No one ever does anything to warrant anon hate. Anon hate is the path of the coward. Someone who wants to insult someone else but doesnât want to have to deal with consequence or backlash. If vagueblogging is the equivalent of whispering nasty rumors about someone just beyond the edge of hearing to create insecurity, then anon hate is like scribbling pornographic images of someone you hate on the bathroom wall. And, even then, thatâs giving them more credit and bravery than they deserve.
When I was ten, someone wrote âyouâre a bitchâ in pencil on my desk. It had something to do with me taking the opposing position to them in a debate and winning.
It did make me pretty upset because it was the worst thing anyone had said about me at the time.
Hereâs the thing, Iâm not ten anymore.
Anon hate is pathetic, it is low, and it is sad. Such cowardice worthy only of mockery before deleting it, and then we go on with our lives. Hell, the only reason I havenât gotten rid of mine yet is because Iâm waiting to show it to Starke. Heâs gonna get a good laugh out of it too.
I do run a much bigger blog than this one (which is my personal account) so it started there. Then, they got cocky. The fact that it followed me to my personal blog with hate mail strung across two accounts is what makes this so funny. So, this is either a very dedicated anon or someone who was looking for an excuse to bully and make trouble.
Or both.
I didnât even write what theyâre complaining about, but weâre at seven messages now if I count the one from last night.
Anon hate though only really works when you care about what other random people think. The bully starts from a position believing they themselves matter and their threats matter, even when it comes with no name attached to it. That the insult alone is enough to be âscaryâ. And they hope that if they send in volume, itâll seem like a lot of people are angry.
The problem for them is that if you achieve any kind of popularity, internet hate is a fact of life. The bigger a platform you have, the more likely it is that youâll say something someone else disagrees with.
This being the internet, chances are good theyâll attack you over it.
Itâs a form of bullying that really sucks in the Tumblr environment because most of the younger members of the audience (and some adults) are here because theyâre looking for the acceptance they donât find in their lives outside the internet. Anon hate begins with that premise.
The assumption is that I want to be liked and therefore they have power over me by telling me Iâm terrible, I suck, Iâm dumb, or they want to kill me over something I didnât say about superheroes.
Death threats about that? General, vague, death threats to someone who writes a blog that gives advice on writing violence? Often about painful deaths?
Hilarious.
The irony is just too good.
Iâve just adopted the âany reaction is a good reactionâ mantra.
If Iâve made them angry and they came back to yell at me about it then good for me.
