@hovercraft79 asked for 27. Things you said through a closed door, and my choice of Hackle, Gwen/Algie, or Rosemary & Laura.
This is a bit of Gwen/Algie set in the young Gwen and Algie universe with a touch of young Egbert Helibore. Fair warning that this is angsty/angry rather than fluffy - I’m afraid Gwen and Algie got into an argument and it doesn’t go well. They do patch things up, just not here.
“Gwen? Gwen, wait!” Algie tries to push his way through the crowd.
She turns and is out the door in a flash. He makes his way out into the hallway just in time to see the back of her gown whipping around the corner.
“Gwen!”
He follows her up the stairs, but before he can catch up with her she dashes into her room and slams the door.
“Gwen!” Algie grasps the doorframe with one hand, breathing heavily.
“Go away!”
He leans his forehead against the door and takes a long, shuddering breath. “Will you please let me in?”
“Absolutely not.”
“Can we talk about it at least, then?”
“There is nothing to discuss,” she throws back, in tones so icy he would swear the wood cools under his skin.
“Please, Gwen? I don’t know what’s wrong, but is abundantly clear that something is.”
She wrenches the door open and he nearly falls into her arms.
“If you don’t know, then I suggest you think on it until you do. Good day, sir. I trust you will not importune me further.”
She shuts the door decisively. He presses his back to the wall, blinking furiously, and runs a hand through his beard. With a sigh, he starts to make his way downstairs. He’s just stepped off the last stair when a voice drawls: “Had enough of you, has she, old boy? I always knew you were too common to hold her interest for long.”
“Go to hell, Egbert,” Algie replies viciously. “At least I’ve done something with my life and am not a mere spoiled brat playing at being an adult.”
“How dare you!”
“You’re wasting your time, you know. She’s a woman of taste, you know, and she hates people who puff themselves up. You never had even the ghost of a chance.”
Egbert sputters and Algie takes some grim satisfaction in knowing he has rendered the young man speechless.
“I may be common but at least I am honest,” Algie adds. He sweeps a mocking bow. “Too-da-loo, Your Grace. I trust we will not meet again soon.”
It brings helibore to the yard. Just kidding, we love you miss please don't turn into toads
Now that would be an event I could happily live without.
You may go and resume your existance as a human being.
