“Ege Bamyasi (Turkish for Aegean Okra, which features on the album cover in, of course, a tinned can) is Can’s fourth album, following what is sometimes considered their masterwork, Tago Mago. Released at the end of 1972, it was led the previous year by the single release of Spoon, a big hit in the German charts. You wouldn’t generally associate Can with being a ‘singles band’, and this track is for me the least interesting one on the album. Notable mainly because it features drum machine alongside live drums, and it was Jaki Liebezeit’s drumming that first attracted me to the band. Its super funky. I mean, really funky stuff, not a term you tend to associate with Krautrock. . Pinch sees Damo Suzuki channelling Captain Beefheart and inspiring Mark E Smith in a near-10 minute murkily-progressive darkly-psychedelic funky freakout; the band in perfect jamming harmony with each other: Michael Karoli’s experimental guitar solos rise out of the depths, Holger Czukay’s undulating bass and Irmin Schmidt attacking the keyboards. The latter two musicians’ tutorship under that giant of avant garde and electronic music Karlheinz Stockhausen goes someway to explaining the sheer creativity and envelope-pushing of Can. Swan Sing Swan Song starts out with rippling water a la Grantchester Meadows and sounds like Syd Barrett era Pink Floyd. One More Night is a good example of Suzuki’s vocalising as an instrument, you can’t possibly work out what the heck he’s singing about, but that doesn’t matter, its another sound, part of the mix...” .
