Hello! If we put all of this not-canon stuff aside, do you think Mikami and Light would have a good relationship? I realize this is all dependent on what your definition of a 'good relationship' is, and if you think Light even wants one, but a lot of people like the idea of LxLight because opposites attract or whatever. They match on an intellectual level but they led completely different lives and ended with different personalities. Mikami is also smart to a high degree, but doesn't retain-

-L’s socially awkward ineptness, and Mikami isn’t even half as petulant as L. But the world would be hell if LxLight was the standard for relationships with the whole enemies and violence thing. Anyway, what do you think? (I love hearing you ‘rant’ about your otp, I live for it tbh.

Haha, to be quite honest, I am not actually sure who’d win a contest of social awkwardness between L and Mikami. By official stats L might have a social skill level of 1 and Mikami one of 5, but actually, L is a lot more capable at reading people and responding to them accordingly, so that needs to count for something. His social awkwardness often appears as more of a choice than anything, in my opinion.Mikami meanwhile…. well, he’s adjusted. He comes off perfectly normal. He tries to be perfectly normal in most areas unlike L who literally doesn’t give a shit. But he’s also involuntarily awkward when you get to know him better - which would be the case in a relationship.Between being with L, who would piss you off intentionally, and Mikami, who wouldn’t realize he’s doing it………. I’m not sure what is over all favorable, haha.Mikami is definitely not as petulant though, it’s true. He’s only a self-righteous hypocrite.

BUT ANYWAY. The MikaLightos.

I alluded to some things in the previous ask about the ship, but really, talking about why they’d not be in a relationship post-canon and talking about them being in one is vastly different so this is a good chance to expand.

I think there is a stark difference between them getting together on the basis ‘Light is Kira, Mikami knows’ and them getting together without this knowledge (either because Light isn’t Kira, or only becomes Kira later, or doesn’t tell Teru he is Kira yet, etc) - I’m going to focus on the latter here, because the first one is the one I… kind of consider a lot less likely, for reasons stated in the other ask.

But yeah, I think Teru and Light can make a … decent couple? With the risk of being too subdued for their own good.Of course, it all depends on how exactly they meet because circumstance can make them have very very different bonds, but I’ll just ramble on about what I feel could be general patterns applicable to most situations? Idk. Human relationships have many possibilities in the end.

I think that for Teru to start dating Light, the most realistic thing that’d happen is that he makes an ideal image of him, based on how he thinks they are similar. That’s not really hard considering Light is brilliant, intellectual, clean and morally upright (though not to Teru’s self-sacrificial degree). For Mikami to think that yes, this is totally the person who can understand and relate to his ideals that everyone else rejects is… easy enough?I mean, it’s kind of Light’s think, he walks by people and they instantly think he’s all they want, it’s actually kind of impressive. Mad skills.

It’s funny because whether it’s Teru projecting his image of the ideal God onto Kira or his image of the ideal person onto Light… they’re both pretty similar concepts.

But the thing is, Light isn’t Teru’s ideal person. Light has morals that are far more grey saturated and interests that range outside Teru’s strict moral code (all his disapproval for hacking into NPA data, man). Light bends rules where he can because he knows he can and Teru finds that idea repulsive already.

So there is a discrepancy between the person Teru might think he could fall in love with and the actual person - and I think a huge challenge of their relationship is always making the transition of how Teru views Light relatively smoothly, because it’s very easy for Teru to just nope out at that point.

On the reverse side, Light probably wouldn’t start out taking their relationship, however they ended up in it, seriously. Since, yk, he’s Light and emotional closeness is reserved to family normally. He doesn’t think that he needs emotional bonds, so whatever he’d have with Teru is probably founded on curiosity rather than like… equal standing actual relationshippy business?And for him the challenge is to graduate from that, I guess.And get used to the fact that Teru has some kinda weird beliefs he might never be able to respect, haha.

I feel like a lot of ‘Teru and Light changing their perception of their own emotional need and subsequently entering an actual serious relationship’ is just getting them to a point where either feels it’s too late to back out, haha.

Though I think that is fairly easy because all about them is… rather subtle?

When it comes to how they actually interact in a relationship I mean.

I feel like they’d just spend a long time on a basis where neither has ever actually said ‘I love you’ or anything like it. It’s a very subtle relationship founded on long conversations and a limited amount of touch, rather than great emotional exchanges. A lot of the basis of their relationship is just assumed but never discussed explicitly?

And they’re not generally bad for each other - their interactions, as subdued as they see, go mostly pleasantly. They’re good company, they don’t argue a lot, normally.Light makes jokes, Teru gets awkward about it, Light is amused, either of them is enjoying himself well enough with it. They can sit and read next to each other halfway touching, the kind of couple that learns to be comfortable and content being quite next to each other. Teru maybe even smiles a little at times.

They’re troublesome when it comes to emotional communication and that’s definitely a source of conflict, but in daily life their relationship would probably be not earth-shattering but stable. They can be rather sweet.

I mean, MikaLight is a ship that will probably not get together in most of the worlds where they could meet and break up in another good portion, but when they’re together, they’re definitely alright for each other.… I say this as if they didn’t ruin their careers over each other in most of the AUs I had part in thinking out. They’re not good at being in love, period, haha.
