13: a drunk kiss 

      the surprise hit and to remus, it felt damn near like a TRAIN.  even through the fog of alcohol and the light warmth the party atmosphere brought over him, his feelings came tearing through without hesitation, without pause.   clear as day, the churning feeling grew in his stomach and his mouth felt dry.  

 blinking rapidly, remus knew he was sat silently staring back at mary for far too long– but eventually got himself moving again. hand came up, rubbing at the back of his head as he shifted slightly, letting out a breathy laugh. 

        “shit uh– god, you must be wasted to be kissing me, mary.” 

(   –because who would WANT to kiss you? who in their right mind would look at all the people in this room, and decide YOU?  )

“Huh? Oh no, no of course not, Mary,” James said, his attention being pulled back to her and he gave her a little grin, “You know Quidditch takes a good deal of attention. Or it does for me... want to see something?”

Wearing a smirk, he tugged something out of his robe pocket, holding it for her to see-- a little golden ball. A snitch. “Can’t tell anyone, got that? I knicked it from the Slytherin set.”

Remus went a little pale at that. “I... um...” He wasn’t the one people liked. People liked James and Sirius, and Remus tried to remain... the one that wouldn’t be liked. Relationships, serious ones, didn’t seem like a good idea. Part of the reason he never had snogged anyone in his own house...

And being with a girl... that raised a different level of concerns for him. 

“I, um... Think Peter wanted something, I should... go.”

Her lips are tight, pressing together in case she says something offensive or stupid or most of all hateful. She hadn't meant to yell, honest she hadn't; and when Mary takes a few steps back Marlene almost follows. Almost- Mary's body language says that might not be wise at this exact moment. "A--- love, you're not a freak," her head is shaking and that thick Scottish brogue is damn near gone. Her words slow and quiet.

Marlene wasn't a daft girl, she knew that Mary wasn't one to fawn over boys while the others did. She was vaguely aware how Mary acted towards some of the other girls and that distant look she'd sometimes get in her eyes. But maybe Marlene was as stupid as they come because she never would have thought that Mary would have had that sort of affection toward her. Marlene was nothing special. She was the girl that flirted with boys one minute and snapped at them the next. She was one night stands and excuses. She wasn't the sort of girl you pined for.

And through it all had been Mary. Sweet strong Mary. Always there to pick up the pieces while she complained or cried into her lap. Fingers dragging through hair; comforting or braiding. Drinking in front of the fire into the morning hours.

Maybe it's time she stops denying what's in front of her.

Marlene shakes her head again and takes step forward, hand tentatively reaching out and tucking one of those loose strands of hair behind Mary's ear. "Don't be sorry," whispered and Marlene takes another step, lets her hand rest on the back of Mary's neck and softly touches their foreheads together. "Never be sorry."

Remus blinked and his eyes flicked up at the woman. A small smile crossed his lips-- a small brightening to an otherwise exhausted looking young man.

“Thank you, Mary,” he said lightly with a yawn, a hand covering his mouth before recovering his quill, scratching down notes from a book. “I thought I was the only one still up.”

They were alone in their dorm, everyone else either out enjoying the day outside or on the trip to Hogsmede. Marlene elected to stay behind, she’d been plenty this year and honestly would rather take some time today to spend extra time in the greenhouse. The question from Mary, however, caught her off guard. Marlene was pretty sure Mary knew bloody well how to kiss someone, it wasn’t as if they were back in fourth year or even fifth. Shit, there were third years snogging innocently in the halls and laughing afterwards.

Marlene stared at from across the beds for a moment, blinked a few times and with a smirk that was borderline naughty-- Marlene stood from her bed and crawled onto Mary’s. “How long ya been waitin’ ta ask that one, hm?”

A hand settled on Mary’s knee, the other used fingers to gently brush hair from the other girl’s cheek and Marlene leaned in to press lips to Mary’s. Soft at first, gentle; inhaling deeply before putting a bit more into it, grinning when Marlene pulled back. “Well?”
