sister, but we really don't know who's older because it's not like our shitty parents bothered to register our birth or see a doctor. We just assume I'm older because I'm the responsible one. I'm not the one chasing after ghosts and magic and fantasies. Despina thinks the best of people, including our parents. She has hope that magic will save us, even when I know things are hopeless. She's everything our parents aren't, that I can't be. We disagree about a lot of things these days."
"Damn, Eero, your mommy and daddy issues are bad today!" Malik laughed. "Let your sister pursue what she wants. All magic isn't bad. My mom would be thrilled if I could do anything like the Pleasantview witches as long as it didn't interfere with my 'studies'. Maybe if I knew some magic, she'd get off my back a little."
"I could teach you the birth control spell," Leah teased. "But seriously, come to the Crystal Cove coven some weekend with me. Eero, too. My dad practically runs it, and he teaches easy introduction spells some weekends. He got rejected from the Pleasantview coven when he was our age for having a learning disability, and he does everything he can to remind them what they missed out on. I'm sure that even Eero could pull off a spell or two if he tried."
"That's okay. Thanks for the invite, Leah, but I don't need any magic. I've taken the universe's hint and given up on trying to learn it."
Thankfully, both of Eero's friends seemed pacified by this statement and began another conversation about the resources that were poured into the building. Eero drowned them out easily.
Everyone knew that Remy purposely hid her true magical talent. Failing tests, underachieving and failing to even open her textbooks broadcasted that she didn't put any effort into a skill she clearly had. Everyone knew that she could be a strong witch if she put the effort in. But Eero? He'd learned long ago that it was all or nothing when crafting a lie. People knew with conviction that Eero was a powerless failure. That his parents had given all of their magical abilities to his sister. It was strange that a family with such strong, powerful magic users could produce a son barely able to light a candle with magic. It was strange, but believable. Remy gave too much away. She got excited to use magic in her schemes, revealing what she was capable of. Eero never once used magic even when Despina had pleaded with him to try. The key to a good lie was consistency.
Theo and Adam are going to stop the dream plague from Xexys and I'm going to help them. I can use dream magic like Dad, and I can use it to keep our cousin safe. Don't worry about me. I know you will anyway, but you don't have to. I promise I'll come back soon and with tons of stories about our family. I'll take pictures of werewolves and dream demons for you since they're something we've never really seen before in Arkhelios. They sound so cool that I know even you will be impressed by them.
Eero's right arm twitched subconsciously. The limb felt like it had fallen asleep. It was possible that Eero had been leaning on it weirdly, but he'd been lying on his back. He tried to shove down the memory of his sister's words, but it was a struggle. Despina belonged in Strangetown with her love of the occult and the supernatural. She chased after werewolves and demons like it was nothing. Eero had nothing against supernatural beings, but he wasn't exactly about to make an effort to meet one.
Pain pulsed through Eero's arm. At least it wasn't asleep anymore. Pain he could deal with.
"Let's go to the music room," Eero said suddenly, rubbing his sore arm. "It's boring here. Leah shouldn't be the only one playing an instrument. Let's do something."
Leah and Malik shared a look but didn't complain. Eero was definitely hiding something from them, but they could wait for him to share whatever it was with them. Getting a secret from him any other way would be nearly impossible. He was stubborn, but he was also their friend.
The music room was a sanctuary for Eero. He didn't play violin or any stringed instruments like Leah or play piano like his cousin Adam, but he still liked to unwind by singing or playing the drums. No one really complained when he sang, so Eero guessed that he might be good at it. He had picked up a guitar for music class, but Malik was better than he had ever been. Singing gave Eero an outlet, especially if he could scream with his favourite artists on furious songs. It was something he liked to do in private, unlike taking his frustrations out on the communal drum kit. Leah refused to play anything that wasn't pop anyway, so he didn't have many chances to sing angry songs with his friends.
"Oh, Thea, how are you? If you're looking for my wife, she's not here. Pleasantview elected her to lead the coven temporarily due to Master Maricourt's sudden illness."
Arthur Toyonaga smiled politely at the woman before him. Thea Davis and the other major Bellamy family in Arkhelios kept to themselves mostly. Malik was a frequent visitor of Eero's, which Arthur didn't mind. His mothers were another story. Any Bellamy made his and Alicia's lives miserable, especially Roman Bellamy, and Thea Davis had been rumoured to be a servant of Dorhack long ago. If Arthur never heard the name Dorhack again, he would die a happy man.
"Oh, I wasn't looking for Master Maricourt-Toyonaga," Thea replied. "We've all been watching the news, and she appears quite frequently on it with updates. The coven is lucky to have her. No, Malik wanted to cheer his friend up, so I thought that I'd tag along. It's been some time since I've been to the coven/social outreach center. Wanda's done such a great job with this place. It looks expensive."
"It is," Arthur confirmed. "It's worth it though. The coven will grow in time and it needs to look like it should be respected. The Strangetown coven was destroyed, and the Crystal Cove coven is a joke. The only coven worth competing with is Pleasantview's and they have centuries of money and tradition behind them. Maybe we won't surpass them in this lifetime, but it's a good start."
"It's a shame that Theodosius isn't a member here. With all that power born to two Arkhelian boys, Arkhelios deserves to have his skill in its coven. Pleasantview has plenty of strong warlocks without him."
"I'm sure they do," he assured her. "But Theo has sworn an oath he can't break. He is first and foremost a student of Pleasantview no matter where he was born."
Arthur fought the urge to roll his eyes like a teenager. Fortunately for him, growing up as a prince of Strangetown helped keep his face uninterested.
"Does President Bellamy know about the competition brewing for her coven?" Thea asked. "Ginevra and her wife have that funny building down the street from the old Rivales factories and rumour is that they're looking to branch out."
"Branch out from what?" Arthur asked, looking confused. He knew the building in question, but the drama in Pleasantview had dominated his family's focus as of late. He knew that Ginevra was part of the Rivales family and that she'd married a gold eyed demon with money, but aside from that, no one seemed to pay any attention to her.
Arthur wasn't sure where his wife preferred the little hybrid to be. Her first loyalty was to Pleasantview, but she had also put hard work into establishing a coven in Arkhelios. He suspected that she would continue to support Theo's membership in the coven she truly loved.
"Uh huh. Well, I'll be sure to speak with my wife about it when I see her next," Arthur said diplomatically. "I'm sure that we can all peacefully coexist here in Arkhelios. Leah's father is my cousin, after all. Leo would never do anything that would hurt anyone intentionally."
"Of course," Thea conceded. "It's just something that I've been keeping an eye on. It never hurts to be suspicious of new things in this place. Arkhelios has developed a well-earned reputation for demonic activities after all."
"From their little witchy cult," Thea answered, looking thrilled to be sharing this gossip with someone new. "They have the place packed with crystals, so Crystal Cove has to be a part of this scheme too. Some kind of financial backer maybe? They're said to worship the One Who Watches in all of his many forms. Lukas' champions run the same exact styled building in Crystal Cove. That girl my son is friends with is the daughter of Life's champion and has no doubt been asked to spy for her parents. My wife and I share some concerns about her friendship with Malik, but you know teens. The instant you tell him to stay away is the instant that he's glued to her side."
Arthur smiled tightly. The last thing he wanted was to discuss demons, especially with this woman.
"Of course."
I have to tell you something, Eero and you have to promise not to get mad.
The microphone in Eero's hand felt like it was on fire. The instant Eero felt calm, singing and laughing with his friends, Despina's words rose unbidden to his mind. The feeling of fire returned to his hand once more.
Dad made me promise not to tell anyone until I absolutely had to. Do you remember meeting Sebastian Wall at my school when you came? I don't know if you two met or not, but he's our half-brother. Pleasantview's royal assassin, Coby Wall, wanted to control dream magic for himself, but the closest he could come to that was by controlling a child who could do it for him. Dad made Sebastian with him, even though he felt really bad about it.
The pain searing through his arm felt white hot, as intense as the sun. Eero nearly dropped the microphone in his hand as he doubled over in pain.
"I'm not Adam Darktide's son," he groaned through gritted teeth. "I'm not related to...to Imogen Muir. I don't have a brother, just a twin sister."
Sebastian can't use dream magic, though, so Coby's plan....
...Sebastian has the dream plague. His father incubated the disease in him and....
...Dad says that you don't have the gene, otherwise he'd try to contact you. You could still try....I know you feel like Remy when it comes to magic, but you have a gift you shouldn't waste, even if you don't want to admit to having it. I could help you connect with Dad. We could be a real family again if you weren't so stubborn. It's everything I've always wanted for us.
"Despina, you're just like them," he whispered under his breath. It felt like a release to say the words out loud, but he didn't want his friends to think that he had lost his mind. Already, Leah and Malik had stopped playing and were giving him concerned looks. "You chose magic over your family."
A fire raged in his chest, consuming every breath he tried to take. Adam Darktide had another son. He had made that son as a weapon, just as he'd made Eero as a sacrifice. His children were disposable to him and Despina was deluding herself if she thought any differently about him. They didn't have a family. Their aunt hated them, their cousins pitied them, and Eero refused to believe that this Sebastian could be anything like him or Despina. It had always been just the two of them, but now Despina was gone too. After so long, their parents had finally returned to claim their daughter's life.
Dad loves you, even if you never hear him say it while we're alive. You and me and Sebastian are family, and I'm going to save him so that we can spend the rest of our lives together. You always said that you didn't know how to be the son of Adam Darktide, but with whatever I find out in Jubilant Accosts, and with Sebastian's help, I know we can change the way people see our family. I'll redeem our family name and even Aunt Edana will have to treat us better. I'm going to come back and everything will be better; I just know it will.
Red, searing magic exploded out of Eero's hand at the thought of his father. It was wild and out of control, raging like a fire. Every breath was fire. He could feel fire blaze out of every pore in his skin. He was being consumed from the inside out by relentless flames.
"Eero? What's happening?"
"I'm not Adam Darktide's son! I'm nothing like him! I don't care about my mother because she never cared about me! I warned Despina! I warned her and she still left! She left to chase after ghosts who don't give a damn about her! She left me alone!"
After what felt like an eternity, the flames inside Eero died down, cooled by the return of rational thought. The searing magic had vanished from his arm, leaving Eero with two concerned onlookers.
"Eero, do you need us to get help?" Leah asked. She took a step towards him and Eero took two steps back.
"I'm fine. I'm fine. I just need some air," Eero stammered. "Nothing's wrong, I just...I have to go."
Eero burst outside, gasping for air. His throat tightened, knowing that despite his efforts, he'd been found out. Years of repressing the smallest hint of magic and it had taken was Despina's letter to ruin everything. Maybe he could convince Leah and Malik that it wasn't magic that had burst from the dam he'd created in his mind. Maybe they'd believe it was a medical condition or a sign of this so-called dream plague. Anything but magic.
With that, Eero bolted from the room, running as fast as his feet could take him.
His friends had seen him perform magic, even if it was against his will. All the long years of hiding his abilities, of ignoring them in the hopes that they'd go away, was all for nothing. People knew, even if they were his friends.
Eero gasped as the blinding pain returned. Despina's letter burned inside of the pocket that he'd hidden it in, and he threw it on the ground to be rid of it. Another wall within him broke as he imagined his sister writing the damn thing, excited to be joining a suicide mission for the slim possibility of knowing more about two people who cared nothing for her. Why couldn't she see what she was risking? Why had she been determined to follow the same reckless path as their parents? Magic was dangerous. Magic had broken their family before he and Despina had even been born. What possible good could come from learning about the people magic had twisted?
Long repressed magic tore through his body. Cold flames engulfed his hands. Eero could faintly recognize it as hellfire, but it looked wrong even to his untrained eyes. Hellfire was usually orange like a normal flame, but this was green. What magic could mimic a demon's in such a way?
I promise that I'll come back, but until I do and Remy and Sebastian are cured, you're going to have to be the face of the Darktide family. God knows that Aunt Edana is incapable of that at the moment. It may feel like you're alone now without me or our cousins, but I promise that when I come back, you'll be overrun with relatives. Maybe I'll even find some of Mom's family to bring with me. We could have cousins on her side of the family too!
Eero trembled, unable to process what was happening to him or any of his emotions. How did Despina control magic? It was nearly all she talked about before she'd begun fixating on their parents, surely she'd said something about how to control magic at some point. He'd ignored most of the classes the coven taught about magic and after he'd been "caught" lighting a candle with a lighter instead of magic, most of his teachers had pitied him for his lack of magical skill and had given him homework that focused on potion work or calculating the mathematical requirements for spellwork instead of attempting the spell itself.
"You have to clear your mind. I know it's hard, but just listen to my voice. I'm going to guess that this situation is because of what's on that paper over there. Don't look at it. Take a deep breath. That's it. Now do it again. You can do this. This happens sometimes when a warlock is overwhelmed; it's perfectly natural."
Wanda Bellamy watched Eero with kindness. She wasn't the strongest witch, but she had learned a lot during her time leading Arkhelios and had seen many children struggle the way that Eero was. It was rarer for a teen to lose control of themselves, but Wanda had watched the Darktide twins over the years and seen first hand the difference in magical skill between Despina and Eero. The boy was unfamiliar with how magic flowed through a warlock or how emotions could wreck havoc in an environment.
"That's it, you're doing great," Wanda lied, hoping the boy couldn't pick up on her confusion.
"Eero, close your eyes and reach out your hand," she commanded. "You're going to imagine all of your stress, all of the magic you're feeling, withdraw from your body into the palm of your hand. Deep breathe and feel it all leave you. It's all in the palm of your hand. Everything is focused in your hand. Concentrate."
To her relief, Wanda saw menacing, swirling magic begin to pool in the teen's hand just as she'd commanded. If only things had been as easy with Theo.
There was something odd about the magic coming from the boy, something Wanda couldn't put her finger on. It poured out of him in a way that felt like watching Theo when he was younger and had less control over himself. Eero wasn't a demon hybrid, as far as Wanda knew. There were demonic genes in the Darktide family, that much was proven by Adam's reaction to the incident with Theo's magic. Despina had shared a womb with Eero, but Wanda had never seen magic like this from her either. Despina's entrance exam to the Pleasantview Academy was impressive but was still just standard formal magic. She hadn't even been aware of her ability to use dream magic when she took the test.
Wanda wasn't educated in a fancy academy, so she didn't know the names and descriptions of all the types of magic, but even she knew enough that this magic was unfamiliar. Still, it felt close enough to demonic magic that she might be able to help him. How many times had she tried calming demonic magic when Theo was young? The older he got, the less Wanda couldn't help him control himself, but Eero didn't have a demonic curse pulsing through his blood like Theo did.
Wanda cupped Eero's hands with her own. She chanted softly and the energy began to dissolve in the air, like it had never been there. When she felt the last of it vanish, Wanda wrapped the teen in a comforting hug.
"We'll figure this out, Eero. Don't worry, we'll figure this out."
"You did it," she said proudly, releasing him. "Eero, you did magic! Not only that, but you were able to dispose of it with minimal interference. Congratulations! Your sister is going to be over the moon when she hears about this!"
Apparently, that was the wrong thing to say. Without warning, Eero began bawling. Wanda frowned, unsure of what the issue could be. Too many kids had come to see her, wishing that they had the skills to learn magic. It had never occurred to her that Eero's steadfast determination to never touch magic was sincere. She had been convinced that the boy was jealous of his sister and cousins for doing magic he couldn't, so he became vocally opposed to magic to protect his own ego. Apparently, she'd been wrong about his motives. The teen was distraught at the magic that had exploded from him, staring at his hands like they'd betrayed him.
Arkhelios Adventures
"And that's when Adam got this insane crystal dark form! None of us could believe it, but he's shifted into that form at least three times since then. The horns really are made of crystals! We shone some lights through them until Adam got pissed off. He's going to work on researching this dark form with the Crystal Cove coven when he has time. I know one day he's going to try to join their coven, but we took an oath to serve Pleasantview."
Eero tried to smile politely, but his twin sister had been rambling about life at the academy for what felt like hours. As someone with absolutely no interest in magic, this visit was becoming tedious. The least she could do is ask about his own studies.
"They sent Master Alicia Maricourt to Arkhelios when she also swore an oath to Pleasantview. She's still a member of this coven, but she works somewhere completely different," he pointed out. "Maybe Adam can try that route. But enough about magic, what else is new? Are you still flirting with Jasper? The rumour mill says that you're secretly dating to avoid the wrath of his grandfather, the king. Am I talking to a princess already?"
Despina giggled at the idea.
"He's nice and I like him a lot. There's been no dates. We're close friends. Close friends that sometimes like to hang out alone. He'd never seriously date me though. He's a prince and I'm a scholarship student with terrorist parents."
"That's a bit of a deal-breaker," Eero conceded. "If he really cares about you, our parents won't matter. His grandfather loves Aunt Edana after all."
"Are you ready to talk about our parents?" Despina asked softly. "Like I said earlier, I've been learning a lot about them. Travis Maricourt has been lending me some books and-"
"Travis Maricourt has a family," Eero interrupted irritably. "We have nothing to do with him, aside from our parents being in some kind of death cult together. I don't need to talk to him about how we shared a nursery until our parents tried to sacrifice us all. I don't need magic and I don't need to dwell on our parents. Putting up with Aunt Edana is more than enough to deal with!"
"I disagree," Despina countered. "It's good to know where we came from and studying magic is like looking at the fabric of the universe itself. It's beautiful. I think that studying magic is a great way to understand the people we come from. Did you want to borrow some of Travis' books? You can see Mom's shoulder in one of pictures. She didn't have blue skin like I always thought, and she was wearing a green shirt. Maybe her favourite colour was green."
Eero looked sadly at his sister.
"I'm not like you, Des. I'm glad that this makes you happy and brings you some closure, but I can't live in the past. Mom and Dad are the reason I exist and nothing else. I'm looking at getting into a better college than what Arkhelios is building and spending time with my boyfriend. I'm moving forward with my own life and I don't judge you at all. Just maybe leave me out of what you find out about our family unless it's something big, like a high risk of some kind of disease or like Mom was a secret princess or something."
Despina nodded and enveloped Eero in a crushing hug.
"It's a deal," she promised. "I get it, trust me. You don't see what I see when I look at the universe through magic. I have to know everything there is to know about absolutely everything and all of the answers are out there somewhere."
Eero hugged his sister back just as tightly.
"Just be careful not to fall down the same path as our parents did. I can't lose you too."
Eero went home an hour later with a mostly pleased Abe and Roman Bellamy. Theo's grades were excellent in both demonic and blood magic, and his academic foundations of magic grade had been better than last year. There were still areas that Abe was planning to get Theo to focus on, but nothing that hinted at a failing grade.
With Eero returned to Arkhelios, Despina turned to her newest experiment. Adam had brought dream magic to the forefront of the school's attention and Sebastian's dedication to researching it to try and help his people had inspired Despina. Truthfully, Adam struggled to grasp the magic that had been forced upon him, and Sebastian's own efforts weren't very encouraging. When Despina closed her eyes, she could feel the sensation that Adam complained about. She could almost touch the ideas in Sebastian's book. It was in her power to bring them to life where he struggled.
Her father had control over dream magic, so it wasn't impossible that she might have inherited it too. It was a theory she was determined to prove. Falling asleep was the only way of testing it.
When Despina's mind settled, she was standing on the outside of the school in the sunlight. A man stood below her, watching her with interest.
She'd seen that man before, always lurking in the shadows of her vision but never fully realized. Always out of reach, silently watching.
But this was her dream, and according to Sebastian's research, that meant she had control of it...or at least the majority of it if the man following her was who she thought he was. A trained expert in dream magic was nothing she could fight against with her limited knowledge.
"Dad? Is that you?"
The figure turned, showing his face to Despina. Standing before her was the spitting image of every picture she'd ever seen of Adam Darktide.
This was him. Every pang of jealousy she felt hearing about her cousin's conversations with her father vanished from her mind. This was real. She was asleep and her father had come to her. Despina had no idea of what to say or what to feel in that instant. Anger? Hurt? Love? Acceptance? What did you say to the father who had only made you to sacrifice for power?
"Despina."
Adam spoke first, breaking the nervous silence, which Despina was thankful for. She wasn't sure if she had it in her to speak first. Calling out and asking if it was really him was easy; starting a conversation where he would finally speak to her was something else entirely.
"You called me Dad."
"I'm sorry, should I not?" Despina replied worriedly. "I didn't mean to assume that-"
"I don't mind it. If that's what you prefer." Adam wasn't giving Despina much to work with. His responses were short and vague, never giving Despina a clue to his true emotional state.
"It's what I think I prefer," Despina stated. "I've always wanted someone to call Dad, and you're all that I have."
Adam nodded curtly, his face still unreadable.
"You were told about your conception, I assume?" When Despina nodded, her father hung his head in shame.
"I have so many regrets about the last few years of my life. You must know that. I always knew that there would come a day when I would have to answer to you and your brother for my actions. When I think of my parents, all I feel is shame for what I've done to my own children. If I were gifted with time magic, I would change so much."
Despina was quiet for a moment, reflecting on these words. It was everything she'd ever wanted, growing up as an orphan. To hear her father apologize for the way he'd left her life, for all the hurt and anger she felt about why she was brought into the world-it was a feeling that she'd never anticipated feeling. No simple apology could make up for all that he did, but it was a start. Despina could work with that.
"If you did influence time, I'd likely not exist," she said finally. "So, as painful as it's been, i prefer this timeline where I'm here and you can try to explain yourself to me."
"That's fair," Adam agreed. "I do apologize for leaving you with my sister though. If I had any other family, I would have written instructions for you to go with them...if I had believed that our plan would fail. I never expected to die and I hoped that you'd have lived with me after we ascended into power. But I had no family left besides my sister. I understand that Eden is a difficult person, especially after everything I've done that she had to clean up."
"You do call her Eden," Despina mused. "I've heard Master Maricourt call her that sometimes and she usually screams something about you in response."
"Since we were children," her father confirmed, the ghost of a smile flickering on his lips at the thought of happier times. "She never had a nickname for me, but she's always been Eden."
"She's a lot. Like, a lot. Even with her own kids. How did you ever stand her?"
Adam smiled wistfully.
"It sounds like she hasn't changed much," he replied. "She used to go easy on me, but that's changed now after everything. I always found it best to remain silent when she yelled. If you speak, it just gives her ammunition. Eventually, she'll move on when she thinks you understand her position."
"Why haven't you tried to contact me or Eero? I mean, I guess it makes sense that you would warn Aunt Edana, but Adam? He's not your child."
"I know that it must feel disappointing, and I apologize," Adam said. His voice sounded truthfully upset to Despina. "It's difficult to leave or project from the afterlife. I went to your aunt because she's a fully trained adult witch who knew me well enough to believe me. Your cousin I approached because of what is destined for him. Until I met him, I had no hope of ever speaking to you or your brother until you also died, but Despina, I never dreamed that you had inherited my gift for dream magic. It's rare enough for one kid to have it, but two? The odds are astronomical. Your cousin was forced to accept that gift, but you were blessed with it naturally."
"So, because we're meeting like this, I have the same dream magic as you?" Despina asked, excited to hear the confirmation of something she'd long suspected.
"Yes. It's easier to form a connection with you because you've inherited it naturally. My conversations with your aunt and cousin were rather rushed. It's easier to slip past the attention of the reapers when speaking to someone with the gift."
"And Eero has it too? You said it's rare but possible for two of your kids to have it. He'll be excited when I tell him. Or, I'll tell him to be excited. He's not the biggest fan of magic."
A dark look passed over Adam's face at the mention of Eero.
"No, your brother doesn't have the gift," he revealed. "I've tried contacting him like I am with you, but there's nothing to contact. Your cousin is easier to reach than Eero."
That's probably the way Eero would prefer it.
"But you said it's rare for two kids to have it," Despina insisted. "You only have two kids, me and Eero. Did you and mom have more kids that we don't know about? Are you and Mom still together?"
Adam looked at the eager, innocent face of his daughter. She reminded him of himself when he was younger. Back before he was tempted into darker magic. Back before Coby.
"Your mother and I have parted ways," he said gently, trying not to crush that hopefulness in Despina's eyes. "Before our deaths, we had a number of disagreements. I haven't searched for her in the afterlife and have no desire to. Your mother supports what is to come and I...I no longer can."
"You're avoiding my question. Do I have another sibling with the ability to use dream magic? Yes or no?"
"Yes."
Father and daughter stared at each other for an eternity of silence, neither one of them willing to break the silence.
"With Mom?"
"No."
"Despina, this is a dangerous subject," Adam warned. "I've come back to try to prevent something that mustn't happen and you're innocent. You've suffered enough because of me. This is the path that's meant for your cousin. He and I share guilt that we need to atone for and you...you've done nothing to deserve that path. You and your brothers are innocent and I'm going to fix this for you."
"Brothers?"
"Protect Eero if he's unwilling to wield magic. Study hard in school and surpass even me. Leave what will come for your cousin to bear. I hope that I can redeem myself in your eyes once it's done."
"Where is this other brother?" Despina demanded. "I'll protect him too! I'm strong enough! I've proved to the coven how strong I am! Adam's a mess without Theo and I can help him!"
Adam paused at this declaration, seemingly weighing his options.
"Despina, I went somewhere dangerous when I was in college," he began. "It-it wasn't like me to agree to the plan you were born for. Not for who I used to be anyway. My Dad died and I met your mother and my whole life changed. In my grief, I tried new magic and explored a culture that I could never have imagined. What I did there broke me. My sister saw the change, but it was already too late to turn back. Your mother and Coby Wall are dangerous people. Never try to challenge or interfere with Coby if you see him at your school again. He has strength beyond your imagining and plans that must be stopped." He paused, noticing the look on Despina's face. She had the determination of a Darktide in her and that girl wasn't about to be told not to interfere. "If you must involve yourself in this situation, then make sure that Sebastian Wall does not return to Jubilant Accosts. That is part of Coby's plan."
"You want me to kill Theo's boyfriend?" Despina gasped. "I can't kill him; he's been nothing but nice to me. Sebastian's terrified of his father anyway. He's not a part of any plan."
"No one is asking you to kill him. Just keep him away from Jubilant Accosts in whatever way you can. I'd imagine that he's dangerous too, but nothing compared to his father. He'll have been trained in dream magic and have abilities that you will learn in time. If he goes home, Coby's plan will start."
"Sebastian's my brother, isn't he?" Despina asked quietly. "He has dream magic like my mystery brother does, and now that I think about it, he does look a little like you. I can't believe that I didn't see it before. But you and Coby? You dated the most dangerous man you've ever known? Did you love him?"
Adam froze, looking very much like a deer in headlights at the question.
"I....I...."
Despina stared at her father expectantly, never wavering despite his discomfort.
"Why did you leave him there with such a dangerous man? Where does Coby fit in your timeline exactly? Were you cheating on Mom? Was Sebastian an accident or was he part of this plan you keep talking about?"
Adam stared at the stubborn teenager. She was a Darktide through and through. If it wouldn't be taken negatively, he would have told Despina just how much she reminded him of his sister in this moment. Not everything that Edana did was bad or self-centered. She stood up for people and for the truth. She once followed him to his darkest place and begged him to come back with her. When he refused, she tried again even harder. Despina had that fire in her and Adam was glad for it.
"I know that I have no right for you to see me as anything other than the villain in the story of your origins," he began carefully. "Eden is disappointed at what I've become, and your cousin lashed out at me when I warned him of his destiny. You already think the worst of me, so perhaps you can hear this and not react with anger or disappointment. Maybe you deserve to hear the story of your mother and I. The reapers have reduced their efforts to find me, but I know that I don't have the luxury of time. I've been here too long as it is. Perhaps we will meet again and I can tell you about your mother and the life she had in Jubilant Accosts, but there's no time. If I tell you about Sebastian, will you promise to tell no one about it until the time comes for your cousin to act? We cannot risk spooking Coby into changing his plan and our family is well known for our hot headedness. You must let this play out. I know what Coby planned all those years ago and I know how to intervene. Promise me."
"I promise."
"Your mother knew Coby before we met. She shared his vision of conquest and revenge. He is from Pleasantview and is the Royal Assassin bound to serve the ruler of that country. She was from Jubilant Accosts. I do not know how they met. I met her in college and my heart was hers the instant I first saw her. She led me to believe that she felt the same. At first, Coby seemed like a decent guy who was fun to be around. He taught me magic that I had no idea was possible. Then, he'd raise the many plans he had, each of them relying on either the magic I was learning or the dream magic that I'd been studying my entire life. He spoke of kings and wars and the revenge he would take because of them. He is deeply angry at Twikkii Island for reasons I never understood. He created a child there to begin his revenge...and then he wanted another to lead his war."
"Queen Maura? Why-"
"I've never known. He understands the workings of the universe in a way that I'm just now beginning to see in death. There is something hidden and evil in Jubilant Accosts, Despina. Something so dangerous that the realm was sealed away to protect everyone else. There is a demon who walks the same realm as you and I. A demon of nightmares who is already crippling Jubilant Accosts with Coby's assistance. Coby needed someone with our gift to help facilitate the destruction. A soldier to walk beside the demon in a way that Coby cannot."
"Sebastian."
"Yes. Your mother wanted to help Coby desperately, but she didn't have the power he wanted. Only I could give that to him and because of my love for her, I consented to this plan. I have no feelings of affection towards him and the attraction simply wasn't there. I would often think about my family and what they would think of their first grandchild being created in revulsion to lead a war. How much they would hate me. How much they'd despise me. How they would turn me away if they knew what I was doing. I hated myself, but I loved your mother more. I tried following the plan, but once Coby announced that he was pregnant, everything we'd planned suddenly became real. I couldn't sleep. I couldn't breathe. I was going to be the father of a tool for destruction. I begged your mother to return home with me, to leave this nightmare behind us, and she agreed. Coby had his child who could control dreams and I could try to forget what I'd done. I didn't stay long enough to see my child be born. I didn't have any part of choosing his name. I've never tried to reach out to him like I'm doing now with you. The thought of him fills me with self-loathing and anxiety. I left my son with a monster because I couldn't face what I'd done." Adam paused to collect himself before his emotional state accidentally lost the connection to Despina. "I could only agree to sacrifice you and your brother when the coven asked because I'd already done it once before. I'm a coward and a monster and I need to stop Coby from his plans. If I couldn't stop him back then, then I have to do it now. Sebastian's arrival means that it's started."
Despina stared at the man before her, completely overwhelmed by his words. There was so much to unpack and no time to unpack it with her father. The more emotional he was, the more he began to flicker before Despina's eyes. The connection wasn't stable and she didn't have the training to fix it for him. Her brain cycled through a range of emotions from anger to pity to confusion and then right back to anger. It suddenly made sense why Adam had not wanted to admit this to his sister. Even if he had been manipulated by his girlfriend, he'd still made some major mistakes and he seemed to realize just how bad they were.
But she was the only person that he'd confided in. He assumed that she thought he was beyond redemption and confessed to the one person who he couldn't sink any lower with. She had this information and it was up to her to decide how to feel about it. It all sounded accurate to what she'd seen with both her aunt and the books she'd borrowed from Travis, except for one very important thing.
"Sebastian isn't evil or dangerous," Despina said at last. "You're wrong about him. He's in love with Theo and is the biggest magic nerd I've met. He's funny and sweet. He laughs at the stupidest jokes and let me steal his dessert once because mine fell on the floor. I don't think I've even seen him do dream magic once. He'd much rather nerd out about it with Adam, even if Adam refuses to. He's not a soldier for evil and he's my brother. I won't tell Adam or Remy how we're related to him until the right time, but I also won't give up on him, no matter who his father is."
Adam smiled weakly, once again noting how similar his daughter was to her aunt. Edana had survived the worst life could throw at her, and if Despina shared her passion, surely she'd do just as well.
"Sebastian cannot go near the portal that takes him to Jubilant Accosts," Adam replied softly. "He will meet with Xexys and destroy the portal, crashing their realm into ours. From there, he will command the forces of Xexys and Coby Wall against Pleasantview first and then raze Twikkii Island to the ground. He will destroy everything I love because I gave him a son who could help him. He'll even take Strangetown eventually, the place I miss with all my heart. Please don't lock yourself in Pleasantview with the Maricourts while we wait for Coby to strike. See Strangetown one more time for my sake. You were born there just as I was. You belong under the Strangetown sky."
Despina blushed, thinking about another reason why she would love to visit Strangetown. That reason was named Jasper.
"I will. I want to know where I came from," she promised. "Maybe I can help them prepare for Coby. He's only one man and we have several covens of strong magic users to stand against him. We can beat him."
Adam smiled wistfully.
"I hope so. Protect your brothers and cousin, and I will do what I can from here."
In an instant, Despina bolted awake. She hadn't intended to leave, which meant that her father had intervened and sent her away. She was half tempted to take a sleeping potion and chase after him, but that would just be a waste of time. He was dead and gone; this brief meeting defied the laws of Life and Death enough already. She didn't know how to evade reapers or project herself or even how to find her father if he'd actually been alive.
But she was like him. She was also just like her secret brother, even if he struggled more than she did. She had to protect Sebastian. She had to protect Adam from whatever destiny her father believed he had.
And she would.
She was running out of time if her father could be believed. Her mind tried to focus on that fact and not get distracted by the whirlwind of feelings overwhelming her.
Her father had spoken with her. She had an ability even stronger than what her cousin had displayed. She had another brother. That fact was going to take some getting used to. Did he realize the connection between them or had Sebastian's father hidden it from him?
She had so much research to do and no time to begin. She had to understand her parents' histories to understand the opponent she faced and his plans for Sebastian.
It was time to text Travis and get studying. Her family depended on her.
