Cody held tightly to the jar in his hand as he walked “home” from school. He wasn’t the only child living at the home who went to his school, and yet Cody was by himself. He preferred it that way, honestly. Other children were too noisy, and if they bumped into him too much he could drop his butterfly.
At a stop sign, he glanced down at the jar, and smiled at the butterfly tapping against the glass. Distracted, he didn’t notice when someone nearby yelled at something in the sky, or when those around him began fleeing, and only looked up when a shadow fell across the ground in front of him.
Suddenly Cody felt himself being lifted in the air, and he held tighter to the jar. For a moment, he wondered if all of this was his doing, but he couldn’t recall daydreaming about aliens at all throughout the day. He screamed in fright as he rose higher and higher off the ground.
And then just as suddenly, he was inside the ship, staring at man who looked surprisingly human and not at all what Cody had expected. He stared at him, both suspicious and cautious, before blurting out in a tiny voice, “Who’re you?”
