I totally feel your anon, Em, having absolutely been there myself. I guess I just like to have my comment acknowledged (not so different from wanting feedback in the first place), and not feel like I’m just speaking into the void. We all just want to be loved!
I think a lot of it depends on where you “grew up” in fandom. Both the HP and mid-2000s ASoIaF fandoms were very deferential to creators -- from the beginning, I was in a culture where leaving comments/reviews was just what was the “done thing” and no one expected everyone to be replied to. Especially since review/comment replies weren’t a thing. Authors “replied” to reviews in their author’s notes, and only addressed a few reviewers because otherwise it would eat up the entire chapter. So you hoped something you said struck with them, but left a comment because it was the done thing. You read, you commented. So I very much still have that cultural hangover.
