Kudos to Jeremy Denk on his new memoir, Every Good Boy Does Fine, out today on Random House! In the book, Denk traces his implausible artistic journey and sets out to relay the most meaningful lessons he has received, and to repay the debt of all his teachers. Things I probably should have predicted before they happened: when teaching memory tricks for the line notes of the treble clef (most of you will probably know this as “Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge”), and encouraging the students to make up their own sentence so that they’ll remember it better, first ensure that the Fart Noise King is not in the room.

On the plus side, I’m pretty sure NO ONE in that class is ever going to forget “EVERY GOOD BUTT DOES FARTS” Being yelled loudly and gleefully enough that the gym teacher next door had to ask me what was going on… We’ll call it a win for remembering the note names?

Bonus parent intervention: this occurred the day of the back-to-school barbecue, and Fart Noise Queen Mum had apparently been given a very proud play-by-play of exactly how her son had been “allowed” to exercise his unique imagination in my classroom that morning.
